We don’t think about Canada often since “Trailer Park Boys” wrapped up. But every now and then it does something wacky, like introduce an insane surveillance bill and insist that “if you don’t stand with us, you stand with the child pornographers.”
Yes, an elected official actually said that. Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, to be specific, and this is coming from a man who has a truly epic porn ‘stache on his upper lip. Dude, don’t complain about people standing with you when you look like you’re going to invite them to pet the puppy in your van.
So, how insane is this bill? It wants ISPs to provide email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, and the like…without a warrant. It’d also require ISPs and cell phone companies to install surveillance equipment, which law enforcement could also access without a warrant.
The good news is that the bill seems to have offended absolutely everybody in Canada. Apparently they’re all making empty threats that they’ll emigrate to the U.S. if Stephen Harper (Canada’s Dubya) doesn’t start acting like an adult.
Come on over, guys. And bring Tim Horton’s with you.

As a proud Canadian liberal (the real kind, not the Party kind), I thank you for posting this. And yes, everyone with a brain is losing their mind over this up here. Don’t expect it to be around much longer. In the meantime, I’ll start taking orders for coffee and donuts.
Good to know other Western countries have insane right wing people too.
