When Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake teamed up with the Roots to perform “The History of Rap” last September, it was a blast — a fun and funny walk through some of rap’s most influential songs. Then they did a second volume this summer, and it was noticeably watered down. Four months have gone by since then, and now we’ve got a third edition (video below).
The performance is fine — it’s good, really — but it feels predictable. “Oh, here’s the part where they finish the medley in the audience.” And while I enjoyed Timberlake razzing Fallon about not having to use his AK, I was equally embarrassed to see them include a slice of “Jump Around,” the whitest rap hit of all time. C’mon guys, leave that one to the DJs working high school dances and boring people’s weddings.

…but not exactly Hip-Hop Harry…..
So Kriss Kross will be spun at Wedding de Caveman? Or is it just cheaper at this point to pay Kriss Kross a sandwich to perform it live?
Parker Lewis would argue that Jump Around is just as relevant today as Richard Speck.
Nobody will get that.
UNC still plays “Jump Around” before every tip off. I have seen way too many overly enthusiastic old white people dance to that damn song.
Damn, Patty. You just named my Alma Mater.
Before our football games in high school, we’d listen to “In the Air Tonight” in the locker room to focus and think about the job we had to do, then we’d turn on “Jump Around” to get hyped and ready to hit someone.
My team’s record was a combined record as 11-29 the four years I played.
God damn it. A combined record of 11-29. I’m as good at typing as I am at football.
The whole sentence is screwed up. Whatever. Don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee or whatever.
Justin and Jimmy, learn to quit while you’re ahead.
I can’t believe how many songs the audience didn’t know.
Jesus, Fallon tries way too hard to be likable.
