I’ve long been fascinated as to why rappers/hip-hop artists always seem to crossover well into acting. Will Smith, Ice Cube, Ice T, Eminem, Mark Wahlberg, Andre 3000, LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, 50 Cent, Method Man, DMX, and the guy I think is the best of them all, Mos Def (He even does theater!), have all proven themselves to be thespians worthy of being taken seriously in the field. My theory has long been that being a rapper requires one, to some degree, to inhabit a persona, to play a character of sorts, and that to rise to success in that art form inherently prepares them to be decent actors. I’m not saying that rappers are fake, but being a successful one I think requires some mastery at being theatrical, and I can’t think of any other form of artistic expression whose masters have shown themselves to be so versatile. Feel free to tell me I’m full of sh*t in the comments.
With that said, I want to make a prediction here and now: Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator will make a really great actor one day, particularly in comedies. In fact, if I were a producer or a director I would cast him in something NOW. It really hit me watching the just-released video for he and Pusha T’s “Trouble On My Mind,” in which I LOLed multiple times at him acting a fool — tossing eggs at people, creating havoc with a scooter on a sidewalk. The dude’s just naturally funny. It was evident before, but it’s really evident here. I’ll admit it, the kid, who I once thought might be a psychopath, is starting to grow on me a little. Of course, he could still be a psychopath, just an endearing one.
And if this looks like the “Trouble On My Mind” set was a fun set to be on, well, it was…
