On March 8, 2012, Walking Dead Forums poster “rickfan22” asked his fellow message board visitors [sic’d], “I know I am probably going to get flamed for this, but I just wanted to know why everyone has animosity for Lori? I know she has done some stuff that is stupid (driving and hitting that walker then crashing the car was really dumb), but people LOATHE her for some reason…I welcome opinions, but please have some info to back your responses. I don't want to see ‘She is just a dumb bitch.’”
This past Sunday, only 90 minutes after season two ended with a whiny, Carl Face'd whimper, “rickfan22” posted the 129th update to the thread: “Well, the season finale did it. I officially hate Lori right now, and most of the group. Everyone flipping sh*t at Rick for doing what had to be done with Shane, and Lori acting the way she did after SHE TOLD HIM TO KILL HIM! God I despise that woman right now...”
That effectively sums up the entire Internet’s reaction Lori; it just took “rickfan22” longer to realize it than most. I’ve never seen such an outpour of ill-will against one character (deservedly so) as I have in the last two days for Lori Grimes. Here are some of my favorites.

I honestly hate her so much that the actress is ruined. I literally hate her stupid face.
Total agreement. She is now the Walter Peck of the decade. Everytime I see this actress I will change the channel.
That’s exactly how I felt after Penny Johnson Jerald’s stint as Sherry Palmer on 24. Can’t stand her. Low and behold, she took over as Lieutenant on Castle this season, one of my favorite shows.
I agree with every word that CDS923 just typed. RIP Captain Montgomery.
Sherry Palmer was the worst….. the WORST!
She is the weakest, most insufferable, awful, stereotypical female character i’ve ever seen
How is she weak? She helps the group by doing the laundry!
“I’ve never seen such an outpour of ill-will against one character (deservedly so) as I have in the last two days for Lori Grimes.”
Even more ill-will towards her than Joffrey from GoT?
Joffrey is someone you love to hate. Lori is someone you loathe with every fiber of your being.
O.K., I don’t watch TWD but I can see the difference. Kind of like Angela on Boardwalk Empire, I didn’t love to hate her, I just hated her.
I think Joffrey is still an interesting character and has clear motivations. They were doing that GoT bracket over on screen junkies and he got stomped in the first round, but I voted for him. He wasn’t my final four, but he’s way more developed than most characters on tv.
What Hammer said. Joffrey’s also a great character whose motives make sense, considering he’s a horny, lust-filled teenager with unlimited power; Lori changes episode-by-episode, and you never know what the hell she wants.
Underdogpile!
Seriously, though, the things that make Joffrey loathsome are also what make him a great character, while the things that make Lori loathsome are what make her into a terrible character.
People hate Lori because she’s terribly written.
While the characters you hate in GoT (and the books), you genuinely hate them as horrible human beings that do despicable things.
That’s because GRRM is a great writer, while the Walking Dead’s writing team SUCKS.
I gave up on Walking Dead a year ago and I still hate her.
I honestly don’t think she annoyed me much in season one. So maybe Darabont was doing something right.
But the writers are blowing characterization on LOTS of characters. After all the times he’s been talked to by his dad, taught about guns by Rick AND Shane, Carl goes and steals Darryl’s gun. Carol decides suddenly that Rick is leading the group the wrong way. Glen has been a catatonic wuss. Hershel became wishy-washy and now does whatever Rick says. Rick decides the group is no longer a democracy (I would have gone my own way the second those words left his mouth). T-dog is now a non-character.
None of them are really characters. They are plot devices that change personality to suit lazy writers.
Lori however is probably every horrible aspect of a woman a man could conjure up. I mean the dudes that wrote the bible would applaud how much she sets her gender back.
Ironic part is from what I just wrote you’d think I hated the show, but I don’t. I look forward to it. But there are real hurdles to entertainment that are made up for by some great zombie kills.
Couldn’t agree more Hammer. The characters take on whatever motivations that are required to move the plot forward. I’m holding out hope that once Mazzara and the writers can De-Darabont the show there’ll be a lot less of that nonsense.
Unrelated but I’ve started reading the comic (at issue 12 now), and it kicks so much ass, I highly recommend it to all.
I’ll never understand why oodles of bandwidth are dedicated to discussing the flaws of a bad show. Seriously, can that be a discussion post? What is it about The Walking Dead that elicits such strong negative reaction, even amongst its fans? Is it because we want to like the show and can’t? Because we feel it’s a wasted opportunity to do something great on TV? Because it’s more fun to bash than watch at this point? Seven million people watch WD every week and I don’t know one person that truly loves it. So what’s the draw, and what’s so appealing about the (deserved) criticism?
I think it started off so strong that it drew in a lot of intelligent viewers, and then it just shit all over its audience that it turned into a hate-watch.
I think it has to do with the concept of a zombie apocalypse being pretty fascinating. I read World War Z and spent like two weeks thinking about the implications. It’s fun to speculate about things like that, and I think that’s why people get so frustrated with TWD, because it SHOULD be fun to have a show that treats a zombie apocalypse as a reality and deals with all that follows, but apparently TWD does a very bad job of that.
If I had GIF powers, my response to Queefer would be one of the new ninja lady cutting off the head of a zombie with a katana blade.
From my standpoint, it’s the idea that there are no characters that I truly like, or can relate to. That, and the way the writers develop the characters is just plain moronic.I understand that the hook to the show was the zombies, and in order to survive as a series, there would have to be a lot of characterization and development in order to flesh the series out and make it more than “OH LOOK, ZOMBIES!”, but the writers have done an insanely poor job of it. I started out loving TWD, but as the dialog and storytelling got more inane, and the zombies started disappearing, it just got boring. Finally gave it up after the “repremiere” of season 2.
I should say that I loved the pilot and consider it one of the best first episodes of any modern television show. The precipitous, continuous drop in quality from that point on was more frustrating than anything, and I tuned out after three episodes of season 2.
Taco, I read the recap and noticed how The Internet is reacting to the appearance of this new chick. But to me, that only reinforces how poor the second season was. When some stranger cutting the heads off a zombie for 3 seconds is the most exciting part of an entire arc, you’re probably in trouble.
I just meant the zombie kills in general. That was a particularly awesome one.
I bet before the Zombie Apocalypse Lori was cheating on Rick. She’d be feeding Carl in high chair, all the sudden the new hot mail man comes buy..Carl climbs out of high chair and does something stupid because he is a stupid baby all while the mail man is pounding the good out of Lori…then she tells Rick she was raped by the mail man but she tells the mail man that Rick is an abusive asshole..
Carl has teleportation powers, he got scratched by a radioactive zombie cat.
You can’t try to establish a character as the matriarch when they possess 0 maternal instinct whatsoever.
Correction: it has to be funny in order to work, i.e. Lucille Bluth
Who’s the better mother: Lori Grimes or Betty Draper? A true Sophie’s choice.
Snooki is a better mother than Lori Grimes.
I get the feeling that she doesn’t particularly care for her husband or son.
Lori pulls feminism back 30 years. She berates people who do nothing but kill zombies like badasses, she never looks after her son, who is turning out to be a real messed up kid, and getting knocked up is one of the most annoying things one can do. The moment that infant cries, they’re all dead.
Ok people; just drop the show and read the comics. They’re better and have 300% more zombie kills her issue.
Yeah, but…reading.
Hate to be the comic book guy, but Laurie isn’t the Heroine of the comics. Michonne is, and will continue to melt your face hard. Laurie pretty much sucks in the comics too. She’s a shit mother. And lots of times, in the comics, people call out how shit she is. I guess I don’t have too much hate for her because, well, again comic book future knowledge.
The comics at least tried to explain her random mood swings, albeit with the misogynistic “lol she’s preggers” explanation. TV Lori just has zero motivation.
I would say the Heroine role is split between Michonne and Andrea. Both are bad ass in their respective ways
I have hated Lori since she was on Prison Break. Absolutely horrible acting.
She’s like January Jones, only not that hot and a fictional character.
can’t wait until we found out lori is a ROBOT.
SPOILERS
If they follow the prison arc closely to how it happens in the comics we won’t have to put up with Lori after this season.
I want her to miscarry so that a badass zombie infant pulls an Alien chest-burster on her.
SPOILERS:
Ok here is the thing I just don’t like her me and people I know call her Whori Lori. I also hate Carl he gets in the way of Rick making decisions and is always getting into some dangerous situation, but he probably is going anywhere anytime soon if the comics are any indication.Lori is just a bad mother and a bad wife on top of that. Half of the time its “WHERE”S CARL?!” she can’t even keep track of him for 1 episode. Dale had to go he did nothing for the group. Moral support? Please all he does is eat, sleep and sit on top of his RV. I also think T-Dog and Carol are useless too. I have to say I love the show and even though I dislike characters it doesn’t make me watch to watch it any less. People are way to critical about character development and whine too much “My character died in a zombie film…I’m done!”. This is a interpretation from a comic so I’m certain they have a cut off. They are really close to the comic so they have to draw somethings out or they will catch up and they will be making episodes that have nothing to to with the comic. This is a end of the world situation people are gonna change and quick so don’t throw “People are changing too quick!” I mean come on the crap they have seen happen I’d probably be a different person after 3 weeks to a month top. Constant death couple with scarce food, people trying to kill and take what you have, internal conflicts, worrying about loved ones.I mean any day could be your last. All in all I love the show so if you have problems with it don’t watch it.
typo “I also hate Carl he gets in the way of Rick making decisions and is always getting into some dangerous situation, but he probably isn’t going anywhere anytime soon if the comics are any indication.”
I think the writers where trying to compare to Hamlet in certain scenes but when they realized it was futile, they backed away from it. In the comics paceing was just right, but in the show you only have 40 minutes cause (gots to get paid) comercials screw up your viewing pleasures. Michone will melt your faces!!!!
Well this does it. Lori is the new Kate (from Lost).
or Skylar from Breaking Bad… she needs to go too
She and her baby die in the books if that’s what you guys want. I’m only here for Andrea and Michonne.
Sort of off topic, sort of not… does anyone else HATE the way Rick says Lori? I swear he adds 5 O’s or 2 U’s
LOOOOOri
LUUri
You’d think that after the first or second time your kid sneaks off and almost dies you might keep closer tabs on him. I hate hearing “He was in the house, now he’s not…”
99 problems takes it home.. I’m dying..
Read the comics, I don’t think a lot of shit goes down in the show…they gotta dramatize all that and *surprise* the women be crazy.
Shane doesn’t die that way…just sayin’
Lori:
~is a shitty parent who doesn’t look after her kid, yet gets knocked up again during a zombie apocalypse because, that’s a great idea
~is a manipulative byatch who uses Shane and Rick, sets them against each other, works Shane’s final sane nerve, then berates her husband for killing Shane, when she all but asked him to.
~thinks a woman’s place is in the kitchen and laundry room and has no problem telling that to your face.
Should I go on?
OMG I HATE HER SOOO MUCH! Everyone does, and watch….i bet they will kill off all our favorite characters, keep that heifer alive! Shes a horrible mother, unfaithful wife….I mean really people, how long do you think a human body n a coma go without life support of some sort…answer, not that long. So he’s ‘corps’ isnt even cold and she’s banging his best friend. She’s lazy, self adsorbed, wanna be queen bee with no back bone…really the show could do better without her….the show is great enough without having that ‘character you hate’ BS! And when it happens (positive thinking) I hope her death is epic!
I’d like to see all of you trying to raise a child in an apocalypse -.-. I dont like her that much either but I mean, there’s no room for the ¨perfect family¨ in TWD’s world anymore >.>. Is not only her fault Rick takes wrong decisions too when it comes to Carl (who is very annoying too). What Im trying to say is that you’re ignoring the fact that they’re not in a normal world anymore…Is she annoying sometimes? Yea, But I don’t hate her and I didn’t want her to die either YES spoiler HA!
You people just don’t understand. You don’t know what it’s like to be pregnant in a DAMNED zombie Apocalypse. Everything not going right, your hormones going crazy! I never told Rick to kill Shane, I WARNED him. I didn’t want Rick BECOMING Shane. Check yourselves, you selfish assholes.
Why I disliked Lori… she was devoid of any emotion but annoyance. She treated Shane like garbage despite the fact that he put himself in great danger to save her and her son and even Rick (It was no wonder he went nuts, but why he continued to have feelings for her is beyond me… she was cruel and lacked any sort of endearing personality). And what kind of moron thinks morning after pills will cause an abortion after you’ve already tested positive for pregnancy. duh.
I don’t know if she was just given such a horrible character that the actress could do nothing to salvage it, or if it was a combination of bad script and actress who was unable to still make a terrible character endearing. I think it was the second. Shane may have been a moron for caring for Lori and not so nice for shooting Otis ;p yet I *liked* him. The actor lended pathos to a character who may have otherwise been disliked.
As an aside, I did like Lori slightly more in the very first episode, because honestly, she had far more chemistry with Shane than with Rick. I give that credit to Shane though. Rick and Lori’s characters had nothing but coldness between them even in important what-should-have-been very emotional moments!
one more note…. she doesn’t want her 12 year old son to learn how to shoot a gun? IN A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?! Really??!!! lol total detachment from reality where her son was concerned for wanting him to learn how to SURVIVE and meanwhile she didn’t know where he was half the time XD
