After only two episodes, Comedy Central has decided to renew its well-received new sketch show, “Key & Peele.” From HitFix:
“Key & Peele” premiered last month to strong reviews and 2.1 million viewers, making it Comedy Central’s top series launch since 2009 and making the renewal a no-brainer.
Looking deeper than the 2.1 million total viewers, “Key & Peele” performed particularly strongly among young male viewers, doing a 2.6 rating among men 1834 and a 3.3 rating among men 18-24, topping its time period in both demos for all of television.
I’ll be perfectly honest here: I have yet to see “Key & Peele.” Most of Comedy Central’s attempts at sketch shows since “Chappelle Show” haven’t impressedd me (lookin’ at you, “Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time”), so when I saw they were coming out with another one, I kind of just rolled my eyes and went back to watching food shows. HEY, speaking of food shows, did you guys watch “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” last night? Dennis Miller was on the show and he and Guy Fieri were shoving sandwiches into their faces, and — I swear to God I am not making this up — they both called pastrami “‘strami” THE ENTIRE TIME. It was like the show had been scripted by @DadBoner. The whole thing was horrifying. I rewound it and watched it three times.
Wait… where was I? Oh yeah, “Key & Peele.” I suppose I have to start watching this show now. I am an awesome TV blogger.

Show hasn’t impressed me. Felt very “dumbed down.”
based on the commercials alone, it looks obnoxiously unfunny
The first episode had some good stuff, the second one not so much in my opinion, but I’ll keep watching.
It’s still better than most SNL sketches, and also better than Nick Swardson’s show (besides the awesome Wheelchair Cat bit), and Jon Benjamin Has a Van (what a let down since I love the guy as a voice actor).
The show was pretty terrible. The ratings were helped by Tosh’s premiere, no doubt. We’ll see if it holds up.
I can’t wait for Nick Kroll’s sketch show in the summer.
Kroll has a pretty solid stand-up special available to stream on Netflix. The sketch bits were a little unnecessary in my opinion. They were very hit-or-miss, and likely akin to what we’ll see on his show. He’s a really funny guy; hopefully he gets some writers to help him strengthen the sketches.
I like Kroll’s stand-up, but most of his characters quickly grate on my nerves. About 90 seconds is all I can stomach of Fabrice Fabrice or Bobby Bottleservice before I’m reaching for the remote.
I caught an episode by accident the other night. I laughed.
What happened to “Important Things” with Demitri Martin? Seems like he just got bored with it and left.
He appeared on a good episode of WTF with Marc Maron where he explained why the show ended, but I can’t recall exactly why it was. I’m thinking it was mainly a cancellation, but he also was pretty tired of the format by the time that happened.
Nick Swardson’s Pretend time is a great show. I never watched it when it first aired, but after seeing it on netflix I thought it was hilarious and under rated.
Key & Peele has been funny at times, but it’s kind of hit or miss. It does get annoying with the BLACK PEOPLE DO THIS!! AND WHITE PEOPLE DO THIS!! shtick, but when they are not pandering to those kind of jokes it is pretty good.
But…but white people do do this while black people do that. I think this has been proven again and again by the professors at Comic View.
Pretend Time is an atrocity, and should definitely not reflect on Key & Peele. I haven’t caught an episode since the first one (finding myself unable to put off watching Justified instead), but I laughed a lot at that one.
(Talking about K&P in that second sentence; not Swardson.)
Pretend Time just devolved into weird sketches about anal rape and dead relatives. One or two spots a season, yes. Every episode, no.
As for Key & Peele, Obama Translated is funny funny funny stuff. The rest is kind of meh.
Key and Peele is pretty hit or miss, and is great to watch once it’s been recorded. Swardson’s show was a huge let down because his stand up and character acting are so great. I’d prefer to see comedian go into a show with an actual story – like Louie.
Very few sketch comedies work out. The only one to last has been SNL, which has turned into a show better watched on the internet.
carmanjellloooo
Peele’s glasses combined with his expression in that picture makes it look like he’s about to ask, “Where’s my Harper’s?”
DadBoner!
I don’t know why but I find this show extremely funny. I’m still saying, “AIDS. I got it. Need weed to cure it.” My dealer doesn’t find it that funny.
I’m glad the show got renewed. I think it will end up catching a groove and being really good. So far, it’s been mostly funny with a few misses, but I think it will get better over time.
