John Mayer hasn’t toured in a while due to lingering throat issues, and it looks like it may be even longer before he does: a press release I just received from the Jazz Fest press office says that he’s having to cancel his upcoming U.S. tour due to a “granuloma in his throat.” Now, I have no idea what a granuloma is, but it certainly sounds like something no one, especially a signer, would like to have — not to mention sounding just plain disgusting.
Additionally, in a lengthy post on his Tumblr, Mayer explained that he’s suspending his music career “indefinitely” to deal with his throat issues.
I want to explain this a bit more in depth than I have in the past, because I know there’s some confusion as to what this condition is; a granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it’s in a spot where the vocal cords hit together and there’s no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment…Somewhere in all of this is another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence…The only thing that stops me from devolving into a puddle of tears is knowing that it’s a long life, and the greatest gift in the world is being able to create music no matter what the circumstances. So these are the new circumstances, and I’ll find a way to make it mean something. That’s all you can ever do.
Despite making probably a thousand John Mayer jokes on the internet over the years I was kind of looking forward to seeing him at Jazz Fest. Dude can play a guitar like few can. Get well, man.

Aw, hell. Jackass statements about his sex life aside, I like him.
I went to one of his shows when he was doing that whole John Mayer Trio thing, and he’s pretty damn great live. He should just never, ever, ever play “Your Body is a Wonderland” again.
Can this be interpreted to mean that we could possibly have the chance to hear John Mayer transition into instrumentals only? Because that would be awesome.
I kind of interpreted his words as saying that that may well be the case.
But what does this mean for his stand-up career?!?!?!?
You sure you didn’t mean to put James Franco on that title? becouse that pic…
