This commercial aired during the Fox affiliate’s coverage of the Puero Rican Day Parade this past Sunday in New York. It’s for Cibao Meats, and while I’m not as hung up on all the meat dancing as Rich from fourfour is, this does give me an excellent excuse to talk about the Puerto Rican Day Parade. It really is a strange and inexplicable phenomenon for a gringo like myself.
If you’ve never witnessed the Puerto Rican Day Parade, picture the 4th of July in the most patriotic town in America. Then change all the flags to Puerto Rican flags. Then multiply the number of flags you see by twenty. Then imagine that the only clothing people are wearing is either tight stone-washed denim or some variant of the flag (even for the fat ones). Then take into account that there’s no historical significance to the day, and that the celebration isn’t even for a sovereign nation. It’s like the whole point of the parade is to show how many flags they have. “Look at us! Our commonwealth has the world’s only flag-based economy!” Yeah, way to go, Puerto Rico. Great to have you on the team.
This part of the commercial was cool, though:
