According to Variety, James Spader, who plays Dunder Mifflin/Sabre CEO Robert California, will not return for another season of “The Office.” Oh! Does this mean he’ll FINALLY make sex, lies, and blu-ray???
“James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television,” said “Office” executive producer Paul Lieberstein. “He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.” (Variety)
Robert California’s monologues were grand and he summed up the Black Eyed Peas (“It’s rock ‘n’ roll for people who don’t like rock ‘n’ roll. It’s rap for people who don’t like rap. It’s pop for people who don’t like pop”) better than anyone ever. But he also personified season eight of “The Office”: occasionally funny, sure, but not in a way that benefits character consistency or plot cohesion. He was a cartoon character on an increasingly cartoon-ish show, who never developed a good chemistry with Andy Bernard (a total disappointment). I’m not sure if I’ll miss him because that would imply caring enough about the NINTH SEASON of “The Office” to have an opinion.

Well, there goes my last bit of interest in The Office. Unless Ellie Kemper goes full frontal.
Kind of sad that Todd Packer is currently the funniest character on the show.
I dunno, I have a fondness for the humor that comes from Erin’s charmingly dim nature. And also for the reason(s?) dRail listed below.
Wait I thought this was the last season of The Office already… Isn’t Dwight getting his own horrible spin off? Yeah they have 100 other characters but with Jim being intolerable and Andy being neutered since being made boss they have no characters worth watching unless Stanley stays in Florida.
Hopefully they don’t plan to go full circle Gervais with that Catherine Tate character. She bugs my mind.
Let’s hope Spader takes the show with him. And allow me to jump on the full frontal Erin campaign.
/never getting special privileges
I’ll watch season 9 if Pam dresses like this every episode.
She got fat i dont think you want that now.
Florida Stanley aint care about no Robert California leaving.
Also, “one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television” cripes maybe Lieberstein really is as bad as Toby in real life.
Second aside, if Cathy had been sans bra with that t shirt in last weeks episode she totally could have scored Jimbo.
Robert California will be hardly missed, seeing as how I stopped watching the show when he appeared.
I liken the James Spader “Office” to the Bronson Pinchot years of “Step by Step,” when he replaced Cousin Cody… yep, almost exactly like that.
Wait… the office is still on the air?
I was hoping the title read, “‘THE OFFICE’ WILL LEAVE ‘THE OFFICE’ AT SEASON’S END”.
The Robert California story arc was the stupidest of all story arcs.
Booo… say what you will about Robert California, but when he talks, you can’t help but listen. Maybe an odd fit for the show, but isolated, his dialogue was incredible writing.
