People who complain bitterly about “The Walking Dead” might complain less so if they had “Terra Nova” as a comparison point. The Spielberg-produced series basically had all the problems of Darabont’s “The Walking Dead,” times 100. There were a quarter as many dinosaurs in “Terra Nova” as there are zombies in “The Walking Dead,” the forward action on “Terra Nova” is somehow even more glacially paced than “The Walking Dead,” and “Terra Nova” — with the exception of Stephen Lang — had actors five times more wooden and bland than anyone on “The Walking Dead.” It’s almost impossible to imagine that a sci-fi series produced by Spielberg that involved deadly dinosaurs, time travel, and an alternate universe could be as boring as “Terra Nova,” but somehow, they managed that feat.
The series debuted last fall with middling ratings, and never managed to catch on with the family audiences for which it was aimed. In the network universe we live in now, middling ratings might have kept it alive but for the fact that “Terra Nova” was a wildly expensive show with a very long production cycle. Fox is cancelling it.
The sort of fun irony here is that Fox renewed “Fringe” last season despite significantly lower ratings than “Terra Nova” (granted, it was on a Friday night compared to Monday night), but even still, ratings for “Fringe” haven’t been as good as ratings were for “Terra Nova” since “Fringe’s” second season. The reverse backstabbing irony, however, is that “Firefly” also had better ratings than “Fringe” does now, and yet it was canceled after 13 episodes were aired out of order.
The lesson here, as it is in all cases where Fox is involved — whether they made the right decision or not — is, as always: Screw Fox.

How do you make time travel and dinosaurs boring?! That’s like ruining cookies; it’s almost impossible.
As for Fringe having the timeslot disadvantage, I’m sure it’s also a lot cheaper than Terra Nova, especially since they moved production to Canada in season 2.
And, finally, Fringe > Firefly.
COME AT ME, WHEDONITES.
Woah, woah, woah. I am just going to pretend you didn’t say that so we can still be friends.
Yeah. I tend to agree with your posts, Ms. Boots, so I’m just going to turn my head and say “Good day, Sir.”
/Make fun of Whedon all you want – the man deserves it – but you do NOT MESS WITH THE BROWNCOATS.
Do NOT go there, Boots!
i loved firefly. but FRINGE IS TEH GREATEST EVAH
I support Patty’s statement 100%
Fringe > Firefly
Don’t get me wrong, I like Firefly. I just don’t think it’s nearly as great or as genre-defining as people say it is.
Oh, Patty. And you used to be my favorite, too.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.
Patty – I’m with you. I got your back.
This distress was bound to happen to a show with a self-fulfilling title that translates to “Tear A New One.”
But what will I not watch on Monday nights now?
I guess still everything.
This show was bad. I would know I watched all of them.
This gives Terra Nova the advantage over The Walking Dead, in that it won’t continue to drag on while a inexplicably devoted fan-base continues to make excuses for it.
Shoulda been you Terra Nova. Oh, it was. Carry on.
well lets see Firefly sucked donkey balls, look into your hearts you know it to be true.
Secondly Fringe is awesome as all hell, it has a great story and mythology.
Third TerraNova should’ve been called Family Problems, because that’s all it was, bitchy teenagers versus their parents and oh look there’s a dinosaur, it fucking sucked even worse than firefly.
I guess what I’m trying to say is Fringe is the best sci fi show currently on tv.
Firefly wasn’t bad……needed more tits…..
Fringe has been terrible almost all season, and I love it up until Peter disappeared. His return was hinted at every episode he was gone and the single worst executed storyline the show has had. Also, Firefly for life. It isn’t even a competition.
This show was a real dino-SNORE, right guys? Guys?
I’d forgotten all about this show. How’s that other Spielberg show doing? The one with that guy and some stupid other guys and the annoying kids and the alien invasion.
Charlie Bronze…..
…”Falling Skies” will be back in Summer 2012…..
Except for the boring parts (those scenes between the opening and the ending credits), it is a GREAT show because it mentions Boston and Watertown Mass…..
Terra Nova was no “Earth 2″ but it was passable. They really needed to ramp up the “cute girls getting boned” scenes and drop the dinosaurs stuff……
….because everyone knows there were no such thing as dinosaurs….
“except for the boring parts (those scenes between the opening and ending credits)” LOL. I couldn’t agree more. I gave up on it after three episodes. I couldn’t make it through the pilot of “Terra Nova”. Spielberg should stop making tv shows.
Soooo y’all are unaware that Anna Torv is Rupert Murdoch’s niece? Really, I thought that was common knowledge? Fringe is f’ing bullet proof.
Fox is canceling Terra Nova to make way for the television adaption of War Horse.
Oops, adaptation, eff me…
Terra Nova was one of the best shows on TV in quite sometime, anyone who thinks otherwise is probably a reality tv series go boy. This show combined all the great elements of a good tv show (plot, building the characters, graphics, and acting). I watched every episode non stop all the way through after the season finished, and was mad when I found out they canceled it. This show had over 10 Million viewers. I am a syfy lover, I like falling skies, Walking Dead, and Fringe, and I can honestly say it was better than all of them except for Falling Skies, and I would say it was as good as that show. So for all the little cry babies out there that complain about this show, go watch your reality TV. FOX was stupid for canceling this so early on this show had a lot of promise and a huge fan base, and the story line was way better than most shows on TV today. In my opinion even the first Season of the Walking Dead was no where as good of a show as Tera Nova. As for action, it wasn’t an action TV show, it was Scfy with a more strategic plot. The graphics were outstanding. This show deserved a Season 2, and if you think otherwise, then you never watched more than 2 episodes of Tera Nova. If you havent watched this show, I highly recommend it.
This show didn’t fail because it was a bad TV show, it failed because they marketed it to the wrong crowd, most the people on this forum. Had they have planned out their target audience a little better, you wouldn’t see all these negative complaints about this show. This show was by far one of the best TV shows made between 2011-2012. The main reason outside of a bad target audience this show was canceled, was because it was 4 million to produce each episode. It truly is a shame they canned this so early on, it was a great show.
