The National’s new record won’t be released until May 11th, but they debuted the lead track, “Terrible Love” on Fallon Wednesday night. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Guitarist Aaron Dessner called the new album “darker and meaner” as well as “catchier like a pop album,” which to me sounds like the musical equivalent of a “realistic down-to-earth show that’s completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots.”
Anyway, this isn’t the sort of thing that I ordinarily write about, because I’m always six months to a year behind on what the cool kids are listening to. But dammit if I don’t love The National. You know how I bought two tickets to Conan’s live show even though I don’t have a friend to take? Well, I bought FOUR tickets to a National concert in July. I can’t even try to justify that. It’s like I assume my love of something will magically generate friends. But as my love of public indecency has shown, that’s not the case at all.
(Hulu video below in case the YouTube gets pulled)

July? Can you even wear a scarf then?
Hipsters always find a way.
I like that you like the National. P4k had two or three of their new songs earlier this week.
The National has also been featured in a couple of tv shows. They play Fake Empire at the end of the Southland pilot episode.
I thought I was listening to the National the other day, but it turns out I mistook them for the Strangers.
I’m going to guess they aren’t named after the defunct sports daily from the early 90′s.
/anyone else remember The National?
That’s a great song to drunkenly air-drum to. Which my boss has just informed me is inappropriate at 10 am in an open plan office.
Hot damn that song is good. I also love The National, but unfortunately they don’t have any tour stops scheduled in the midwest yet. Boo. AND you get to see them with Beach House. Lucky duck.
I would totally nail Rachael Harris.
That is all.
whos that hot blonde chick with glasses?
Didn’t Obama use one of their songs during his campaign?
It’s nice to see a little more activity during the performance. I’ve never seen them live, but from the youtubin’ it always looks like, should Morrissey ever flip by and see them, he’d think, “Good God, man. Butch it up a bit.”
Do not want.
They are still going to finish last in the NL East. Adam Dunn strikes out too much.
If the lyrics had been “This is a terrible song that I’m singing right now…” I would have given them a couple of points for honesty.
I heard they’ll be playing at the National Front Disco next Friday.
Zack, nice Morrissey song reference
Thanks for posting that video, the National are just amazing song writers. I just hope you’re not seeing them in DC, cause they’re playing at DAR and that place is where rock concerts go to die.
Kinda sounds like Arcade Fire was raped by Modest Mouse and their lovechild was raised by Van Morrison minus the religion. I like it.
Can I go to the show with you? If so, I totes promise to get my seeping wounds in check by July. HOPEFULLY!
Please refrain from tasting the knob.
take me
