In case you were unable to join us last night for our UFC 160 Live Discussion, which Mike Tyson referred to as the most legible UFC live discussion on the Internet, you missed perhaps one of the more exciting PPV events in recent memory, and we owe it all to some fired up heavyweights. We hoped and prayed to the gods of punching and kicking that Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, hot off of his unexpected knockout of Alistair Overeem, would be better prepared for this rematch and championship title shot against Cain Velasquez than he was last time these two faced off, in a non-title match when Velasquez turned Bigfoot into a bloody mess.
Alas, we don’t always get what we want. Velasquez once again handled Silva in the first round, just without all of the gore this time. Velasquez remains the UFC Heavyweight Champion, and for the third time in his last five fights, the champ will presumably face the No. 1 contender and former champ Junior dos Santos, who was also victorious in a much more exciting fight.
Cain Velsaquez def. Antonio Silva
Junior dos Santos def. Mark Hunt
This one looked like it might go the distance, because even despite punches like this…
Mark Hunt stood his ground. That is, until dos Santos mixed it up a little bit in the third round and deliver this spinning heel kick…
… which finally sent Hunt to the ground and allowed dos Santos to score a gruesome KO punch. Hunt may have lost, but the 39-year old has nothing to be embarrassed about.
Glover Teixeira def. James Te Huna
The shining pupil of Chuck Liddell, “Danny” Glover Teixeira continued his quick rise up the UFC Light Heavyweight ladder with this impressive guillotine choke submission of James Te Huna, who was riding a four-fight win streak. Teixeira is currently the No. 4-ranked light heavyweight, and with a 19-fight winning streak, including his first four fights since joining the UFC, he has to face a fellow Top 10 fighter sometime soon, right? Right???
As for the rest of the night’s fights, including the entertaining free fights, here are the other UFC 160 results…
TJ Grant def. Gray Maynard
Donald Cerrone def. KJ Noons
As for the free fights…
Mike Pyle def. Rick Story
Dennis Bermudez def. Max Holloway
Robert Whittaker def. Colton Smith
Khabib Nurmagomedov def. Abel Trujillo
Stephen Thompson def. Nah-Shon Burrell
George Roop def. Brian Bowles
Jeremy Stephens def. Estevan Payan
We’ll see you all again for UFC on FUEL TV 10, live from Brazil, when Minotauro Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum try their hardest to live up to the standard that dos Santos and Hunt set last night.
I want more like this!
