As we mentioned when we introduced you to the Alabama Shakes when we posted their debut video from their debut album, we’re kinda big on them right now. Their debut album, Boys and Girls, is killer — and available on Amazon for only $5 and streaming free here right now — and they’re blowing up in a way that few bands do right out the gate. They seem to be destined to be the next Black Keys or something, and I’d have no beef with that at all if such a thing came to fruition.
Anyway, they performed “Hold On” on Letterman last night and it brought back memories of the first time I saw them live — a completely mesmerizing experience — and Letterman seemed kind of blown away as well. I still can hardly believe Brittany Howard’s voice can do the things that it does. She’s a goddamn star.
Anyway, enjoy…

Letterman’s “How you doing, buddy?” to the bearded guitarist was great. That guy totally didn’t see it coming. Gotta love when Dave gets all enthusiastic when he genuinely enjoys something.
YES! That made me LOL as well.
EVERYBODY GO SEE THEM LIVE!
I was reading some snarky blogger backlash due to the hype and those comments made me hesitate to invest in listening for myself. However, when I did listen to the album, I was surprised at how good it was. Moral of the story: Either see them live as the_monsieur suggests or listen to the album. Don’t listen to know it all music bloggers.
Can’t stand when a single author uses the royal we. We are just saying…
I rarely use it but I think all of us at UPROXX are on board with this band so I felt comfortable rolling with it.
Alright, then I forgive you. I came out of my room last night when I heard them playing. They’ve got something for sure, but once I got out there and started watching them, I did feel that I wanted it to be more and to go somewhere a little more interesting. It seemed like the song was going to elevate to a next level of something, but it never did. I like whatever their sound is, though. Kind of reggae, kind of not.
This song, “Hold On,” is a good song but not the best on the album, in my opinion. You should give a listen to the whole thing — you can still stream it for free on NPR… [www.npr.org]
thanks, Cajun Boy. I’ve been hearing a lot about them on boards so when I heard them through the wall and was drawn into the next room just to hear more, I could understand the hubbub. Looking forward to hearing the rest. Btw, I can’t seem to reply to you, so that’s why I keep starting “new” comment “threads” or whatever you call this.
Hmmm….that’s weird. Try logging out and logging back in and let me know if it’s still an issue.
Long time since I’ve seen a band that doesn’t look like a magazine ad for pretty people. You know, they look like a REAL band is supposed to look, and they have an awesome sound. Faith in music bands: restored.
When’s John Fogerty getting his commission?
The track “Rise to the Sun” is one of the best songs I’ve heard all year. If it was one of their singles, people would have a better idea of what the band is about, sonically.
I’ve actually resisted listening to them because of the whole “next big thing” blogger vibe I was getting. However, I can say after watching this, they are my next infatuation. I’ve been looking for one since last spring’s Tame Impala fest.
