There are music mashups and then there are music mashups. This is, to put it simply, one of the most gorgeous I’ve ever seen and heard.
What Vimeo mashup specialist Reborn Identity did here was sort of extraordinary: he or she took the vocals from “This Charming Man” by the The Smiths and merged them seamlessly with the instrumentals from Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games,” while splicing pieces of the videos for both songs together to create one stellar song and video — “This Charming Video Game.” How Reborn Identity managed to isolate Morrissey’s vocals and manipulate them to fit the flow of “Video Games” is incredible to me. I wish I had such skillz, but alas I do not.
In the comment thread for this particular mashup on Vimeo, Reborn Identity said that when it comes to making videos like the one below “I leave the rapid fire switching from one source to another to other producers. I much prefer to focus on just a couple of tracks and work them together into something new.”
I have to say, I’ve been listening to this song since I was a kid and “This Charming Video Game” offered me a whole new perspective on it. Very well done. I sit here in awe of your talent, anonymous person of the internet. Enjoy…
