We’re a TV blog, which means we’re supposed to TV things, particularly when it involves someone on TV saying something epically idiotic. That happened earlier today when Geraldo Rivera, who’s been an American punch line for over 20 years now, thanks to not finding anything in Al Capone’s vault (and being a generally awful person), had the following to say about the recent murder of black teenager Trayvon Martin on “Fox & Friends”: “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.” THAT’S RAYCESS.
It’s sad that the scandal over what Rivera said is likely going to overshadow the tragedy of Martin’s slaying. But today’s a gorgeous Friday, National Puppy Day at that, and I just can’t, nay, WON’T get angry about what that Big Mouth Billy Bass look-alike with the mustache said when the whole Martin case is already sooo frustrating and unfair. So I’ll let Tom Haverford and Patton Oswalt sum up my feelings instead:

Fu*k you, indeed. (Via)

This could use a Snoop Dogg “Fuck Geraldo Rivera”.
That’s just terrible. It’s like saying if you go out in a sequined shirt buttoned halfway up that you deserve to be in the Ice-capades. That is just a disgustingly stereotypical thing to say.
I look good in this shirt, dammit!
This guy’s face couldn’t be any more smug, nor more punchable.
This guy is a cunt with a mustache.
If by cunt you mean slimy thing that dicks go into, I think you are probably correct.
Villain, I say.
Compare the above picture with this: [i44.tinypic.com]
Remember the good old days when his guests would hit him in the face with a chair?
Eh, it’s still not as bad as him calling David Hasselhoff “Mr. Ripple Pecs” on Baywatch.
Somebody throw a chair at this motherfucker.
Let’s relive the glory of that moment.
By that logic, does that mean the girl in the mini skirt really was just asking for it?
Yep, I’m sure Geraldo would say that too.
Bill O’Reilly endorses that logic as well.
Oh most definitely.
So long as having four or five inches of underwear showing is still the death penalty.
It’s time for Geraldo to stop discussing domestic issues and get back to doing what he does best — broadcasting our troops’ locations during wartime.
And Newt Gingrich can go fuck himself with a rusty pitchfork.
Yeah, Obama is the one who made this all about race. Not the guy who called 911 to complain about “a fucking coon” walking around his neighborhood, chased the boy down and murdered him because he was a blackity black black. No, no. Obama made it all about race.
Go fuck yourself, you fat fucking fuck.
That guy sure seems desperate to manufacture some outrage lately. I guess it worked well for him with the whole, “It’s none of your business that I was a contemptible piece of shit to my ex-wife” thing. Good* luck to him trying to find something else that juicy.
* Bad.
The real outrage is that George Zimmerman is Hispanic. That totally screwed up the “evil whitey gunning down a defenseless black kid” story. If the shooter was named Juan Gomez, this story would never have gone national.
I love this argument. He was Hispanic, so it’s not a big deal.
A kid was stalked and gunned down by a nutjob who was upset about “a fucking coon” being in his neighborhood, and the police did nothing. That’s the outrage.
The assailant’s name and race don’t mean a fucking thing, except to people on the right who want to make this fuckup of local law enforcement into another installment of Black People Are The Real Racists.
It’s a tragedy that a kid was killed, so is every death. But an individual Hispanic on black crime does not make a national news story. Other than Zimmerman’s name, there is really nothing unique about this story. You have been caught up in the cycle of fake outrage.
There’s nothing unique about this story? A guy who called 911 virtually every week to complain about people in his neighborhood to the point where local cops knew him as a regular nuisance, who ignored instructions to wait for police and instead followed the kid around his neighborhood — so long that the kid called his girlfriend to say he was scared — and then exited the car, shot and killed the kid, and then when police show up, no charges are filed and the guy is allowed to walk away?
That happens all the time? Seriously?
This is an outrage. Conservative Republicans like Rep. Allen West and Gov. Scott both agree that local law enforcement fucked this up royally. Are they liberals who are over-reacting too?
I’m not caught up in a cycle of fake outrage. I’m legitimately pissed. As people of all races, and all political persuasions are. The fact that you choose to say, “ho hum, Hispanics shoot blacks all the time, nothing to see here with this one, then” is fucking pathetic.
You’re right! The police never fuck up. They thoroughly investigate every possible crime and normally get things right 100% of the time. This is so unique! Thanks for enlightening me.
The outrage is not fake. There are definitely other cases that provoke no outrage (even though they should) simply because they never get reported on, due to race or class issues, but that doesn’t change the fact that this was a reprehensible, racially-motivated crime that’s gone unpunished, which highlights the institutional racism of the police department in question.
If your argument is “It happens all the time, so it’s okay,” you’re committing a logical fallacy.
Clearly, Eddie, there’s no enlightening you. A psycho can stalk an unarmed teenager, kill him in cold blood, and not be arrested, and you’ll sit there making the wanking gesture because you just don’t care.
We get it. You’re an asshole. You can stop underscoring the point.
“The assailant’s name and race don’t mean a fucking thing, except to people on the right”
Add, and the Black Panthers to your list: [articles.orlandosentinel.com]
Seriously? The New Black Panther Party? I mean, I knew you were a hack, but I didn’t think you were reading off the Glenn Beck Mouthbreather Script so faithfully.
Jesus, the only people who give two shits about the “New Black Panthers” are idiots on the right. This group is nothing more than a handful of self-proclaimed leaders with no following, no influence, and no funding. They get a shitload of airtime on the Fox News “Let’s Scare Old White People” shows, for sure, but the only thing they’ve ever done is protest outside a majority-black polling place in 2008 trying to convince black voters to vote against Obama.
Oh, but they had berets! The scary headwear that radicals wear in movies! Oh no!
Just so I know the score — the left has to be accountable to any mental case who can get airtime on Fox, but the right is in no way accountable for the comments of someone like Rush Limbaugh?
I just got around to reading this. Dammit Otto, you should be writing an Eastbound and Down spinoff where Kenny Powers becomes a congressman.
You stated an absolute. I gave a fact that disproves it. Stop being wrong and I’ll stop correcting you.
I’m sorry, pretty princess. I forgot to poll all 150 million of us on the liberal side of things, and I deeply apologize if that inaccuracy hurt your poor feelings.
I’ll ask the clerk to amend the formal transcript of this important debate to read: “No one on the left who matters or who anyone serious listens to gives a shit about the racial angle.”
Will that dry up the tears?
Dammit Otto, you should be writing an Eastbound and Down spinoff where Kenny Powers becomes a congressman.
We’re in production already. The working title is “Bulletproof Congressman,” but we’re also thinking about “Mr. Mofo Goes to Washington.”
My vote’s for Mofo, Otto.
You, sir, have my ringing endorsement.
If there ever was a time for the slowclap.gif, it is for Otto’s responses here.
Totally irrelevant to the discussion at hand, and I have no interest in getting into a political argument, but Aziz Ansari and Geraldo Rivera are equally useless pop culture-wise.
cant we all just get along and watch don draper drink a scotch or 5?
I’m confused as to why most people are throwing the whole innocent before proven guilty thing out the window. Geraldo says dumb things isn’t news. O’reilly says dumb things isn’t news either. Can we please stop it with the fake outrage? Did something terrible happen? Absolutely. Should we put a bounty on Zimmerman’s head before we hear all the facts? Absolutely not.
And stop besmirching hoodies! They’re so comfortable! Geraldo’s in the pocket of Big Snuggie.
I don’t know about a bounty; but I’m pretty sure most people think that what the police should have done in the aftermath is not the following, “Oh, you just shot an unarmed kid, Mr. Zimmerman? Well, despite the long list of of prior issues we’ve had at the police station with you, and the fact that this kid is carrying nothing other than a bag of Skittles, you are clearly in the right and are free to go. We don’t expect to do any kind of follow-up to this whatsoever, please, return to your previous career of vigilantism.”
Let’s take a step back from the specifics, since we don’t have all the details yet. In general, if you are following someone who looks suspicious, and that person turns around and starts beating the shit out of you and you shoot them, is that self defense? In the state of Florida it is. I’m not saying that’s what happened, but what I am saying is that there are many circumstances in which his actions, while terrible, were justified. That doesn’t fit the narrative the media wants to sell us, so we won’t hear about it there.
If Geraldo gets falesly arrested for being a pedophile, his porn-mustache will be just as responsible for his arrest as he is.
Anyone want to take bets on how long it takes for the Media to report Trayvon Martin’s Twitter name or pictures of him that aren’t 5 years old?
