Davy Jones, the British lead singer of a band called The Monkees that was formed entirely for a television show about a Beatles-type band, is dead after suffering a heart attack. He was 66. Embedded above is the video for The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer,” one of the first music videos ever made.
According to a recent interview, Jones had spent the last few years of his life working to develop a Broadway musical.
I’ve written a musical and it’s got all traditional songs in it. Hopefully we’ll have this musical launched in the next twelve months. We’ve been working on it for six years, which is probably about five years too long – you start to get cold feet, you know, once you get really deep into something. I’ve realized that I have Carousel, I have Show Boat, I have Oliver, I have Bye Bye Birdie. It’s all in this show, it’s got great music. It seems to me that there seems to be a lot of quality songs – there’s nothing that’s a throwaway.
Somewhere out there is a homecoming queen who’s crying because her daydream believer is gone. Maybe it’s your mom? You might want to call her.

This is actually a sweet thing to say. I’m pretty sad about this. I <3'd the Monkees. Davey seemed like a doll of a nice guy.
This does pretty much suck. At the risk of losing all my internet credibility (luckily, my current score is something like minus-16 anyway) I have to say I did enjoy Davy and the Monkees and believe they still get a bad rap, particularly from jackasses like Jan Wenner who essentially blackballed them from ever going into the rock n roll Hall of Fame.
Sure, the Monkees were brought together by executives, given a packaged image, and didn’t write most of their early songs. I just described half of Motown as well and I don’t see critics givng the Supremes or Jackson 5 any shit.
Excellent point.

BTW, I seem to recall the Monkees being on the old Scooby Doo cartoon once. Anyone else remember this? I couldn’t find a clip on YouTube, so I’m thinking I might be delusional or something.
Think it was just Davy Jones. He was kind of the go-to Monkee for guest appearances back in the 70s.
Ah, you’re probably right.
