A new study reveals that DVR units in the United States waste a butt-ton of energy every year. DVR boxes that are turned off and not recording a show still sap power from the grid, using the “same amount of energy annually as is produced by nine coal-burning power plants.”
About 160 million digital video recorders and cable and other pay-TV boxes in the U.S. eat up 27 terawatt-hours of electricity a year and cost consumers about $3 billion, according to researchers from the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Inactive boxes that aren’t recording or playing back shows account for about $2 billion of that cost, the study found. Hitting the off button only dims the box’s clock or display, leaving it to continue consuming nearly the same amount of power.
With some form of pay-TV box in 80% of U.S. homes, the technology eats up as much electricity each year as all the homes in Maryland, researchers said. Newer HD-DVR boxes use 275 kilowatt-hours annually, compared with the 17 kilowatt-hours required by a compact fluorescent light bulb. [LA Times]
Well yeah. I would expect the DVR to use a lot more energy than a light bulb. The light bulb isn’t recording “Justified” for me. The light bulb doesn’t allow me to fast-forward through commercials and watch Adult Swim shows at my convenience. So just go ahead and take all the energy you need, DVR. I’ll sit in a dark room without air conditioning before I unplug you.

One word, two-layered counterargument: “Justified.”
I don’t see the big deal. I leave my hair dryer running all day too just in case, but you don’t see anyone freaking out over that.
I have two TiVo boxes sitting in the basement in a box. Maybe I’ll plug them in. Can’t really use them with DirecTV, but I want to be part of the club.
Come again? I shouldn’t burn them for firewood? I
refuse todon’t understand.I’m all for turning off lights when I leave the room and unplugging the coffee pot when I’m not using it, but the DVR is sacred.
The DVR has truly improved my life on the daily basis. Next to computers (and associated computer shit like the web), it’s the one thing that I use daily that totally improves my life that wasn’t invented ages ago (and no I’m not including cell phones…somehow those have been a win/lose deal for me. Yes I can avoid disgusting pay phones and don’t have to remember phone numbers anymore but now…I can’t escape the phone)
Also, kitty!
Yeah, but without DVR’s we would be bored, get in our cars, drive around looking for a convenience store to rob and probably shoot the cashier when we found one. That would waste a lot more than $2 Billion dollars in gas alone, not to mention police costs, flowers for the deceased, insurance losses and junk food. In conclusion, $2Billion is cheap.
LaFavre is right, without my TiVo, I would rob, murder and burn a lot more than 2 Billion dollars A WEEK.
2 Bs a year is getting off easy.
Oh and hi kitty.
I think it’s absolute horseshit to claim that the electricity is “wasted.” Did anyone ever claim that we were “wasting” billions of dollars keeping all those B-52′s on ready-alert during the Cold War? Well, sure, a bunch of hippies did, but did anyone who mattered ever claim that?
Well then, build 9 more power plants.
Well, in addition to my two DVRs, I also shave in the shower. Suck it, conservationists.
Well, that’s America for you. If we can’t eat it, kill it, burn it or put it in coffee, we’ll just leave it on all weekend. May the wings of Liberty never lose a feather. USA!USA!
