Writing one signature song is hard enough. Try writing two, in consecutive years. In 1973, after being inspired by/pissed off at a red-headed bank teller hitting on her husband, Dolly Parton recorded “Jolene,” effectively ensuring anyone named Jolene would have to include, “Yes, like the song” after introducing themselves. For reasons none other than “I Bet This Would Sound Cool,” YouTuber “goodlittlebuddy” slowed the song down, from 45 RPM to 33.
It’s fantastic. As for Parton’s other signature tune, “I Will Always Love You,” the definitive version already exists.
