The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced yesterday that Ricky Gervais would return to host the Golden Globe Awards for a third consecutive year. The decision comes after a 2011 show in which Gervais made sharper, funnier jokes about the actors in attendance than the po’ widdle A-wist stars were used to hearing (more on that here and here). Recently, after months of speculation about his possible return, Gervais threatened to air a competing live podcast with comedian friends like Louis C.K. and Chris Rock if he wasn’t asked to host. I don’t know whether it was all a big publicity stunt, but Gervais will return for more withering one-liners.
The group, composed of 83 entertainment journalists from around the world, voted Wednesday to bring back the performer for a third consecutive year, though a small but vocal minority dissented. Sixteen out of the 62 members who voted were opposed to Gervais’ return, according to a person who was present at the meeting but asked not to be identified because of the confidential nature of the proceedings…
According to the person at the vote, the majority of the dissenters were older members who found Gervais’ material in January insulting and were concerned that some of the A-list stars on the receiving end of the jokes wouldn’t return for more abuse. “My worry was that he was insulting, and when I invite someone to my house, they don’t insult me,” said longtime HFPA member Judy Solomon, who writes for an Israeli publication. “But this is show business. I guess I’m old-fashioned.” [LA Times]
Yeah! Go suck an egg, Judy! I guess the Jews don’t run Hollywood after all.

*monocle pops out of socket* “I say, is that British gentleman making our award show watchable?! We must do something quickly to stop this!”
Well is it a roast or ain’t it?
HUMP THAT PODIUM! HUMP THAT PODIUM! HUMP THAT PODIUM!!
To me, Ricky Gervais is overrated. He said a lot of mean and terrible things at an uptight awards show (as uptight as the Golden GLobes can get), pissed off a lot of old people and made headlines, got a lot of laughs out of it, then realized, “Holy shit! I can ride this fucker into the ground!” and that’s exactly what he did. Any time he pops up anywhere, it’s to make some comment about how “THEY don’t want me to say swear words and mean things, but I’m so cheeky that I just don’t care!”
We get it, Ricky, you’re British and controversial. Nobody gives a fuck.
I honestly don’t think he went far enough.
But does this remind anyone else of an abusive relationship? Apparenlty the Golden Globes need counseling.
For me, it’s not whether he went far enough or not, it’s the fact that he just took the ball and unashamedly ran with it. I dunno, maybe it’s just the smug smile that annoys the shit out of me.
The puzzling thing is that he’s actually keen to do it.
I’m a pretty big fan of Gervais, I think his shows are brilliant (Extras is one of my all time faves)
Was all set to get into a shouting match, but I could never be mad at Sir Digby Chicken Cesar. I miss your amazing adventures.
I will abstain from watching awards shows until Karl Pilkington gets to host one.
I’m not knocking Gervais’s shows at all (though I’ll admit I haven’t really watched any of them). I just think his time could be better spent outside the award show circuit.
And thank you Dusty, my adventures are surprisingly amazing.
I LIKE gervays
“I guess the Jews don’t run Hollywood after all.”
That’s just what we WANT you to think.
This event is a huge circle jerk, at which, the Hollywood elite take turns jizzing on one another and then gushing about how good it tastes. The fact of the matter is that Hollywood, as a whole, is going downhill. Blame it on the audience or studio execs or aliens or whatever, but this event needs a roaster. Gervais has done a fine job in the past and I’m glad he’s back instead of some schmuck who just wants to join in on the cum parade.

You are kidding right? I’m not the biggest Gervais fan, but he produces and stars in films and television shows, has podcasts and does standup comedy. Plus he’s constantly writing for this stuff.
Gervais was brilliant at the Globes. He got everybody talking about the event, and not one of his jokes missed. In fact, it was pretty tame by Gervais’ standards.
He’s constantly talking about the Globes is because people can’t stop asking him about it. This is a guy who works in showbiz, hosted a big event and told everybody there to get over themselves. That is actually ballsy.
AlGrat, the entertainment industry doesn’t need a roaster. It needs a motherfucking flamethrower.
