Bummer news for those who still watch Fox’s “House,” the medical procedural unofficially and loosely based on Sherlock Holmes, as the show has been canceled, effective at the end of the season. Yes, the show is stale; yes, “House” has been repeating itself for years, and yes it’s almost painfully predictable. But it was once a good show, and it’s still one of Fox’s better dramas, and whether you like the show anymore or not, television is better with Hugh Laurie.
According to the NYTimes:
“After much deliberation, the producers of House MD have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last.
“By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004,” the statement said.
“He should never be the last one to leave the party. How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air,” the statement said.
The decision was partly motivated by a desire to preserve the main character, Dr Gregory House, as an “enigmatic creature”.
I don’t expect there will be too much sadness. Even the 10 million viewers or so that continue to hang on are probably just listlessly waiting it out, half-focused on another formulaic plot. Most expected that this would be the last season, anyway.
Laurie has said that he will not do another TV show after “House,” but I suspect there are enough meaty roles in British television to lure him out at some point.
No finale date has been set.

Honestly I really loved earlier seasons of House newer seasons have been fine and I still watch them. Will be kind of sad to not have the character around anymore. Yeah the show was formulaic but the pranks were always pretty clever and the chicks were always top shelf.
I prefer hugh laurie doing awesome blues records than acting like a guy that really can’t realize that he’s an 8 year old.
I’ve never watched a single episode of House, so I have no idea who the school girl stripper is in the pic, but damn if she doesn’t look like Liz Lemon to me.

1) It gave an excuse to put Hugh Laurie on TV every week for years
2) While the medical mystery part of the show got old quickly, the character interactions kept the show strong and more entertaining than it should’ve been

When Hugh Laurie was bitching about missing his family and having to speak his lines in an American accent, I kinda thought it was less a negotiation tactic and more the truth. Hell, I’m an American and I’m goddamn tired of my accent.
As someone who’s watched it from the beginning, I think this show should’ve ended when House went into the mental facility. I actually have 6 episodes in my PVR I can’t bring myself to watch; now I have a reason to.

I still like House. And I’m glad it’s going off. It’s past due. I’ll watch it as long as it’s on and still entertains me, but it really should go.

Can any of y’all recommend a prime season or two from House for us late-to-the-game Hulu-TV watchers, like you did with the starting point for Parks and Rec? I’m still on season 2 of SOA, so this is for next month’s view pleasure.
House started off pretty well. It was pretty dark from the beginning, whereas the later seasons became softer and less edgy.
The original House had Jennifer Morrison. The New House had Olivia Wilde. I think that was season three or four, but I prefer the original House.

It’s being said everywhere that it was cancelled, but does it really count as it being cancelled if the producers are the ones who decide to end it?
I thought that when Lisa Edelstein declined to come back for this season it was because they were asking non-Hugh-Laurie cast members to take pay cuts so they could do “one last season” and she didn’t go for it. I’m guessing this is just becoming official now because Fox was busy begging Hugh Laurie to come back for additional seasons?
I gave up after last season. Maybe, MAYBE I’ll start watching.
