By now, you’ve probably seen or at least heard about Zach Galifianakis’s opening monologue for this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” (full video below). It was all the cool kids were talking about it on the Twitter on Saturday night. All the cool kids who were watching “SNL” instead of going out with friends, I mean.
But it really is a fantastic seven minutes of comedy. Every detail is pitch-perfect, from Zach slapping the bassist’s ass when enters, to alpaca message boards, to the way he added a groin-grab to “HERE COMES THE CHOO-CHOO!”, to announcing that Hoobastank was the musical guest. This is what happens when someone besides Seth Meyers is responsible for writing the monologue.
As for the rest of the episode… eh, let’s just be thankful we got the monologue, okay?

any way you can get this video available for all your foreign readers ese?
Seriously, every sketch should have been the typical awful crap with him just walking through the background. How many more times do we have to watch the kissing family?
Not to mention the fact that the cast did a much better version years ago with Julianna Margulies and the food spitting.
It’s a shame that SNL ruined the show by having SNL cast members actually try to interact with him.
The best joke I ever heard was the Hoobastank reference. Using any other band in that instance wouldnt of done it. Pure comic genius.
@ Burnsy
Are you trying to say a recurring six minute sketch based on a single, throwaway gag isn’t the pinnacle of comedy writing? You clearly have no sense of humor.
/writes another letter begging Leno to hire Jeff Dunham as permanent co-host
Remember when he had a show on VH-1? That was awesome.
SNL has this feeling like it’s being written by retarded 7th graders these days.
And Abby Elliot is so cute that I want to send her magazine clipping collages of dead animals.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t laugh at the “Zach Visits the Set” short. And “Le Room du Situation.”
But they should’ve had Zach creeping around in the background during Vampire Weekend. That would’ve been gold.
“Marijuana Santa Claus” made my day.
No one’s going to even comment about how he shaved his beard? Monologue was great, then it was pretty much downhill from there. The beauty pageant sketch was pretty funny though.
Gaylord!
The kissing family is a recurring thing? Jesus, I thought that was the worst sketch.
Agreed with Patty Boots. “Zach Drops By The Set” was funny. Also, I didn’t mind the “What Up With That?”

Hold your horses. Day ain’t over yet.
aaaaaaaand, Zach interviewing Bradley Cooper back in 2002, because I live to give!

I’m putting ‘Vice President of Ultimate Frisbee’ on my business card.
GAYLORD!
Monologue was great, though it lost points for being almost entirely from his standup canon or Between Two Ferns.
The rest of the episode lost points for being aggressively not funny. Zach’s genius was sandwiched between a tortured Obama impression and a torturous kissing family.
Didn’t foresee myself fast-forwarding through an hour’s worth of a Zach Galifianakis-hosted SNL. It was kind of like watching a snuff film: it started out interesting but the only other good part was the end.
Was I the only one who found the bidet sketch way funnier than it should have been?
Patrick Ewing was a better muse for his girlfriend than Dog
Glad I lived my best years during the SNL 70′s & 80′s.
This guy isn’t funny at all!
When you’ve had filet mignon, it’s hard to eat a hotdog and enjoy it!
Pinsey
You lived through a decade(the 70′s) in which the economy was unstable, terrorist attacks were causing havoc, there was an energy crisis and the country was in an unpopular war. You should let the present day culture cleanse you of that bad taste in your mouth.
Meh. The Charlize Theron/Dog Bounty Hunter girlfriend is recycled material. Makes me wonder what other old jokes he crowbarred in here. Amusing? Yes. Genius? No. Something tells me that “The Hangover” will be the high water mark of this guy’s career.
okay, galifianakis is HILARIOUS. i don’t care what anyone says just because this is the ‘new-ish’ era of SNL, this man is seriously funny. i knew him before the whole hangover thing–and don’t get me wrong, that movie is hilarious. watch zach’s “Live at the Purple Onion” he’s so funny! and trust me, you’ll think different of him. he’s a comic genius. i hope he gets further in his career-he deserves it!
