That above photo comes courtesy of Charley Koontz, who plays the spectacular Fat Neil in “Community.” He was on set filming “one of his favorite episodes” when he snapped the above picture and posted it on Facebook. I don’t know who is directly responsible for the chalkboard message, but the pop-culture allusion and the bitterness suggests Dan Harmon, who — when he’s not writing episodes of the most brilliant show on network television — can typically be found drunk-tweeting animus toward the NBC from a bubble bath or wallowing in self-pity. That’s what overly-sensitive, temperamental geniuses do. Dan Harmon is the comedy-show equivalent of “Sons of Anarchy’s” Kurt Sutter.
But here’s some real talk, some truth juice, some brutal honesty: It’s not NBC’s fault, nor is it the fault of Nielsen Ratings. Yes, Nielsen boxes are antiquated, and an absolutely ridiculous indicator of what people — especially the prized 18-49 year old demographic — actually watch. In fact, the networks are even beginning to realize that. They are making the slow transition to Rentrak’s set-top boxes. But you could combine all the Hulu, Netflix, illegal downloads, NBC.com, and DVR viewers of “Community” and it still wouldn’t amount to more than six, maybe seven million viewers. “Community” is not a network show; it doesn’t belong on NBC. Hell, it’s too good for NBC. It’s hilarious, ambitious, and experimental — three things that are rarely associated with the networks. The only reason it’s managed to last as long as it has is because NBC doesn’t know its ass from a hole in the ground, and the small but devoted viewership of “Community” and “Chuck” (who buy DVDs) makes those shows almost as profitable as the network’s flagship show, “The Biggest Loser.”
Indeed, Harmon (and we) should be thankful that NBC is as dysfunctional and ratings-starved as it is, because “Community” is only popular in a very small universe. Alison Brie is not adorning the covers of supermarket tabloids, Joel McHale is probably still better known for “The Soup,” and two-thirds of America probably doesn’t even know that Chevy Chase is still alive. The reason that “Community” is even as popular as it is in a very small universe is because of websites like this one, Uproxx, Pajiba, The AV Club, and Hitfix won’t stop talking about it. Alison Brie GIFs aren’t exactly burning up Yahoo News, nor are they splashed across HuffPo three times a week. Hell, three horny dudes on Tumblr are probably responsible for 80 percent of all of them (thank you, horny dudes!).
So, what’s the point? The point is this: F**k the Nielsen ratings. Fat Neil is awesome. And thank Tebow there are just enough devoted, hard-core, boob-obsessed appreciators of great goddamn comedy on a site like this to keep “Community” running as long as it has and more or less ensure that it will come back.
Oh, and here’s another shot from Koontz’s Facebook page, presumably from the “Community” dressing room.

(Huge Hat Tip to Michael C., a college buddy of Fat Neil, who alerted us to the photos)

Gotta be honest, the perfectly straight lines and consistently formed writing frighten me a little bit.
I noticed that too – kind of freaks me out.
I’m not suggesting that Dan Harmon is a serial killer, but let’s just say that if Fat Neil ever turns up dead from overeating, they should probably look around to see if the word “Gluttony” has been carved into anything and check it against his handwriting.
He probably cheated, like when Nelson told Lisa to use the multi-prong chalk holder thing (yeah, I have no idea what it’s called). DOUBLE LAYER OF SIMPSONS REFERENCE.
@JoshK that was the first thing i thought of.
Nah, the last AND is fucked up.
Oh.
You think the show will come back? Is this just your gut or have you actually heard rumors about this? I’m too drunk to google it.
Are You There, It’s Me Chelsea and Whitney (without it’s Office lead-in) will crash and burn harder than Work-It. NBC will need SOMETHING to fill time.
Who knows how accurate it actually is, but over at TVline they have community listed as a “safe bet” to return. That feels awfully optimistic, but hopefully true.
TVBytheNumbers essentially said the same thing. They said that even though the ratings are in the toilet, it’s losing viewers SLOWER than most of the other shows on NBC, which makes it not only a safe bet to return, but a pretty good bet for a fourth season.
My understanding is that they didn’t reduce the order for the full season (like what happened to Cougartown), so at some point they’ll burn off the rest of this season just because they paid for them. The bigger question is whether the show gets invited back for a fourth season, and I think that decision rides more on syndication issues than ratings. I think, anyway, I get confused easily ooh is that a cat video…
Oh, indeed, Dustin.
It is NBC’s fault. It’s all NBC’s fault. All of it is NBC’s fault. Every last thing.
Some old guy dented my car last week. NBC’s fault.
Aids. NBC’s fault.
Completely agree. The demographic for this show, which I think is basically ‘people who take the time to comment on television blogs,’ is very small. I have one friend who loves this show like I do and not a single other person who watches it. I know people who love Parks & Rec, Archer, and Always Sunny- good, smart, people whose taste in entertainment I completely respect who just don’t ‘get’ Community.
Speaking of Archer, It’s like my brain is a tree and Dan Harmon and the cast of Community are the little cookie elves running around inside. I’m a weird dude- so if this show seems like it’s basically written for my sense of humor and story telling style than how can it appeal to a wide audience?
My brother falls into the category you list above of people who dig P&R, Sunny, etc. but doesn’t like Community at all.
I actually don’t personally know anyone that watches the show (other than my wife) though it’s not for lack of trying to convert them on my part.
Same boat as the two of you. Most of my buddies dig the show, but at their core their just as fucked up and twisted as I am, so they don’t count. I know a few people of moderate intelligence that actually prefer Big Bang Theory because it’s “warmer and less manipulative.”
People give up on the show too quickly. My wife didn’t like the pilot and stopped watching, but when I rewatched season one, she suddenly “got it” for some bizarre reason. Now she’s a huge fan.
She’s also a fan of Parks and Sunny, but it never took her two tries to like those shows, although P&R started off poorly.
I think Alison Brie should just do her sexy Santa dance for me on repeat.
Boopie doop doop sex.
Yeah, it’s NBC’s fault for keeping this show that only we watch on the air for 1.5 more seasons than it earned, ratings-wise.
P.S. When Chelsea fails and Whitney is cancelled, they will not be replaced by Community. There are other mid season replacement shows already waiting in the wings.
Can’t they just sell the rights to FX already? A Sunny/Community/Archer block would KILL among the TV-blog-commenting demo.
/I know, I know, but a guy can dream.
Community with F/X’s IASIP and The League dialogue freedom would just about be the greatest thing ever.
I can’t help but read that chalkboard in Arnold’s voice from Kindergarten Cop.
Ha! +1
bitter? Yes. Hilarious? eh…
Yeah all of Harmon’s “misunderstood genius” rants actually make me like the show a little less each time just knowing he is behind them.
And then of course, I watch the show and forget that it was created by a giant egotistic douche.
I’d settle for someone finding out how DVR “views”/”replays” are counted toward ratings as compares to straight Nielson “live views”. I’d let Community play constantly when I wasn’t watching something else if I knew it’d help.
All NBC and no ratings make Harmon something something…
Well, it’s nice to see they are making new episodes. As long as they can end it by the season 4 finale, which would be Winger’s last year of school, it’s all gravy.
Re: Chevy Chase
When extolling the virtues of this show to one friend, I said something like “And Chevy Chase plays a bitter old racist perfectly.” His first question was “Chevy Chase is still alive?” So yeah. People actually think he’s dead.
In support of Community, I don’t even watch syndicated episodes of Big Bang.
