I meant to write this up earlier, but — in an effort to be fair to a show I judged without seeing — I actually took the time to watch “The Marriage Ref” last Thursday. And while I don’t like the show’s concept or host Tom Papa, I’ll readily admit that Larry David and Ricky Gervais make for outstanding entertainment (Madonna, meanwhile, came through with a “NOT!” punchline from Wayne’s World. Haha, good one, Madonna).
But the highlight had to have been when Ricky Gervais broke down into hysterics and showed his incredulity at being on the show, which felt to me like a tacit admission that he’d been roped in against his will.
What is going on?!? [laughs] What is going on? This is a strange programme! I feel like someone’s put crack in my drink. What is going on? This is the weirdest show I’ve ever been on. I mean, it’s already weird. It’s weird with you two [gestures at Madonna and Larry David], there’s people behind [points to audience above stage] — I don’t know what they’re doing up there.
I don’t know, watch the video below (via Inside TV). It’s funnier when he says it. You need the British accent and his high-pitched cackle to make it work. I even tried spelling “program” the English way, but the humor just doesn’t translate. Kinda like when Tom Papa tries to be funny.

I’d be cranky if I had to sit next to Madonna, too.
I gave it a shot on Hulu yesterday and made it up to Tom Papa’s introduction when he came out like a retarded 1970s game show host.
Yeah the show (and Tom Papa) is basically crap, but if the “panel” is funny (and Seinfeld should be capable of attracting good enough comedians), it’s pretty entertaining to watch. Anything with Larry David is worth my time anyway!
Ricky’s laugh could cure AIDS. NO ONE DENIES THIS!
Tom Papa’s Wikipedia boasts that he’s appeared on the Tonight Show more than 10 times. Good for him.
agreed, madonna was horrible, but give papa a chance. anyone would suck like that on a shitty show, he is actually a funny dude.
The greatest irony is Madonna never told Papa to stop preaching.
Gave it a shot as well, basically fast forwarded right to the panel segments. You could tell David and Gervais weren’t wild about the premis but the two of them were hysterical. Madonna confirmed what I’ve thought for a long time- that she is a complete dipshit.
Whats wrong with a show that just has Seinfeld and other solid comedians shooting the shit? I’d watch that.
The Marriage Ref has been flagged for Unnecessary Roughness on my gag reflex.
ZING!
I watched an episode with Seinfeld and Tina Fey which was painful to view. I swore I would never watch again but when I saw Ricky Gervais and Larry David on the same episode, I had to tune in. Gervais and David made the show. They dont even have chemistry…they’re just frickin funny. Basically, I could watch them do anything together and would laugh my ass off. Marriage Ref sucks but Gervais and David rule!
