Nicki Minaj was set to perform at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert on Sunday when she pulled out at the last moment, at Lil Wayne’s behest (he owns the label. Young Money, she’s on), because DJ Peter Rosenberg, when referring to her hit song, “Starships,” said, “F*ck that b*llshit.”
Soon, DJ Funkmaster Flex was involved, and then he started fighting with Nicki, and Rosenberg has refused to apologize for his comments...it’s a whole lot of THAT. This isn’t the first time a rapper has voiced their opinion of the influential, New York-based radio station, whether positive or negative, either. Here are 10 songs that mention Hot 97 and what the rapper’s feelings for the station are.
“D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” by Jay-Z
This ain’t for Z100
Ye told me to kill y’all to keep it a hundred
This is for Hot 97
This sh*t for Clue, for Khaled, we the best’n
Aw n*gga, this sh*t violent
This is death of auto-tune, moment of silence
Opinion of Hot 97: positive; they play “real” hip hop, unlike rival Z100
“Positive Balance” by Immortal Technique
I wanted to spit on the radio since I was 11
But I can't afford the payola for Hot 97's
So I make paper underground, and I'm soon to blow
Moving tapes like Biggie's ghost at Bad Boy studios
Opinion of Hot 97: negative; the only way to have your song played is to cough up the $$$
“Cocaine Dreams” by G-Unit
Remember Patrice
She looked like Kelis
Met her in club
And caught her eyein' my piece
And with all the birds at the show
I had to f*ck the crazy hoe
Callin' Hot 97 'cause she knows I'm on the radio
Opinion of Hot 97: negative; crazy people listen to it?
“Hustle Hard” by Papoose w/ 50 Cent
You and your R&B boss make a good couple Fam
I'mma catch your mad lovers lane like Son of Sam
Got the revolver in my f*ckin' hand
Automatics like that Hot 97 Concert Summer Jam
Half of my work give em' samples to get em' comin' Fam
I sit with 50 like I just coughed a hundred gram
Opinion of Hot 97: negative; you might get shot if you attend Summer Jam
“Dr. Knockabout” by Nas
Yo, don't pop sh*t like you Daddy Longdick
When you come fast like Fed-Ex and bust too quick
Do hit positions she will find interest in
Don't hit the pussy if that sh*t's blistering
Hope you're listening, turn up your transistering
Hot 97, KISS-FM
Or B-L-S, with your hand up her dress
Chilling with your girl while you thinking bout ya ex
Not too easy not too complex
I break it down, how to address, the opposite sex
Opinion of Hot 97: positive; it’ll help you get laid
“Coming From” by DMX
(I don't know about the video, either, but it's the only one on YouTube)
Yonkers is where we grew
Trials we got through
On top is where we staying
Till the end, as long as we'll pray
On Hot 97 ya hear
DMX all through the year
Opinion of Hot 97: positive; you know you’ve made it when you hear your song on the station
“American Hunger (The Last Supper)” by MF Grimm
About to leave music, film is where it's at

FCC listens and wanna slay me
If you want Hot 97, don't save me
No pay, no luck, so they hate me
The DJs are scared and they motherf*ckin' shaky
The white people who own it, they act real snakey
Opinion of Hot 97: negative; white people own it, and they’re scared of anything that teen girls won't like
"Beef" by Mos Def
Beef is when crack babies can't find moms
Cause they in a pine box, or locked behind bars
Beef ain't the Summer Jam for Hot 97
Beef is the cocaine and AIDS epidemic
Opinion of Hot 97: neither; it’s important to remember that it’s JUST A RADIO STATION
“Operation Extortion” by Kool Keith
I told y’all I was gonna slap that motherf*cker
And baseball bat that motherf*cker
Your man with his bullsh*t mixtape ran out Hot 97 like a sucker

Opinion of Hot 97: I’m too scared to figure it out
“It’s All About the Benjamins” by Puff Daddy w/ Lil Kim, the LOX, and the Notorious B.I.G.
Ain't nobody's hero, but I wanna be heard
On your Hot 97 everyday, that's my word
Opinion of Hot 97: positive; but what about “It’s All About the Pentiums”?

I think Mos Def’s quote was referring to rappers starting beefs at Summer Jam more so than the station itself. i.e. Jay-Z putting an old picture of Prodigy in his ballet gear on the big screen.
Also, it’s funny that all the positive mentions of Hot 97 come from major label artists who get played and all the negatives are from underground/indie rappers that get no play. Payola, indeed.
I think he was talking about all the WWE style rap drama the station promotes. Speaking of which, we should get Rosenberg on a With Spandex podcast. The guy knows his wrestling.
Shoulda saved the Mos Def for last. He’s the most correct.
Is Nicki Manaj in a contest with Katy Perry to see how fucking stupid they can make themselves look?
LOL. nice
The banner pic reminds me of Bill Hader’s “Greg is not an alien” sketch on SNL.
i heard rosenberg this morning still yapping about this. The song belongs on Pop radio stations and not on a rap/hip-hop radio station. That is all he meant. It still gets played on all of the stations so what does she care? Google all of the violence at the Hot 97 radio station. Lots of gun shots over the years.
DJ PETER ROSENBERG IN THE MUTHA F*CKIN CHIZZOUSE!
Nikki Minaj has a big ass, or so I’m told. Unfortunately its only half as big as her mouth. Frankly if her music wasn’t popular, no one would think it was good, because its not; weak, uninspired rhymes over generic beats, she even devolves into doing a KRS-One impression on that new song. Get the fuck out of here with this talent-less man-face bitch.
