I haven’t been actively tracking Whitney Houston tributes, but I’m going to go out on a limb and tag Chris Cornell’s cover of “I Will Always Love You” from a San Francisco Obama 2012 fundraiser this past Thursday night as the most surprising. It may also be the most touching. For me anyway. “Superunknown” was pretty much the soundtrack to a year of my teenage life.
Not only is the performance incredibly unique, but Cornell goes into it with a simple, “I just learned this, so when I mess it up just forgive me.” No flash, no drama, no self-indulgence, just a simple and honest tribute. Bravo sir.

It’s no rustycage. But I have to admit I like it.
Of course I really love the original song as it was performed by Dolly Parton.
I also really like the cover of it by John Doe that was used in the movie The Bodyguard.
Whitney Houston’s version is probably my least favorite cover of the song.
And now all the women in the crowd are pregnant
I bought his solo live album he put out recently. I liked it but it seemed to be missing some of the songs I would have loved to hear stripped down.
Nice clip.
