Inspired by a character in “Smash,” presumably, EW has curated a slide show presenting the 20 Most Annoying TV Characters Ever. In addition to the numerous omissions, it’s the “ever” that I have the biggest problem with. What? 100 years of television and the most annoying character they can come up with is Lutz from “30 Rock”? What about Barney’s dopey girlfriend in “The Andy Griffith Show” or Chrissy’s cousin in “Three’s Company” or, hell, WHERE IS KATE FROM “LOST”?
If you leave off the “ever,” then people understand that you’re really only talking about contemporary TV shows because contemporary TV shows are all that anyone really cares about. But, the “ever” suggests that the writer of the post has never seen a television show that aired before 1999 (except “Welcome Back Kotter.”)
It’s also an annoying list for all that was left out. I thought I’d pass along the annoyance. You can view the entire slideshow over on EW if you want images, but here is a list of those characters.

How did the entire cast of “Friends” not make that list?
I could ask the same thing about Glee.
How about any character from any show that no matter how much they screw up, the cast begrudgingly accepts them for their faults, (i.e. Gilligan, ALF, Lucy…)

Considering EW offers the most bland ‘analysis’ possible, I’m going to ignore any time they try to speak ill of anyone, fictional or otherwise.

Do the people at EW not watch TV? Sure that Smash character makes me want to punch everything, but Lutz is great. And can you really count Nikki and Paulo if they were only in one episode? I watched Lost from day 1 to the finale and I forgot they were even a thing.
They were in more than 1 episode. One of them snuck into the bathroom while the other guys watched a video, or something like that.

I think there’s a difference between “annoying” and reprehensible. Karen is supposed to be reprehensible, so it kind of works.
Every time I scan the new comments “Manny from Modern Family” makes me think someone posted someone from Mama’s Family. And I think we can all agree that if Mama’s Family had one annoying character above all others…..it was Tyler Perry as “viewer”.
I’m alright with Creed. I’d watch a spin-off show about him. But a spin-off with Dwight and his GD beet farm? Not so much. Unless they develop Mo a little more but that’s pushing it.

Lutz is supposed to be an unappealing character. That’s the point. He is the worst, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I would disagree with Janice from Friends being on the list. The character was designed to be annoying. I will excuse purposefully annoying characters from a “most annoying character” list exactly because they were designed to be that way. I tend to think of lists like this as actually meaning “most annoying characters who weren’t designed to be annoying.”

I’m not a TV character, so that nomination doesn’t make much sense.
To be fair, it wasn’t Dawn herself that was annoying but rather the ridiculousness of that whole storyline and the way it was so transparently shoved in so that they wouldn’t lose the teen audience.
The name that jumped out for me was Sam McKinney from “Diff’rent Strokes.”
It seemed like a run-of-the-mill Cousin Oliver Scenario, where they realized Arnold had gotten too old to be cute anymore, and they needed a little kid to awwwww it up. If I remember correctly, he was prone to singing cornpone country songs.
