A few months ago, I was cleaning out my office when I discovered an old cassette tape that was unmarked but obviously important enough to have been stored away for God knows how long. Once I was able to track down a cassette player, I realized that it was a mix tape I had made back in the 90s, and it included some random songs I’ve long since purchased as MP3s. But it also included Pearl Jam’s performance of “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” with Neil Young at the 1993 MTV Music Video Awards, and I guess that’s why I kept it, because that was such an awesome moment.
Anyway, that’s a pretty weak anecdote as it is, but it’s even less of a “Cool story, bro” now because YouTube user “CowProd” recently remembered that he had been sitting on a 21-year old video recording of Rage Against the Machine playing an in-store show at Zed’s Records in Long Beach, California.
almost 21 years ago i shot this footage of rage playing zed records. mostly been sitting on it for this long because im that lazy.
And not only is that one hell of a find and an incredible piece of music nostalgia, but the recording was actually near-perfect. Better late than never, CowProd.

Remember when Vedder straight up took out a bottle of wine from his coat and took a big pull off it, right in the middle of a guitar solo?
13 year old me was fucking-impressed.
I thought that was the coolest. It might have been what led me to try mixing all of the booze in our liquor cabinet with coke.
[Nods approvingly]
Yep — I had that on VHS tape (can explain to you young ‘uns at another time what “VHS” is) and watched that performance until it wore out. The last cool moment the MTV Awards ever offered us….
I remember in-store performances if anybody needs an explanation.
I went to an in-store performance by MU330 and it was in a closet.
what are “stores”?
Saw Buckethead in store about 7 years ago. So they still happen, just rarely.
This is fantastic.
This is so sick. Someone better hip Paul Ryan to this shit.
Best show of my life was RATM at Irving Plaza, August of 1996.
I saw Dave Mustaine doing a show at Kroger on Woodvine some years ago. At least he called it a show. The night stock manager called it “Get your ass back to stocking that canned mean, Mustaine!”
This is cooler than anything ever. (And I saw a Liberace show in Vegas when I was a kid!)
TIL Kai was the lead singer of Rage Against the Machine.
Looks like Zach and Kai the hatchet wielding surfer were separated at birth
“The name of this band is called ‘Rage Against the Machine’ … so let’s all be careful.”
The only time I saw Rage Against the Machine live was in 1997 when the were the opener for U2 during their PopMart tour. They were fucking amazing. I still vividly remember getting there just as ‘People of the Sun’ started. Half the crowd loved them and the other half were scared.
That might be the strangest pairing this side of Hendrix opening for the Monkees
I know it looked awful and everything, but can we go back to wearing loose jeans? My balls have hurt for almost a decade now.
I know what you mean. I probably can’t have kids now…
RATM > Inside Out > Audioslave
It made my day.
Also, what is up with caps?
Not really my favourite band…
I wish I had been making music this awesome when I was….they all look like they’re 12, so I’m going to say when I was 12.
Also, no lie, the first time I saw a RATM video, I thought the lead singer was Adam Sandler. Clearly because I was a 12 year old moron
I’m only a moderate Rage fan, but this kicked @$$! Zack is just a pup!
Longest in-store I was ever at was 5 songs (25 minutes including talk between songs).
Maybe tomorrow I’ll get around to uploading these two hours of Zeppelin writing and recording their third album at Bron-Yr-Aur.
17:00 to 18:00, absolutely epic! The whole video is awesome.
Funny how he lost the mic for killing in the name of.
