Joel McHale revealed to TV Guide over the weekend that a character from NBC’s “Community” will die in an upcoming episode. McHale didn’t much in the way of clues, except this:
“A character from the show will die,” reveals star Joel McHale. He says the victim, although probably not one of the comedy’s main stars, is “someone you’ve seen a lot. And he dies in the mid-afternoon.”
So, we know it’s a recurring character, but we can rule out any of the named cast members. Who will it be? Let’s place odds:
Leonard Briggs (4-1) — He’s the oldest character on the show, he’s had his hip replaced, and he rides around in a wheelchair. This seems logical. Maybe too logical?
Alex “Star-Burns” Osbourne (12-1) — He is a drug dealer, which can be a dangerous profession. But then again, he only deals marijuana, and his clients are Greendale students.
Fat Neil (6-1) — Fat Neil is both fat, which makes him a health risk, and he’s manic depressive, having considered suicide once before.
Magnitude (5-1) — Although not a high risk for death, his catchphrase, “Pop Pop,” would make him a likely candidate as a gunshot victim.
Professor Ian Duncan (20-1) — He does have a huge drinking problem and his with rivalry with Señor Chang could lead to violence.
Vice Dean Robert Laybourn (7-1) — In addition to being overweight, Vice Dean Laybourne is the true power of Greendale, which could develop into a “Game of Thrones” type plotline, in which he’s picked off by Dean Pelton.
Dr. Marshall Kane (12-1) — He has served prison time, and is uncomfortable with the way that the world has changed in the two decades he spent inside. This could provoke violence, or even suicide, particularly if faced with the prospect of handling those new, tiny LEGOs.
The Greendale Human Being (15-1) — Fumes from magic markers used on his mascot costume have been known to make him aggressive; they could also potentially be lethal.
Annie’s Boobs (2-1) — It is a monkey that lives in the heating ducts, plus the death of Annie’s Boobs has the greatest comedic potential.

I hope it’s Chang. I used to like him on the show, but lately he has just been getting on my nerves.
Kickpuncher (50-1) – it’s a longshot with a big payoff, but the action hero’s adventures certainly do put him in harm’s way on a regular basis.
Jerry (15-1) – the janitor who spotted Troy’s incredible plumbing abilities may be killed off as a source of inspiration for Troy, or as part of a conspiracy that involved the air conditioning repair school.
Señor Chang (Pick’em) — While Ken Jeong is a good actor, this character is awful and since he’s no longer teaching, there’s really no point to him being around as much as he is, yet he keeps getting awkardly inserted into story lines. Killing him would be a good way to Chang things up (sorry).
If Community does a Game of Thrones type episode where rival factions split the school in a power struggle and Annie gets Emilia Clarke style naked….I will become so happy that I’ll require medication.
If it’s “someone we’ve seen a lot” as McHale said, we can rule out Fat Neil and Michael K Williams’s character I think, they’re relatively recent additions, and haven’t been featured a lot after their centric-episodes.
Man, killing a character off seems a little dark. But it’s Community, so I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
My money’s on Annie’s Boobs.
Duncan. Oh, it shall happen.
I’m drawing a blank here. Does Community have a return date yet?
Leonard does have three farting strikes against him.
Magnitude. ‘Cause the black dudes always get killed first.
+1
Except for Troy in ‘Epidemiology’
His heart goes “pop pop.”
“And he dies in the mid-afternoon” seems like a clue. But now I have that stupid 9 in the afternoon song stuck in my head.
Dr. Rich is killed doing some good deed, thereby validating Jeff Winger’s misanthropy.
And Annie is so distraught by her former love interest’s death that she acts out. In sexual ways. And Community moves to HBO for a few episodes. Please.
I hope it’s Chang, I’m tired of his antics but realistically I’m gonna say Leonard, he’ll die in some sort of turf war with a gang of old guys from City College.
My money would be on Star-Burns. Dino has said on WTF that he’s not a fan of acting and prefers writing. But that was over a year ago, so I could be way off. Plus, “mid-afternoon” makes me think of 4:20.
This could lead to an “After School Special” type episode of Community. You’re on to something with the 4:20 idea…Star-Burns dies from a marijuana overdose (yeah, I know) and the gang tries to save Britta before it’s too late for her.
Vicki. And there will be an outpouring of hilarious sadness and tributes. Called it.
hoping for chang / over it.
So how do we bet on this? I’ll just send an envelope to you with my user name, the word “Magnitude” and $4.15 in loose dimes and nickels.
You send me fortune.
Come on, you guys. It’s Fat Neil.
Starburns sells more than pot. He has ecstasy on him in the first Halloween episode and he trades pierce pills.
Oooh! I know who it is! [twitpic.com]
… wait…
I thought Community wasn’t going to resort to cheap tricks or begging?
(PLEASE Tell your friends about this show!)
The statue of Luis Guzman falls over, killing Luis Guzman.
@Hookie:
Marion Coatsworth-Hay?
I will take those 20 to 1 odds on Duncan. He is someone we have seen a great deal in the first two seasons but has been conspicuously absent this year. My guess is John Oliver’s schedule is no longer allowing him to do the show anymore and this is a way to write his character off.
Annie’s Boobs, I was pretty sure it’s been talked about already. Isn’t it going to be the Law and Order episode?
The “someone you’ve seen a lot” rules out Laybourn and Kane. I really doubt it’ll be Leonard, he’s too awesome. And even though Dustin didn’t mention him, how about Garrett at 10-1?
The law & order episode has to have some clues.
To the older post!
Annie’s hymen….??
I’m betting Leonard or Annie’s Boobs, since either of those could make sense. Killing off any of the younger folks would be too dark for the show. I could also see them possibly killing Chang, if they were going for any of the main cast. He’s been a little hard-up for plots lately, and that one with him as the undercover PI was pretty ridiculous. (I did enjoy his and Britta’s love/hate thing in that early S3 episode, though!)
Fat Neil will die in a campus wide LARP game when someone accidentally uses a real weapon brought by Chang.
I would approve of Chang dying, but that’s not gonna happen. I wanna say it’s Starburns or Duncan.
My money is on the plumber that wants Troy to take up plumbing
I’d say it’s Leonard
It’s Chang. I called it months ago and they’ve made multiple hints already.

Thanks for the heads up, but you still didn’t weigh in on which member of the cast you think is going to die?
I *actually* know who it is, but I won’t ruin it in a public setting such as this. So if anyone is interested in knowing who and how, please message me on facebook.
Gotta be Senor Chang. No offense to Ken Jeong and all his awesome work, but they’ve been struggling with his place in the show for two seasons. He’s a writing dilemma that’s gotta be dealt with. It’s time for them to make a Chang for the better
