I have a sneaking suspicion that Minnesota state Representative Steve Simon could be on the verge of becoming a viral video star in the wake of the speech gave yesterday in a hearing before a House panel on Minnesota’s ban on same-sex marriage, one in which he posed a simple, logical set of questions in a sincere, reasoned way that will surely have right-wingers butt-hurt over it.
Speaking to the body’s religious conservatives — those who believe that homosexuality is an abomination loathed by the angry, vengeful God who created the homosexuals — Simon said this…
Ask yourself, if it’s true that sex orientation is innate, is God-given, then what does it mean to the moral force of your argument? To put it in the vernacular, what I would ask is, ‘How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around? How many gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether the living of their lives the way they wish as long as they don’t harm others is Godly, holy, happy, glorious, thing?
That sound you hear is a bunch of Jesus freaks’ heads exploding. Here’s the video of Simon’s smart, reasoned speech, which drew applause from some of his colleagues:
Sadly though, Simon’s speech had little effect on the room’s regressives — the panel voted in favor of a ban on gay marriage in the state.

Logic has never influenced bigots. They take great pride in their ignorance.
Logic. Reason.. a jesus freak craves not these things
That’s not really an arugment, its more of a circular reasoning. Its like saying “Well, God created people who get off on rape so since they were made that way then we should let them rape whoever they want.” There’s no nexus to the argument.
@Jab
People are not born rapists. Idiot
The argument takes into account the belief the people are born homosexuals. This theory, though popular with many on the left is just a theory. For many it is a choice (they admit it themselves), for others it is a messed up childhood that drives them to the same sex, and some just seem to naturally feel a desire for the same sex. It does not make it right or holy in God’s sight. Though God does not hate people in “sin”. Sin itself is literally “missing God’s perfect mark or standard”. So if God hated Homosexuals, he would have to hate all who cheat, steal, commit adultry, lie etc… . For most people they just want to keep marriage a union between man and woman. It is the natural order. 99% of people really do not care what people do in the bedroom.
The real hate is usually found from those who support gay marriage. I am against gay mariage, but I do not hate them. I know gay people and they are really nice people. God tells me to love my enemies, so how can I hate those who believe differently, but aren’t my enemies. He also tells us to hold on tightly to truth (HIS truth). There has to be some standard to what truth is or what makes a child molester (i am not saying homosexauls are molesters) who believes it is ok, to be wrong. Its ok in his/her eyes.
@KenFu … that is to say that your God is everyone’s God. You are spouting what YOUR God says from YOUR religious books. That doesn’t mean it’s EVERYone’s God or religious tenets. So your argument is moot. The fact that we have the freedom to believe in (or not believe in) whatever God or religion we choose negates any “God says…” argument in my eyes. There are several other things that “God said” in the Bible that aren’t upheld by law and no one would approve of. Getting legally married requires no religious person’s approval. It’s a legal document. Your religious marriage is another matter — If your church wants to ban gay marriage, that’s a different argument. But the state and federal government should not be discriminating against anyone based on what “God” says. That isn’t what MY God says.
SS- well said, and Kenfu, when did you decide you were a hetrosexual? I often wonder why it is that some heterosexuals worry so much about what homosexuals do in their private lives. There has got to be a diagnosis to this mental disorder -and hopefully a cure.
Why does “marriage” need to be defined and recognized by the government anyway? The government shouldn’t need to concern itself in matters of the heart, mind, or bedroom. We should simply allow any human beings of legal age to enter into a legal contract with each other, regardless of gender, on their own terms.
