I’ve been waiting so long to use a picture of Kurt Cobain playing with cats in a post. Anyway, according to NME, Courtney Love is currently working on a documentary about her late husband with Crossfire Hurricane director Brett Morgen, one set to be released in 2014. TWIST ENDING: it was Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic who shot Kurt, not innocent ol’ Courtney. (Haha, jk, everyone knows Eddie Vedder pulled the trigger.)
Speaking earlier this week, via the NY Post, Morgen said that the pair have been in talks about a film since 2007. He said, “Courtney is the one that brought me into this. We’ve been trying to find the right time to put this film together and the time is now… Kurt was not only an amazing songwriter and musician, he was an incredible artist and filmmaker. So we are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person autobiography — [as] if Kurt was around and making a film about his life.” (Via)
In less disheartening news, Laughing Squid recently republished Kurt’s handwritten 50 favorite albums list, originally published in his pseudo-memoirs, Journals. All the bands you’d expect to be on it are represented — the Stooges, Pixies, the Breeders — but there are some surprise choices, too, like the Shaggs, Aerosmith, and the Clash’s Combat Rock. It’s further proof that Kurt Cobain could make anything cool, including lists.

Fuck Kurt Cobain and his “tortured artist”, shotgun-sucking bullshit. If he was still alive, he’d be a has-been.
Always with the negative waves, Micronaut…
but can’t say I disagree with ya
They see me trollin’. They hatin’……
Seriously, why so much Cobain coverage when there’s plenty of amazing current artists like the Biebs and Pitbull?
kurt/nirvana still makes 80% of most artists today look like frauds.
Nirvana wasn’t even the best band to come out of Seattle in the 90s. That was Soundgarden, my friends.
I’ve been mourning an Aerosmith fan for the last two decades? Son of a bitch.
To hell with Aerosmith — The Knack?
Was Kurt rocking out to “My Sharona”?
Combat Rock? Really? This list is a sham. London Calling or GTFO.
I was going to say that he’d lose points with folks for that. Obviously I was late. How about Sandinista, pal.
At least he got the right Beatles Album
I’ll give you Sandinista. Not at the level of LC but still better than Combat Rock.
I’m sure it has more to do with what he was introduced to as a kid with MTV. ROCK THE CASBAH was yooooooooge.
I love that Kurt loved Half Japanese.
That’s how I was introduced to the band. Flipper and the Wipers, too.
What? No Foo Fighters?
*chuckle
Ya know Ive never liked Nirvana (outside of their covers that is) but I gotta say I love a lot of the same artists as ol’ Kurt. Kinda stoked to see all the Butthole Surfers love on there.
seeing rites of spring on there made me smile
I’m surprised there’s nothing from after 1994 on this list. I would have thought Kurt liked Arcade Fire or Wilco.
Bravo.
The Shaggs?
really?
And he did, at least, get the right Aerosmith album, ROCKS. Whoever recorded that has been dead since PERMANENT VACATION.
pretentious hipster nonsense.
I’m sure most of those are Kurt’s, but it does say at the top “By Nirvana”. And assuming those are in order I agree with the number one choice.
Mazzy Star or gtfo
Oh God, I love that he has The Frogs on there.
I was a college bartender in the early ’90s, and that album was the one we played every night when we were closing. Nothing quite says “Get the fuck out” to a bunch of frat boys like thinly-veiled homoerotic hipster shit.
They’re right — that was a good drum break.
I assume all the fratassses (my name for frat boys, thank you) looked like Vanilla Ice?
/too young to remember anything before 1992
And Beat Happening’s “Jamboree.” Not surprising.
I may have to start calling this Calvin Johnson “Monotron.”
Mazzy Star? Good form Mr. Cobain.
