Since Comcast took over NBC and ousted Jeff Zucker, the network has started taking small steps toward respectability — renewing their critically acclaimed comedies, greenlighting promising scripted series, and generally avoiding colossal missteps like putting Jay Leno on at 10 p.m. But the Peacock isn’t all the way out of the idiot hole yet, as evidenced by two recent programming decisions.
First, the Season 5 DVD of “Friday Night Lights” is available today. Granted, “FNL’s” final season already aired on Channel 101 as part of DirecTV’s deal with NBC to keep the show running, but it seems odd that people without DirecTV can simply purchase the DVD and watch the show at their leisure, rather than on NBC with commercials. As Alan Sepinwall noted on Twitter, NBC considers what may be the best show on television “an afterthought.”
In addition to that, NBC cut its last ties to Zucker by buying a “Project Runway” knock-off from Ben Silverman called “Fashion Star.” In case you don’t follow office politics, Silverman was NBC’s former top executive whose hiring Zucker called the biggest mistake he ever made (I assume this was before Zucker created the Leno-Conan debacle). And although Silverman is responsible for “The Office” and “The Biggest Loser,” he also gave the thumbs-up to remakes of “Knight Rider” and “Bionic Woman.” Soooo… maybe not the best guy to do business with. “Hey, we fired the guy who fired this guy! That means we should work with him, right?”

This article made my head hurt. Can the next one have boobs?
and I’m not talking about Jeff Zucker.

Whoa whoa whoa, lets not go around calling Friday Night Lights the best show on TV…
@ The Hammer – with all due respect, fuck you. FNL WAS the best show on tv.
also, I’m buying the dvd and I’ll watch it again on NBC. First, to hopefully make it look like ppl watched the show and they and I quote “made a huge mistake”. Second, HD, better than the regular dvd and third, I go home on friday nights to watch it with my parents.
You think Zucker and Silverman have a good laugh over all of this when they’re at temple together?

Maybe the best show on DirecTV.
If I wanted to I could list at least a dozen shows better than Friday Night Lights. Its not a bad show but just cause it doesn’t suck doesn’t make it great.
Impossible. It didn’t suck and it was great.
@The Hammer – You disliked the show, fair enough. In my opinion, it was consistently brilliant. There were parts that didn’t sit well with me, but overall, I’ve never seen a show so strong every episode.
On some shows, nothing changes. On FNL, everything changes and so quickly, which makes it all the better as we never knew when our favorite characters were leaving Dillon.
The Wire had a few clunkers, especially later on.
The Shield was brilliant but also suffered at times when they were unsure of where to take Vic.
Mad Men had a dodgy season three.
The Sopranos had some sucky seasons.
The only show that remains on the level of FNL in terms of consistency is Breaking Bad, and that is only three seasons old.
That’s enough for me to rank FNL as one of the best series of all time.

The things Friday Night Lights did so well was dump 90% of the original cast when they graduated and introduced new compelling characters (except JD McCoy- total asshole).
McCoy was a total ass. But I really wished they had brought him back for his Senior year to get his ass curb stomped by Luke and Vince.
The Hammer’s taste in television sucks.
