Obviously, today’s water cooler conversation is about last night’s Golden Globes, not this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow. But I have my habits, so I thought I’d post the relevant sketches from Saturday night. Besides, it’s a holiday. I owe it to the memory of Dr. King to not work very hard today. Wait, that came out wrong.
Anyway, even though Paltrow is a an annoying child of privilege, I still think she’s a talented actress who’s been in some films that I’ve enjoyed. That said, she ain’t funny. Her talent is best used by putting on a lot of eye makeup and making sad faces. The only time she makes me laugh is when her severed head ends up in a box. Watch the way she ruins this sketch:
That’s a potentially funny sketch — not to mention a novel way to introduce a musical act on “SNL” — but it falls flat because Paltrow can’t play a brassy music executive. Boo.
Thankfully, Andy Samberg and Pee-Wee Herman saved the show with one of my favorite digital shorts in a long time:
UPDATE:

Has anyone seen Pee Wee’s Broadway show?
And I love how they found a Pee Wee winter coat.
I’m highly critical of SNL, especially this season, but to be honest I mostly enjoyed this episode. Being half in the bag didn’t hurt- try watching it again but drink a quarter bottle of Redemption Rye.
I gotta say, the Fresh Prince scene made my chuckle quite a bit too.
If that SNL episode was a poker hand it would be a pair of sevens.
The only good thing I can say about this cunt is that she has not killed 600+ children.
I still think she’s a talented actress who’s been in some films that I’ve enjoyed.
Ummm, I’m going to need examples (SHOW YOUR WORK!) without using Seven.
@Enrico: Royal Tenenbaums. You shouldn’t have to ask.
Anyone else realize this episode was essentially a cavalcade of impressions (opening political thing, Bar Mitzfah), not relevant to anything?
It was like Family Guy and the Seltzer/Freidberg guys had an unfunny gayby together.
Head in a box; now there’s a episode saving Digital Short!
agree with Howdy on that point. Lots of impressions and lots of singing. I guess Gwyneth fancies herself a songstress now (wtf). I did really enjoy the 1st sketch with the PASSWORD game and I liked the Shakespear previews but other than that fucking weak. Also i’d like to see more of J Pharoh not doing impressions.
F this episode. The most obvious thing was how much better Ceelo Green would have been as a host. He killed. Paltrow sucks.
Oh, and that arab chick continues to have a killer body. When she was dressed as Aguilera, I wanted to see more.
@Enrico Talented Mr. Ripley as well. Only because I never tire of watching Jude Law get hit in the head with an oar (which gives the movie an A+ in my book)
This needs to be said: Cee-Lo looks like one of the Newcomers from Alien Nation.
Sitting on Chairry is the closest Anderson Cooper’s come to going down on a woman since Jr. prom.
WELCOME TA EARF!
That cracked me up.
That sketch with Pee Wee was a classic. I say it was overall an enjoyable saturday night live. No sketches with two dudes making out for shock value. Way to go writers.
Hey there, five days late: It doesn’t matter who the other person in the PASSWORD sketch is, Wiig kills me on that one every time.
By far the worst episode of this season so far. Paltrow is almost unbearable to watch.
The F You song sucks in general. It’s okay if unedited and first time listening but sucks thereafter. Only thing worse is Gwyneth trying to sing anything!! Can’t the hillbillies listen to real country and shoot this chick while they’re at it?
