Happy Endings (ABC) — The is the best sitcom on television not on Thursday nights. Get to know it because when the Alison Brie GIF well runs dry, we may have to resort to Eliza Coupe GIFs to fill the void. Tonight’s episode is called “Grinches Be Crazy.” That should be enough to pique your interest.
Up All Night (NBC) — What’s the consensus here on “Up All Night”? I’m a big fan of Christina Applegate and Will Arnett’s characters, but I’m still having some difficulties warming up to Maya Rudolph. Tonight, Jason Lee (Aaaalviiiiiin, *pulls trigger*) continues his arc as the boyfriend of Rudolph’s character.
Survivor: South Pacific (CBS) — The two most interesting characters on “Survivor” this season, Ozzie and the Harvard Dork, Cochran, are both on redemption island. One will leave tonight. I don’t know who to root for, but I’m kind of hoping the center of the island caves in and the Hantz kid falls through. He is creepy and I’m pretty sure a murderer. Tonight, family members show up and things get out of hand with Hantz’s dad.
Psych (USA) — There’s a lot to love about tonight’s episode, “The Toa of Gus,” the first of which is the fact that Deidrich Bader will guest star, as will Diora Baird as Gus’ love interest. Will she be sexy and green? Or just the regular kind of sexy?
American Horror Story: Here’s my problem with “American Horror Story”: All the characters are annoying, and none of them will ever leave, because even when they die, they’re still around to be annoying. And yet I continue to watch.
Modern Family: Obligatory.
LATE NIGHT LISTINGS: Kimmel has Russel Brand; Dave has Jessica Biel; Fallon has Zac Efron; Ralph Fiennes is on “The Daily Show”; Colbert has a ballet dancer; and if the pairing of Leno and Heigl wasn’t obnoxious enough for you last night, tonight Lea Michelle will show up. KILL IT WITH FIRE.
After the jump, Star Burns, a picture of Luis Guzman, and the rest of the “Community” cast remind us why we should save Greendale Community College.

Grinchies Be Crazy sounds like a Scrubs episode.
i gave up on ‘Up All Night’, just could not find the humor in anything and Maya Rudolph is terrible in everything except ‘Away We Go’
When did we all stop liking Modern Family and start liking this show I’ve never seen?
I’d say I’m more of a fan of DUAN than UAN, and I don’t even have an actual deadspin account. Actually I’m a little surprised that UAN is still on. Though to be fair I’m VERY surprised whenever I see “Rules of Engagement” ads during football. I thought that show would have been canceled five years ago.
Psych has pulled in a few crazy hot guest stars (Chelan Simmons, Stacy Keibler and Sarah Shahi in the same episode), so this sounds like par for the course for them. Good work, Gus and Shawn.
The day the Alison Brie GIF well runs dry is the day I take a bath with the toaster.
@ Kalbuck – I can’t speak for Dustin, but I still like “Modern Family” a bunch. “Happy Endings” has really started to win me over, though. It’s what “How I Met Your Mother” would be if that show was about fun people I’d actually hang out with.
Alwo Diora should have a way more happening career than she does right now. Do big ass titties count for NOTHING these days? What happened to my America?!
*Also
Sorry, still shaky from the thought of no Brie GIFs
There are no interesting characters on Survivor. They’re all attention whore assholes.
Really? Coupe over Cuthbert?
Don’t get me wrong. She’s a hard 8.5. But Elisha is hot, cute, funny and sexy as hell. She’s at least a 9. (This rating system is brought to you by a self admitted 2.)
Aww, hell. They’re both awesome. And Coupe really is way funnier than I thought she’d be. They carry that painfully unfunny brunette. She may be the funniest person since Louis CK in real life, but that ccharacter nneeds to die in a fire.
Running a Diora Baird picture that doesn’t show her tits is like showing the Mona Lisa without a face… a bold strategy
I’m the same way on American Horror Story, I just can’t seem to not watch it.
Also that will be the second sweet pair of boobs on Psych this season. Also it’s a fun, light-hearted show that’s worth watching. I stand by that.
Is there a reason Conan has been omitted from the Late-Night part of “What’s On Tonight?”
@Kalbuk- I think Happy Endings is just a better show period but for me modern fam dropped off big time about a month into season 2. Kinda just turned into a bunch of one-note characters: the fat latino kid is like a grown-up, the gay couple are super gay (and one is fat!), al bundy’s wife is hot, the mom is neortic and shrill, the dad is akward, the kids are dumb, smart, and dumb.
It’s not a bad show- and it captures the occasional clost-to-home family dynamic, but its rare when more than 1 out of the three family storyline’s are funny.
I’d only recommend “Up All Night” to parents of young kids. Arnett and Applegate sell those jokes well, but the workplace stuff is turrrrrrible.
“Modern Family” is still solid, but like Chazz said, it’s gotten surprisingly one-dimensional with the characters. Cam used to be a flamboyantly gay guy who was an offensive lineman in college and an ass-kicking clown, but lately he’s just been a flamboyantly gay guy. Meh.
I’m new to “Happy Endings,” but it’s definitely worth it. Someone here recommended the Halloween episode online, and that sold it.
Also- I agree with Dustin, no disrespect to Community or Parks & Rec but Happy Endings is probably the best 30 minutes on tv right now. Smart, quick jokes, with fun story lines that don’t drag or get caught up in trying to get us emotionally vested in any of the characters relationships.
The other thing for me is that it just nails that stage of life where your friends are an equal mix of married, dating, or single but everyone still lives in the city and no one has kids. Like DG said, it’s clearly written by people you’d want to hang out with and the cast uses the great writing to create characters that you want in your lives. It’s insane but right now it makes me sad that Max and Penny aren’t real people that I know.
@coked_up_jesus: ah, that girl in the mental hospital – Julianna Guill. I forgot about her. But imdb didn’t, thankfully, and neither did Google Images.
Disagree on Modern Family – chunkin punkin episode pitting dreamers against cynics, fat latino kid learns a lesson about stealing, a few other gems have kept me interested lately. Not community, but not 2.5 men.
@Chazz I’ve only ever seen one episode of Modern Family (the very sexy daughter was visiting a college) and I know thats a terribly small sample size, but my only take away from that show was how one-dimensional, stereotypical every character was. The gay couple were flamboyant beyond even parody, al bundys wife just looked hot and spoke with a very thick accent etc. Im sure the shows had better moments but i didn’t find one character enjoyable or appearing remotely complex.
@Kalbuck watch the Halloween episode from this year.
@Chazz Happy Endings is the comedy I look forward to the most right now, you nailed the description.
“Happy Endings” vs. “Modern Family” is sort of an apples and oranges thing, I think. “Happy Endings” isn’t as niche-y as “Community,” but it definitely skews younger and more pop culture savvy. Whereas “Modern Family” is just about the only sitcom on TV that appeals to a wide audience and doesn’t suck.
I love them both, though I’d give a slight edge to “Happy Endings.”
Well, it looks like I need to give it a shot. You guys have never steered me wrong before. *group hug*
Oh also, I find American Horror Story pretty decent despite not really liking any of the characters. It’s odd.
Aw shit, love for Community and Survivor…welcome new guy.
So, I’ve now watched 4 episodes of Happy Endings, and I still don’t find the humor in it. I mean it’s not offensive to my comedy tastes, like 2.5 Men or the Big Bang Theory, but it’s nowhere close to Parks & Rec, Community, Modern Family, 30 Rock or Curb.
CUTHBERT 4EVA
Dear Modern Family,
Please quit dressing Sarah Hyland in bikinis while selling me the idea that she’s in high school. It’s really freaking me out.
For what its worth, guitarjustin, she’s supposed to be a high school senior, so…um..its not AS bad..uh…y’know, I’m just gonna stop right there.
@kalbuck Crash course on “Happy Endings”

Up All Night is great. It’s not my favorite show, but it’s my girlfriend’s favorite show – which means that it’s my favorite show now somehow.
psych was quite funny…even though it was pretty obvious…”the barn of truth” had me dyin for some reason
@ Dustin – Respectfully, can we move the “what’s on tonight” posts to, say, lunchtime? Otherwise, can we just re-title it “look what you missed on TV last night”.
(because I only surf the innerwebs when I’m at work)
This episode of American Horror story blew me away. I’m usually pretty good at seeing plot points coming, but wow did this one surprise and pack a punch. My only concern is that they are progressing too fast. For the life of me I have no idea what they can fill a second season with.
