STAR TREK

Star Trek is a 2009 science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is the eleventh film based on the Star Trek franchise and features the main characters of the original Star Trek series, who are portrayed by a new cast. The film introduces a parallel universe/alternate timeline separate from the continuity of the original series and the previous movies.[4] It explores the previously unexplored backstories of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), before they unite aboard the USS Enterprise to combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from the future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. Released to traditional and IMAX theaters, the film debuted internationally (with some advance showings in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States) on May 7, 2009, and was widely released in North America, Brazil, Ireland and the United Kingdom on May 8, 2009.

Development of the film began in 2005 when Paramount Pictures contacted Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman for ideas to revive the franchise. The creative team contrasted Orci and Lindelof, who consider themselves "Trekkies", with casual fans like Abrams, who all aimed to create a film that would interest a general audience. They wanted to be faithful to the Star Trek canon, but they also introduced elements of their favorite novels, modified continuity with the time travel storyline, and modernized the production design of the original show. Filming took place from November 2007 to March 2008 under intense secrecy. Midway through the shoot, Paramount chose to delay the release date from December 25, 2008 to May 2009, believing the film could reach a wider audience. (via Wikipedia)

Star Trek In rebooting the franchise, J.J. Abrams faced the daunting challenge of pleasing long-time Trekkies and roping in new viewers who think 'Live long and prosper' is a slogan for an insurance company. This is not your father's Star Trek, but he'd probably like it too (begrudgingly). Buy it. Also on Blu-ray (see Todd Gilchrist's review for more on that edition.) Add to Netflix [...]

Movie Tie-ins: a Look at 'Star Trek: The Art of the Film'

via cinematical.com ( 6 Days ago )
I was obsessed with Jurassic Park when I was a kid. I can pinpoint it as the sole film that was responsible for not only my love of film, but my love of how films were made. Obviously seeing realistic dinosaurs on the big screen was the reason for the former, but the reason for the latter was a book my parents bought me called The Making of Jurassic Park, which included pages and [...]

SR Picks [Video]: X-Men Origins: Magneto Concept Trailer

via screenrant.com ( 14 Days ago )
One of the many potential X-Men movies pushed into early development after X-Men 3: The Last Stand was an origins solo film for the master of magnetism, Magneto, played of course by the talented sir Ian McKellen in the X-Men trilogy.I was always skeptical of a Magneto origins film, thinking it wouldn’t be as bankable as many projects touted, but this trailer (using X-men trilogy [...]

DOR SHO GAH, KLINGON DOMINATRIX PORN!

via uproxx.com ( 24 Days ago )
This is a just-released deleted scene from Star Trek.  I loved the movie, but this highlights the one aspect I hated — shaky-cam, quick-cut action sequences that give you no sense of the spatial awareness of a scene, just the cliff’s notes cause and effect.  Anyway, I’ll let /Film describe the context because that’s easiest for me. JJ Abrams shot a sequence [...]
