There was some excellent TV journalism on “60 Minutes” last night, none of which had anything to do with
Andy Rooney. If you want to learn or see something worthwhile, I recommend watching the piece about the relationship between Fort Bragg and the tsunami-ravaged city of Otsuchi, or the jaw-dropping life of Alex Honnold, the best solo free climber in the world.
But of course the big news is that Andy Rooney closed the show for what we hope will be a final time (above), which was preceded by a 13-minute interview/retrospective puff piece about the curmudgeonly 92-year-old (video of that below). And here’s the short version: Andy Rooney is a real dick. He’s not just a grump on TV, he also resents being recognized by fans, refuses to sign autographs, and doesn’t respond to any fan mail. So if you see Andy Rooney on the street or in a restaurant, don’t say hello. Tell him “f*ck you.”

He was also a racialist.
Jiminy Jillikers!
/doesn’t recognize the distinction between Andy and Mickey Rooney.
“So if you see Andy Rooney on the street or in a restaurant, don’t say hello. Tell him “f*ck you.””
I didn’t need to watch 60 Minutes to know that.
Fuck him for still going by “Andy” at age 92.
Grumpy disposition, nonsensical ramblings about present-day society, unkempt appearance… Andy Rooney doesn’t bring anything to the table that I can’t get for free by stopping by a nursing home for half an hour.
The fact that they wasted half of a show paying homage to an old dickhead who’s STILL ALIVE and has contributed nothing to the world made me unreasonably angry.
That free-climbing dude was out of control. There’s a good behind-the-scenes video on CBS.com showing how they filmed it.
It reminds me of Tom Hanks at the end of the Simpsons movie. “This is Tom Hanks, telling you that if you see me in real life, please leave me alone.”
I liked when he tied an onion to his belt…which was the style at the time.
Andy Rooney was an alumnus of my college fraternity chapter. All of the alumni mailings sent his way invariably came back stamped “addressee deceased”.
@CN, he was born and raised in Albany, NY. Funny how no one up here seems to brag about that fact.
He even starts that 60 minutes piece saying he luckier than everyone else. fuck you old man.
“Writers never retire.” The good ones kill themself.
Andy Rooney aside, that surprisingly hot female reporter totally banged the climber dude.
First time I’d watched 60 minutes in 20 years was last night and it just happened by accident. The tsunami piece was awesome. The climbing guy is insane. Rooney… well, let’s just say that if it wasn’t his last episode, it would definitely be mine.
As much as people dislike the guy I’d always been indifferent. A guy who nitpicks through observation? That’s Seinfeld’s entire career, and it’s what 9/10 of internet posters do.
Then I watched that episode. He’s a live human Troll. A hateful, spiteful, self-righteous mean-spirited old f***.
And you know what? He strikes me as one of those guys for whom the job has been keeping him alive. Now that he’s retired we can wait the two-to-three months before he kicks the bucket.
To all of the previous posters. None of you with your vicious and smug remarks have realized you are Andy Rooney clones…..so f you all.
Hopefully his death will be more painful than listening to him. He won’t see 93
And good to see Lara Logan.
I watched the video on Alex Honnold and almost puked on my keyboard. He may die climbing, but at least he gets to tap all those hot groupies at the climbing gym.
For all of you Andy Rooney haters, keep in mind that he is a WWII vet, served in Europe. That gives him some latitude in my book.
“Grumpy disposition, nonsensical ramblings about present-day society, unkempt appearance… ” and “has contributed nothing to the world”
That pretty much describes internet commenting.
