In honor of “The Simpsons” upcoming 500th episode, two of the shows fans sat down to try to break the Guinness World Record for most consecutive hours of television watched. Good news: They did it! Bad news: I imagine they smell terrible.
Jeremiah Franco from Los Angeles, Cali, and Carin Shreve from Acampo, Cali, watched 86 hours and 37 minutes of The Simpsons to break the record at a special event hosted by Fox in Los Angeles that began Feb. 8. Along with bragging rights, the duo took home $10,500 each and a whole lot of Simpsons swag. [TV Guide]
I like “The Simpsons” as much as any American male in his mid-to-late 20s, but HOLY LORD this sounds terrible. Eighty-six straight hours? Sheesh. I’m no math whiz, but if my calculations are correct [pulls out abacus], at 22 minutes per episode, this works out to [carries the one], like, a frillionty episodes. I may have rounded up a little.
I suppose this is where I’m supposed to make a topical reference to the show, but my brain is mush today and I can’t think of one, so I’m just going to post this 10 minute loop of the “Dental plan! Lisa needs braces!” clip. Someone should try to watch this for 86 consecutive hours. That would be impressive. And by “impressive,” I mean “a horrifying form of torture I wouldn’t wish on anyone except maybe that greaseball diner manager Jeff from ‘Saved by the Bell.’” I hate that guy.

Hmm, Sounds like this “Jeremiah” Franco, if that is his real name, (it’s not) is really good at dicknosing the Guinness Book of World Records.
That seems like a perfectly cromulent use of one’s time
That would have been a much better headline. You take over for the rest of the day.
REALLY? I feel so embiggened right now
Turns out this “Jeremiah Franco” was actually a ruthless serial killer named “Fritz Haarmann.”
I’m surprised this didn’t happen.
86 hours and 37 minutes…that’s it?!?! I will do that for a case of Smithwicks, a slab of ribs, pizza and some Depends.
For those that might be wondering, these folks watched 5,197 minutes of The Simpsons. Through the inverse law of proportions division, at 22 minutes an episode, they watched about 236 episodes.
If they watched the series chronologically, they’d be almost halfway through Season 11.
So they watched the good episodes?
I watched a couple minutes of that video then skipped to the end. I bet there was porn in the middle, but I can’t be bothered to check.
I once watched 20 hours of a Beavis & Butthead marathon without even trying, so 66 more seems doable if there’s $10,500 riding on it.
The University of Georgia is having a round table discussion tomorrow on whether or not it’s still funny.
