Season two of “Game of Thrones” premieres this coming Sunday, and to drum up some publicity — or just because they love us all dearly and want us to be happy — HBO has released six short clips from the first episode, “The North Remembers.” The clips don’t give too much away, but they should be relevant to the interests of anyone who enjoys things like quality television, graphic violence, Peter Dinklage, things that are great, and hot chicks running around with tiny dragons perched on their shoulder.
Between “Community” coming back two weeks ago, “Mad Men” premiering on Sunday, “Justified” building to an intense end to its season, and “Game of Thrones” coming back in five days, it’s a little like TV Christmas around these parts lately. You know what? I’m gonna go check to see if someone brought back “Terriers” and slipped it under the tree. It’s worth a shot, right?

Big ups to Bobby Big Wheel for the tip

Ser Rodrick Cassel’s beard kicks ass. I wish i had the balls to grow such a wonderful beard.
Why’d you want to grow a beard on your balls?
uhm, Maggie from Walking Dead is in Van Wilder 2, hahaha
Aaaw, baby Drogon (I assume) is adorable.
Not looking forward to Craster, though. He’s one of the creepiest characters in the series, and that’s saying a lot.
It’s hard to come off icky than Cersie and Jaime’s twincest but Craster pulls it off with ease, impressive.
I think this guy can pull off the required creepiness:

Although I’m disappointed the 2nd shift night security guard in my building didn’t at least get a call for the role. I’m pretty sure he lives in a house just like the one in the clip.
@Jamaal
Read the books? There’s ickier coming up
@Sarpedon, Sure have and I think I know who you are referring too. Though I would use Holy fucking ball tits evil to describe him over icky. Don’t worry TV goers, you will meet this wonderful person before season’s end
I’m assuming the character you guys are talking about has the initials RS?
No not RS!!! RB! RBBBBBBB I WILL FLAY YOU ALIVE
OH MY GOD THE WORST. EVER.
I try not to read anything involving that person before bed.
@JCSK, he was RS before he changed his name to RB.
And if you forget that there has been a name change he will make you beg to have your finger cut off
@RS, @Upstate, @Jamaal: Yes, that’s the man I’m talking about. Easily the most villainous character in the series for my money. Makes Joffrey look…slightly less a fuckhead.
I have this sinking feeling that we won’t see the RB, RS, B.o.B. (not the rapper) this season in the incarnation we anticipate. In much…geekier forums…they have noted that there was no casting announcement for him, so his role in the events may be pushed back to Season 3. That being said, I don’t subscribe to that particularly theory and it may just be a well kept secret (Hell, they kept Ned’s fate secret).
I’m hoping that Season 2 really encompasses all of Clash of Kings – especially since RS/RB role ties heavily into some major happenings later on in the book. We shall see!
Those Tyrion clips made me literally giddy with excitement! Imp fans be warned, Tyrion is so epic in book two that the sheer power of Dinkledge’s performance may kill you, watch with cation.
Don’t you tell me how to watch. I shall watch with anion.
Robb Stark is a GD badass
You misspelled Arya.
@Taco you misspelled Jaqen H’ghar
it’s fucking hard to spell, you’re forgiven
+1 Jaqen… Sarpedon, have you read all of the books?
I’m disappointed there were no clips featuring Arya or Davos.
If you haven’t watched the Season 2 character featurettes, it’s got a cool thing on Davos. Check winter-is-coming.net
I’ll check it out, Davos is easily my favorite new character from A Clash of Kings.
Yeah, he is fantastic in it. If you haven’t read all of the series yet I encourage you too. I thought I was going to wait until season 2 finished to read book 2? False – read the entire series last summer after S1 ended.
I’ve read the all the books. I did the same thing you did. Started reading the books after season 1 and didn’t stop until I finished A Dance with Dragons.
I did the same exact thing. As did two of my buddies
I’m in the middle of book four, and it’s the first time I’ve hit a proverbial speed bump. As for the favorite new character: it’s gotta be Brienne. She’s such a bad ass, and I sometimes found Davos’s internal monologue to be a little tiring. He’ll be much better as a TV character, I think.
Related to Brienne: do you think they chose the right actress for the part? I feel bad for that poor woman. Brienne’s so hideous (then again, so is Tryion).
Josh, Brienne is bad ass and very loyal, much like Davos. I think they got the right girl for the part because the actress playing Brienne is 6′ 3”. Make-up will ugly her up for the role. Plus, anyone who read the books know that Tyrion is way uglier than portrayed in the series.
The two Tyrion clips highlight what may be lost through the television realisation of the books and what can be gained. Some delightful Tommen and Hound bits in the chapter where the first Tyrion scene takes place look omitted because of the subtle location change but the look that Tyrion gives Littlefinger in the second clip is a masterclass in understatement. Time to put down the books and revel in the show.
I can’t wait to see what Tyrion looks like later on…without spoiling anything.
@upstate I think Storm of Swords was my favorite book in the series and I’ll be excited to see how the show blends elements from it and Season 2 in the upcoming season. I think for readers, we can expect to be pleasantly surprised despite our awareness of the book’s events because the showrunners have said they will both be blending books (especially makes sense in 4 and 5) as well as showing events that were “off screen” in the novels.
@JoshK on Book 4 – Brienne was great. I have to say that the Ironborn were my favorite part of that book though. I won’t say names, but Johnny Depp for E.G. anybody?
/dismissive wanking motion
/farts
Kidding. I can’t wait to see who they cast though.
Josh – Stay strong, Book 4 is the doldrums but things pick up in Book 5, especially toward the end. The books are like the Die Hards, 3 was the best, 1 was a classic, 2 has its merits as well, 4 wasn’t that great but still better than most of what’s out there.
@ Bobby B. I like the Die Hard comparison/grading. I’d also rate them analogous to the Sean Connery James Bond movies. Book 3 is definitely the Goldfinger of the series.
I can’t wait to talk about this show with you all on Monday.
still haven’t been able to get through book 5. I put it down weeks ago and every time I pick it up I can’t remember what was happening and have to backtrack.
Someone please tell me book 5 picks up a little after the half-way mark. Hopefully the season 2 premier will motivate me to dive back in.
Nothing I have ever read has topped Book 3. Well maybe Stirling Archer’s how to book on spying, maybe
@Chazz – Book 5 gets better. The Last half of it is good
@Jamaal – Agreed about Storm of Swords. One of the best books I’ve ever read
My ranking of the books is probably slightly different in than the Die Hard analogy, but that’s just me: 3, 2, 1, 5, 4
Although really for me, 1 might be better than 2 and the difference between 2 and 5 is probably negligible. Clash of Kings is clearly a book setting up for something climactic (SoS). Book 5 is clearly setting up for climactic conflict in Books 6 and 7 (hopefully).
Not seeing all the Davos love on here. It finally got to the point where wanted to start skipping his chapters in the book. He was my least favorite character and it wasn’t even close.
Book 5 REALLY picks up at the end. Lots of important stuff happens…
FWIW I did the same thing with the books, went through the whole series after watching S1 last fall. I also read them again and highly encourage anyone with the inclination to do so — I would say that going through them again was easily about 75% as enlightening/revealing as the first read through (and arguably more fun). You pick up on SO much more. So much that happens — even in the first book — ends up being an OH! OH! OH! moment in a later book.
Stick through Book 4. It’s short (relatively speaking) and for my money the last scene of Book 4 (in the Eyrie) might be the best reveal in the entire series, both in terms of how it unfolds (really expert pacing/execution) and sheer revelatory impact.
GodDAMN I love these boosk (and the show is all you could hope for and more). I could talk about them all day.
Also, not to be a snob, but if you’re reading the books, PLEASE don’t skip chapters. It makes me sad. Lots of good/important general story info unrelated to the POV character gets revealed in their chapters.
Tyrion is the star in these clips, much like in the show
I think it’s fair to say he’s going to have that Emmy on lockdown for the next five years.
Chazz, Dinklage is awesome, but Cranston is still the one who knocks.
When I first saw this post, I thought the headline was “SEX CLIPS FROM THE ‘GAME OF THRONES’ SEASON TWO PREMIERE…”
But, you know, six clips is good too.
I don’t know; I’m pretty disappointed that was not the case.
/is the breast feeding scene considered “sex”? …. didn’t think so, sorry.
*dons pickelhaube*
@ Danger. Coincidentally I watched the lion’s share of Terriers episodes over Christmas because of the veneration for it here, amongst other sites. It nagged at me that I was missing something because whilst it was likeable but I couldn’t see any magic or anything that would mark it as extraordinary.
I WANT A BABY DRAGON!
gah, why can’t it just be sunday already?
To bridge the gap just refer to some independently acting body part as your “baby dragon”.
Needs more Bran and Hodor! Hodor!
Needs more Lannister bro/sis f*ing
The Tyrion clips were the best. I’m so happy it’s coming back.
Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal!
