William H. Macy, ‘Shameless’ Drunk

This is the trailer for Showtime’s “Shameless,” starring William H. Macy as the alcoholic father of a blue-collar Chicago family. Emmy Rossum plays Fiona, his oldest daughter and the de facto adult in the family, and Joan Cusack will play an agoraphobic neighbor in the series, which debuts in January.

A lot of people will compare this trailer to the credits of the original British version, but I just don’t see it. Or rather, I don’t hear it. I can understand Macy when he narrates the trailer above. Here’s the opening line:

Nobody’s saying our neighborhood is the Garden of Eden, but it’s been a good home to my kids, who I’m proud of.

And here’s the British version:

Naow nubbuddy say tha Chazwuthistate is thaa Gaa’en uh Ee-en, boh izzbeen a ohbzwoll to me, Frank GAAHligger, and mitchizz, oooo I’m proud uv.

Completely unintelligible. I really wish English people spoke proper English. U-S-A! U-S-A!
