Savvy sitcom fans know that there’s been no shortage of love between NBC’s “Community” and ABC’s “Cougar Town” this year, from Abed’s (Danny Pudi) extended soliloquy about being an extra on “Cougar Town” to the background appearance of Busy Phillips and Dan Byrd in the “Community” finale.
On last night’s “Cougar Town” finale, the crossover love came full circle, with Pudi appearing as an extra in a scene with Laurie (Phillips) and Travis (Byrd). At least the scene starts with Pudi as an extra — by the end of the clip, it’s clear that he’s in character as Abed, and his autistic fixation on studying people gets the better of him. Watch the video below.
With the exception of the heavy-handed product placement, it’s a pretty cool little scene.

Did he run off to shit his pants?
This show looks awful, except for Abed.
Wait, Subway serves coffee?!!!
I hope more shows do this kind of cross-promotion and it leads to Guy Fieri being thrown overboard on “Deadliest Catch.”
Well now I have to go back and watch the My Dinner With Andre episode of Community and watch Abed’s explanation of Pudi’s appearance on Cougartown, referenced heavily in Community even with cameos from Cougartown actors–or were they in Character? This brings up an important debate I’ve been having with myself for several weeks. Busy Phillips: attractive, or borderline tranny?
Cougar Town is good, get over the name. Subway started doing coffee when they started doing breakfast, and the coffee is awful. Busy Philips is both attractive and a borderline tranny.
Why would Subway lend its good name to a crappy show like Cougar Town? They must maintain the ingrity of their spokespersons Michael – Phelps and Strahan.
Oooh, he should’ve played it like Han Solo or Don Draper.
That’s not Abed it’s Chad. Chad from Cougar Town. Former soccer star at Cougar Town junior high.
Busy Phillips does look especially tranny-like in that still above.
I’d like to think that when Abed abruptly leaves the scene that that’s the moment Abed pooped his pants on the set of Cougartown.
She’s an attractive upside down mouth lady. I’m more than a little concerned about all her moles.
Abed/Chad is not drinking Subway coffee because that’s not how Community rolls.
I loved this. Two of my favorite current shows – Community being my absolute favorite; Cougar Town being somewhere in the ‘Solid B’ range.
And how great was it to have Scrubs’ Ted show up in Hawaii? Just a cross-over-ganza going on last night.
I read an interview with Bill Lawrence where he said they wanted to have Abed’s cameo as faithful to his description as possible from My Dinner With Abed, but there was a scheduling conflict with Courtney Cox.
Also I thought Chuck had the exclusive rights to Subway shilling.
I like Cougar Town. It started off terribly as Cox playing a sex starved woman, but they quickly realised it wasn’t going to last long. So they changed it to more of a group dynamic within the street, and it works.
Busy Phillips is gorgeous, but when they have her wear too much jewellery and makeup, like in the scene showed here, it doesn’t help. The last half of last night’s episode, with her not wearing much makeup and a bikini showed how pretty she can be.
The name still sucks, but they know it sucks. The show is still better than Modern Family which took a huge drop in quality this season.
Was the blonde chick being played by one of the Wayans botherers?
i love busy philipps! note, however: philipps has one l and three p’s.
Could the product placement get any worse?
A.) I would absolutely love to live in your world if you think Busy Philipps is even slightly unattractive. I’ll take the tranny of society, and you can go off and take the better girls.
B.) I thought it was really funny product placement. Product placement is terrible, but I like the way they handled it. I usually make the joke in a negative way, but whenever you order a sub, they ask you what you want on it, and you never have any idea, so you end up piling a ton of shredded lettuce on it and ruining the already terrible sandwich. They took it more positively, but there has damn sure been worse. The breakfast shout-out was crappy, but it’s a part of modern life, and I would say they did it very well.
wasn’t the season finale of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe had to clean the shitter in Guy Fieri’s trailer?
this just proves how good Community is, a throw away line has the continuity followed through. GO COMMUNITY. http://www.dailystooge.com
