Embedded below is the first trailer for the second season of HBO’s “Bored to Death,” the “noir comedy” that I don’t quite like but can’t stop watching. Jason Schwartzman stars as the young novelist-turned-amateur detective, while Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis play his magazine editor and best friend, respectively. In case you’re new to Warming Glow, here’s a quick recap of what I like about the show:
- Ted Danson.
- Zach Galifianakis.
- Excellent guest stars.
- Filmed in Brooklyn.
- Frequent nods to the brilliance of Raymond Chandler.
And a list of what sucks:
- Jason Schwartzman’s midget stature and stupid flat-ironed hair.
In its attempt to succeed in the realm between Chandler’s hardbitten noir and The Pink Panther‘s humor, the show ultimately fails at both. And it’s all because I can’t believe that Schwartzman, playing a Woody Allen nebbish in a trench coat, is a character who would ever have the balls to seek out anything resembling danger. This show could be awesome if it killed off Schwartzman’s character and replaced him with someone like Nathan Fillion’s Castle. Maybe if we can get rid of TV and film characters who are writers and total pussies, we can get rid of actual writers who are total pussies. And then Slate will go out of business. Everyone wins.

Here’s another abortion that is still around while Veridian Industries has been foreclosed upon…
Enough about these Jew York assholes, talk about my show.
Its Monday, so how many times can you find the word ‘zeitgeist’ in new Slate articles?
“Maybe if we can get rid of TV and film characters who are writers and total pussies”
John Goodman took an important step in that direction last night…
For an example of how to properly use Jason Schwartzman in this day and age, see: Funny People.
/just as surprised as you are
This title is apt. I couldn’t get through two episodes.
It definitely is Schwartzman that’s holding it back.
I was about to disagree with you but then I thought of Nathan Filion, or really anyone else playing Schwartzman’s character and now I’m just dissappointed.
@Dagotron I disagree. No one should ever, under any circumstances, see Funny People.
How can a show suck this bad when it stars Galifianakis? Schwartzman is wearing out his welcome with me. Loved him in Rushmore, but he has been steadily gone the way of Woody Allen and transmogrified into “SuperHeeb” ever since. You’re Jewish, I get it. Who gives a rat’s?
In all fairness, I enjoyed Schwartzman as a voice in Fantastic Mr. Fox. But I’m gonna keep on hating him until he gets a big-boy haircut and gets relegated to supporting roles.
@Aerothermal Heat: No, I said “see: Funny People,” not “see Funny People” — as in refer to Funny People. The only way anyone should watch that movie again is if they cut out the entire hour where Adam Sandler goes to his ex-girlfriend’s house.
Also, put me in the camp that thinks Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson more than make up for the shortcomings of Schwartzman. Especially Danson.
Now if they continue to use Jenny Slate in a supporting role? All bets are off.
I love this show, but don’t know why, probably Danson and it’s overall quirky vibe, it’s like a toned down Wes Anderson movie and I love the cast through and through
This show doesn’t suck Mudhen. It’s no Breaking Bad or Mad Men, but it’s watchable. Ted Danson is pretty solid and Zach Galifinakis plays a pretty good toned-down version of most of his other characters. If anyone, Schwartzman is the weak link. He’s OK, but he’s just so damn unlikeable. If someone told me I had to hang out with him for a day, I’m not so sure I wouldn’t try to run away. He’s just a depressing person. I might even go as far as to say he’s a better singer than an actor. And what do you think that says about his acting skills?
I like Jason, I guess Rushmore gives him a lifetime pass for me
Qualification: the show is watchable if you like neurotic leading men. I expect more from Schwartzman because I have always liked him so much (even in that Huckabee movie that everyone hated), but he’s really become a one-trick pony. Good actors and good shows show evolution of character (in other words 180 degrees from the flaming bag of dog shit known as Entourage).
I love this show. I’d rather it were Fillion in the lead role but durrrr, that goes for most shows. Danson and Galifinakis are awesome. Max Fischer is alright with me.
Danson is unreal good in this show and yes, that whiny little bitch from Rushmore is destroying what otherwise be a pretty decent show.
This show was just “okay” until the last three episodes, which were hysterically funny overall. It’s just too bad that the show finally found its voice on episode six, and then ended after episode 8. Hopefully season 2 is the usual 12 episodes long, and they continue the run that they finished season 1 with.
