Childish Gambino performed on “Conan” last night, and I’m getting really tired of calling Donald Glover Childish Gambino. I understand perfectly well that that’s his stage name for his musical career, but it’s not like he’s Batman. He’s right there on stage, not wearing a mask. I can see that he’s successful actor Donald Glover rapping about sex. “No! When he’s wearing a hoodie, he’s Childish Gambino!” All right, whatever.
Anyway, video of his performance of “Heartbeat” is below. It’s got a dirty-ass beat that sounds like The Gap Band’s “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” and it contains the notable diss “He just a fake dude who blog in all caps.” HOW DARE YOU, SIR. THIS IS HOW I EXPRESS MYSELF.

I can’t figure out if I like this or not. I’ll read the next few comments and decide.
You like this, because Donald Glover is great. And the rest of his album is excellent, as well.
Fun fact: Donald Glover got his stage name “Childish Gambino” from the Wu-Tang name generator.
You like it.
Saw him live and dude is so super talented without being all “HURRRRR I’m talented and handsome!” like that freaking Maroon 5 singer. STOP STARING AT MY GIRLFRIEND LEVINE!
So, I really want to like him as a rapper, but it just grosses me out to hear him talking about sexytimes. His face is just too innocent looking. I feel like pedobear. And it doesn’t help that “Childish” is in his name.
I’ll say this for DG/CG. Dude puts on an awesome show.
I love this.
His shows are off the charts good. His latest show in LA, he played 10 new songs off Camp and some dude filmed it all with great sound and video quality:

Some men want their boys to grow up to be astronauts or senators. I want mine to grow up to be Donald Glover. Dude is cool, funny, smart, and he works his ass off.
My Wu Tang name was The Ever So Weary Assistant
Not a fan. Of his stage name or of his lyrics. Sounds like he’s pandering to ironic twenty-somethings. And what’s the deal with kids today? Why won’t they get off my lawn?
“You give really adequate handjobs and it’s awesome.”
I like the beat and the chorus, but I just don’t like his rapping. I really want to like it.
It’s upsetting, everyone whose comedic opinions I share and respect love Childish Gambino, and yet… no matter how many times I try, I just can’t enjoy it at all. It doesn’t help that I’m not at all into rap, but still…
I’m in my 30′s now, am I officially out of touch? NOOOOO!
@John Doe. How can you not like his lyrics? Do you just not like hip hop or do you get your hard on when Pit Bull is onstage spewing bullshit.
I can’t pinpoint it, but yeah, something about the raps I can’t totally get into. Maybe the overuse of punchlines or the blatant Wayne/Kanye/Drake hybrid in his style. Weird, cause I enjoy the other aspects of dude’s work.
Having said that, I still thought the live show was awesome. Go to there if you get a chance.

@WiltStilts Sounds like he’s pandering to ironic twenty-somethings. This was my reason for not liking it. Although I confess that I’m not what you’d consider a fan of hip hop in general, to the extent that I barely understand your remark.
I also don’t really like his rapping voice, and I agree with Chet that he sounds like he’s trying to sound like Lil’ Wayne and it just comes off as extremely derivative. I like his beats and I think he can sing, I just wish he would stop trying so hard to sound like Wayne.
Plus, it seems wierd to hear “Troy” drop the n-word so many times. I’m not particularly offended by that word, he uses it waaaay too much. It’s like he can’t come up with enough syllables to fit each bar without saying it every other line.
Umm, Jared forgot to mention perhaps the best part of the concert videos he linked to: Alison Brie is one of his backup singers.
Got two very different types of boners right now…
Donald Glover is a much better rapper than Nick on “Gigolos.”
I’m deaf so my opinion counts for nowt.
What I will say is that Don Glover makes me laugh to myself whenever I see his name.
I want to get a hoodie so I can be a rapper too
If you want to like Childish Gambino, but Bonfire didn’t do anything for you, I’d humbly recommend All That Shine or That Power.
He’s a lot more vulnerable and relatable on those tracks, and knocks them both out of the park.
If it was 5 years ago, All That Shine totally would have been autoplaying on my livejournal page.
Totally.
In matters of taste there is no dispute. With that said put me down in the “too ironic” camp.
@Chet Manly: OMG that was really, really uncomfortably funny.
I do agree that he’s awesome live. He opened for Joel McHale Dec 31, 2009 (yeah, I know I talk about Joel too much, but he’s the perfect* man, so deal with it.) He was hilarious with his stand up and did a bit of rapping if I recall. I listened to a few tracks from his CD on NPR, but the only thing I really liked was a spoken word part at the end of one of the songs. It was beautifully written and performed. Dude’s got talent in spades. Wait, can I say that? Was I accidentally old-timey racist?
*unless he turns into a Hollywood jerk and leaves his wife and two kids for some bimbo, then he’s dead to me.
