HBO has placed a pilot order for “Da Brick,” loosely based on Mike Tyson’s early life. It will be produced by “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin, and Spike Lee will direct the pilot. More from Deadline:
Set in current-day Newark, NJ, nicknamed “brick city,” Da Brick is described as a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in supposedly post-racial America and is loosely inspired by aspects of Tyson’s youth. Search is under way for an young black actor to play the lead.
*picks up telephone* “Hello, Michael K. Williams? Learn how to box IMMEDIATELY.”
While I can’t stand Ellin’s smug douchiness regarding “Entourage’ (Exhibit A, Exhibit B), I am intrigued by HBO — the last real home for boxing on television — making a dramatic series about a young black boxer (I couldn’t get into “Lights Out” because I’m tired of stories about white boxing champions), and Tyson’s life is certainly rich with good stories. “Da Brick” just needs to keep its focus on Tyson’s early life. Nothing after 1990 is really believable.
(UPDATE: A couple people have pointed out that Michael K. Williams is 45. Whatever, a boy can dream.)

I like where your head’s at, but a quick trip to imbd confirmed my suspicion: Iron Mike is only 6 months older than Omar. Williams doesn’t look anywhere near 45 but I don’t think he can play an up and coming boxer.
“loosely inspired by aspects of Tyson’s youth.”
In the same way that “Titanic” was loosely inspired by aspects of The Titanic?
@awesomeX — I thought that might be the case, but I thought “HBO” and instantly got my hopes up.
Cutty Wise or GTFO
“Mr. Lee… Will Smith is on the phone”
What about former East Dillon QB1 Michael B Jordan?
He meant the young Michael K Williams. WTF is wrong with you guys?
na’chu, na’chu, ‘n na’chu
The nice part about the Doug Ellin version of Mike Tyson’s life is that it will actually all work out in the end.
Actually, Michael from “The Wire” threw a pretty decent punch. I vote for him.
*crosses fingers*
Not a Smith, not a Smith, not a Smith…
Omar is 45 friggin’ years old!?!? Damn, I didn’t know he’d been playin’ the game that long….
Could this be the career resurrection the Wayans Brothers needed?
Damon showed he can box in Great White Hype, right?
I swear HBO did a movie based on Tyson’s life back in the 90′s or some crap. Will the show be loosely based on that?
Two things: I like the Super 6 on Showtime, and Michael beating up Kenard was riveting TV.
