Last night’s “Justified,” titled “The Devil You Know,” was yet another very strong episode. It was mostly centered around the hunt for Mags’ money, and the continued evolution of Boyd Crowder’s new gang of rapscallions. I’ll get to the highlights in a moment, but first allow me to make one observation: so far, the third season has done a great job of juggling a number of flaming knives. There is a lot going on in the show, and A LOT of characters to cover. For example, we’ve barely seen Tim, Art, Ava, or Winona in the past few weeks, and I barely even noticed because of how strong the Boyd/Raylan/Limehouse/Quarles storylines are shaping up. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Tim pop another dude in the apricot as soon as reasonably possible, but it’s a credit to the show that I can go a couple weeks without seeing characters I like and still come away delighted.
The highlights:
- Prison escapes featuring stone cold dudes with ponytails
- Dewey Crowe freaking the freak out — hilariously, I might add — while inside a bodybag
- HEADSHOTS
- Limehouse making threats and barbecue
- A discussion of which colleges have the prettiest girls
- “GIMME A GODDAMN AMEN!”
- Raylan neutralizing the criminal element using the front and rear bumpers of his car
- “You can pretty much live without a spleen.”
- “Goddamn if I don’t have to save Dickie Bennett.”
- Boyd Crowder proving yet again that he is the smartest criminal on television.
- Putting the Devil way down in a hole
Click through to the next page for Chet Manley’s awesome GIFs, and as always, feel free to engage in a spoiler-laden discussion in the comments. Writer Jon Worley said he’d swing by later this afternoon for the discussion (screen name: jubbs), so feel free to leave questions in the comments, then check back later in the day to see if they’ve been answered.

Neal McDonough as Robert Quarles is fantastic. I laughed my ass off when he made the threat to Raylan inside the trailer and smiled when Raylan took his picture. The casting on this show is just perfect. And the scenes between Raylan and Boyd are always so perfectly written. The line between sarcasm and friendship (uneasy as it may be) is just excellent. I may go back and start watching season one again just for kicks. I do wish that Mags had stayed for another season. She was also just fantastic.
This is such a fucking great show. It’s the only show on TV that I find myself constantly rewinding because it seems like every single line of dialogue is well written and has some weight to it. The scenes between Raylan and Boyd deserve multiple viewings.
Justified is rapidly becoming one of the best shows on TV; for me, it’s just behind Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. That says a lot about its quality.
Ok, superfan from Kentucky here…. when are we going to see some Maker’s Mark? You can’t have a show set in Kentucky that doesn’t feature Maker’s. Also, Boyd Crowder’s writing is nothing short of amazing. Love love love this show!
Whenever they pony up for the product placement. That’s the world we live in.
Well that won’t happen! They don’t do sponsorships. lol
“GIMME A GODDAMN AMEN!” was a touch more sinister but just as funny as:
“I didn’t get a harrumph outta that guy.”
“Give the governor a harrumph.”
Great to see Raylan catch up with Loretta. Just one of many treats in this episode. If, later on in the series, we could have some more of the IT guy – “What am I, an asshole?”* – then that would be great.
*Raylan/Olyphant’s delivery of the response “No?” to that question was one of the TV moments of last year.
The best part of that exchange? The Detroit gangster pronounced it like a Yankee (“Ah-men”) while the Kentucky boys pronounced it like a southerner (“Ay-men.”)
Pitch perfect.
Love everything about this show. The hour just flies past when it’s on. Dewey (Damon Herriman) is one of my favorites. Sure hope he’s around awhile — which may be hard if he’s missing body parts. Was concerned that Devil would be written out since Kevin Rankin’s other show (Unforgettable) seems to be doing well. Sometimes good story lines mean the end of interesting characters.
I love Boyd and Rylan—both are so fine and exciting!!! I love this show!!!!
“Putting the Devil way down in a hole”

I miss you, Dewey. Only the second Kentucky sheriff to be taken out via sniper.
So many things about this episode were awesome….Dewey in a bodybag, Raylan using his car and of course “the disturbance in the force” …What great lines/actors! My only request is using Clayne Crawford a whole lot more! Oh and could you use less of my kin, it is getting embarassing….
So many characters, each one excellent, but I sure loved the Dewey and Dickie stuff..oh my gosh they are great. Too many great lines and scenes to list but I keep thanking my bff for turning me on to this show last year. I hardly watch television but this stuff is PRIMO.
The Dewey Crowe-Dickie stuff is almost as good as Raylan-Boyd when they get rolling. Although I have to disapprove of Dickie’s insistence in allowing his hair to steal the show from Boyd’s.
I think I saw someone on the AVclub refer to Dickie as a “hillbilly Jack Sparrow”, which I now find impossible to get out of my head.
Damnit! Uproxxxxxxxx hates my question, but I refuse to let it fade out! What is the ending to Quarles’ track-gun story?!
[If this question ends up in quintuplicate, I apologize to our mods]

No one will ever know. It’s our “rosebud.”
So he learned it from sledding then? I suppose he *did* say it was Christmas-related…
Open question for all super awesome Elmore Leonard fans: Have read many of his really old Westerns in a short stories collection, also have read “The Hot Kid”. Just bought “Raylan”, and I’m wondering, which of his works should I pick up next?
Thanks in advance, humans.

If you’re a Raylan fan, “Pronto” and “Riding the Rap,” and the story “Fire in the Hole” which is in the collection “When the Women Come Out to Dance.” As for the rest of the canon, I love “Swag,” “Valdez is Coming,” “Rum Punch,” “Gold Coast,” and many others.
Is the storyline of the individual tied to Quarles’s bed going to be cleared up in a future episode?
Quarles said they don’t have bourbon in Detroit? Darlin’, KY bourbon is sold all around the world! He just doesn’t know where to look.
Best line for me was Boyd saying he felt a “disturbance in the Force”, right before Raylan walked into the bar — excellent! Can’t say I was sorry to see the Devil get his due, and I do love me some Dewey and Dickie! So glad Jeremy Davies is back this season. This show never disappoints!

Well, certain bourbons are tough to find even out here in Los Angeles. I assume the purveyors of fine bourbon in Detroit are few. There are online sellers, but even then… getting a good bottle of Pappy online is not easy.
Pappy is impossible to find in a lot of regions (my own included, sadly). I wouldn’t be surprised at all to find that the same is true of Detroit.
I’ve had an unreal string of luck finding Pappy at completely rando locations in the Northeast. Am wiling to sell the list… in exchange for Pappy.
Illinoisan here. I can occasionally find Pappy, but it comes and goes, and we aren’t treated to the entire catalog, only one or two varieties.
Yes but we do need way more of Tim, I find myself looking for him every week, he could be a really strong person, hooked up with Raylan. I’ll be waiting. I’m 66 so don’t make me wait too long.
:):)
Someone, good or bad, will eventually follow Quarles down from Detroit right? If so, any plans for any of EL motor-city characters to make an appearance?
Anyone else notice the quick shot of a Washington Capitals mug on Quarles’ desk? Any light to be shed on this?

No significance to Quarles’ character intended.
I’m curious: when Limehouse pointed out that Mags had spent the nest egg on land, he was indicating that receipts were tracked in it, correct? I’ve seen other discussions that got the impression they were IOUs because he screwed the family somehow, which I really didn’t get from the scene. Sure, Dickie was pissed and surprised, but it didn’t seem like Limehouse was the one at fault. Did I misread the scene?
I’d also be interested to hear if we find out the backstory of the debt Limehouse owed to the Bennets. Does that come clear later in the season? It’s a minor detail, but the show seems to thrive on those anyway.

Let me answer with a non-answer: keep watching.
Damn, I was hoping that first .gif would have the entire “Dewey in a bodybag” dance. That scene was terrific.
@DG Nice Wire reference. Props.
Great episode, as per usual. Hoping we get more Raylan/Loretta dialogue this season. Has to happen, right jubbs?

My lips are sealed.
Hey Jubbs –
Just wanted to say I love the implied moral judgment that any man who pours Pappy in his coffee deserves to get shot in the head, while the man who drinks it neat gets to do the shooting and inherit the kingdom. I’m pretty sure they taught us that in kindergarten as the Golden Rule or somesuch.

You see through us.
jubbs, What is your favorite Elmore Leonard book?
Verified
SWAG.
Thanks.
Hey Jdubbs, why did you choose Ole Miss and Vanderbilt? Please show your work.
Verified
The Ole Miss / SAT dialogue is from Elmore Leonard’s new book. Not sure where the Vanderbilt came from.
Verified
Actually, upon inspection, they’re both part of a little speech from the book. Chapter 3.
Also, go to Vanderbilt and see the work there.
Boyd Crowder is awesome.
When are we getting the Dickie & Dewey buddy comedy?
I don’t know, but in the first episode Dickie will bring home cole slaw for dinner. Hilarity will ensue.
It pleases me that the RUN DMC logo will never run out of uses.
The Hunt for Mags’ Money is the greatest City Slickers movie that never was.
SOMEONE CALL JACK PALANCE!
What? He’s dead?
SOMEONE REANIMATE JACK PALANCE!
God knows he’s doing one-armed push-ups in Heaven.
Best episode so far this season in my opinion. It was lacking Winona (boo!), but whenever Raylan has to chase people, the show really does well.
Funny as hell too.
So, so funny. I don’t recall having laughed that often during any other episode. The sarcasm level was delightful.
I’m not sure that I can wait a whole week to watch Dewey Crowe’s story play out. Put an idiot with everything to lose on a time bomb of a scavenger hunt for cash? Yes, please.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I live about 40 minutes from Harlan, and in case anyone had wondered about the realism of this show, let me just tell you that outside of Raylen (who is a necessary Supercop) pretty much every character is way too believable. Especially Gary from season 1/2. Fuck, I hate Gary.
Could anyone else tell if that was a bottle of Pappy that Quarles was drinking? It looked like it. DETROIT MOBSTERS GOT FINE TASTES.
Verified
Pappy is Quarles’ drink. He orders it by name next week. Shout outs!
Question for Jon/Jubbs- I think you mentioned last week that aspects of Leonard’s new book show up in Season 2 and 3. Would you recommend holding off on reading it until Season 3 is complete?
Verified
Plot-wise, it won’t ruin much. We adapted characters, scenes, and dialogue snippets. Next week’s episode has the most adapted stuff.
Hey Jubbs -
From whence did the Hendersonville, TN, reference come? That’s my neck of the woods. Very cool to hear a hometown reference on a great show like this. Interesting note on Johnny Cash’s house…in 2006 it was sold to Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees (or at least a company owned by him) and then a couple of years ago, it burned to the ground. Very sad. Last time I saw it from the lake, it was still a charred mess.
And amen on Ole Miss having the best looking girls. Vanderbilt is WAY down on that list.
Verified
I think the Hendersonville thing was a Taylor Elmore original.
I could listen to Boyd use big words and full titles on a loop for an hour.
Verified
Next week he quotes Saul Bellow. Watch out.
I was ashamed of myself for thinking Boyd’s boys could be bought.
Amen to Chet Manley for getting to both the forward and reverse run over gifs.
Love the Boyd storyline, especially because I feel like it is setting him up for: go big or GTFO.
Question for Jon Worley aka jubbs: What is your favorite Elmore Leonard book?
Follow up question- what is your favorite adaptation of Leonard’s work? I think it goes
1. Out of Sight
2. Get Shorty
3. Jackie Brown
4. Sisko
5. everything else
99. Be Cool
I think “3:10 to Yuma” is top 5 material.
Forgot about that one. I think I read that Leonard didn’t like that adaptation but I would put it as no. 3.
The movie version of “Freaky Deaky” is being released sometime this year.
Verified
As I said above, “Swag” is my favorite book. As film adaptations go, “Jackie Brown.” A good obscure one is “Valdez is Coming,” a gritty western w/ Burt Lancaster.
Verified
But yes, “Out of Sight” and “Get Shorty” are both very good.
Best line of the night, “Gettin’ old ain’t for pussies.”
That was my favorite too. Can’t wait for the collected wisdom of Raylan Givens to come out as a book.
I sense a disturbance in the force.
This line made me unreasonably happy.
