I realize that this may be a bit beyond most of your nerd grades here on Warming Glow — CONGRATULATIONS YOU’RE NOT A DORK — but the newswire is thin, and this is an intriguing possibility if you’re a “Doctor Who” fan. It’s all idle speculation and expressions of interest, of course, but in the wake of John Barrowman’s eagerness to have a female Doctor, Dame Helen Mirren — the hottest senior citizen on the planet — has expressed interest, according to the Daily Star.
“I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don’t want to just be his sidekick.”
On the one hand, “I would like to” doesn’t mean a thing, but on the other hand, she is a Dame, and in England, I’m pretty sure that gives her right of first refusal privileges on all British-based productions, as well as discounts on use of firing squads. And why in God’s name would Steven Moffat say no to Helen Mirren? She’s like royalty, and she could also kick his ass, and she’d make a killer 12th Doctor. With Amy and Rory leaving and the constant budgetary concerns, this is just the kind of shake-up the show needs.

I really don’t get this. The Doctors male not because they’re sexist, but because he’s a MALE, just as Christopher Eccleston was Northern because “every planet has a north”. Making the Doctor female would seem like desperate ratings grabbing, and would be a huge risk.
Helen Mirren is indeed awesome.
Anybody but Matt Smith. David Tennant did a great job, but Smith is just buttfucking the role into uselessness.

I think this is going to end up as fruitless as all the “Black/American/Eskimo James Bond???” rumors that go around every time they recast, but if ANY woman can pull off Doctor Who, it’s Mirren.
Besides, it’s f’n Doctor Who. It’s like if “Land of the Lost” was a constantly re-cast show that never went away.
Okay, and lets make Wonder Woman a man. And then James Bond an Asian (secret Asian man, secret Asian man!).

Helen Mirren would be an interesting/possibly great choice. Though I would have love to see what Chiwetal Ejiofor would do with the role, since he is rumored as one of the possible replacements for Matt Smith. That man is amazing and given his excellent turn as the operative in Serenity it would be interesting if he could put a new spin on the performance of the doctor that hasn’t been seen yet.
Or Ejiofor could do it in drag a la Kinky Boots.
Fabulous, my other thought was to just bring David Tennant back in drag. I could watch that forever.

I don’t get the fascination with Helen Mirren. Good actress, sure; better looking than most 60 year olds, probably; but hot, I would not go that far.
Great actress, and so hot in person. She’s twice my age and I had to remind myself not to drool all over her.
Eh. I know this is just a baseless rumor, but I’m not wild about it. I don’t like the idea of doing it just to shake things up.
Get Helen Mirren to play the Doctor because she is a tremendously gifted actress that could do great things with such a character driven show.
Don’t waste her and our time but bringing her on as a gimmick.
