With thousands of musicians playing South by Southwest in the same seven-day window, there are plenty of opportunities for attendees to see unlikely on-stage collaborations. But no one could have predicted this pairing: during the Afghan Whigs’ soul-rock set at the Fader Fort last night, they were joined by none other than Usher. Together they performed “Climax,” “OMG” (written by will.i.am), and the Whigs’ “Somethin’ Hot.”
Add this musical mash-up to the Black Eyed Peas defense list.

Was this announced in advance, or was it a surprise?
It just seems strange to me that the crowd at an afghan whigs show would go so ape shit over Usher coming out.
It’s really cool and all, but I was just surprised at how when he came out it just completely overshadowed the Afghan Whigs
I’ve always wanted to like the Afghan Whigs more than I do. Their playing is great and the songs are written really well, but I just can’t get past Greg Dulli’s singing voice. It just feels to me like the vocals need to be a lot “better” for the type of stuff he’s singing. But then again, maybe that’s part of their charm.
I haven’t heard alot of the Afghan Whigs, but one of my former roommates was a huge fan of Dulli’s other band The Twilight Singers. Saw them live a couple of times, and chain smoked half a pack with Dulli while waiting for doors to open at one of the shows. He’s a kinda smug guy, but was otherwise pretty cool.
