Wynn Duffy … not a fan of Harlan Roulette.

You can expect to see this GIF in the comments section. A LOT.

This one is via Bohemea. Watch your back, Chet.

There’s always money in the banana stand pig carcasses.

Puppy love.

WHOA.

DOUBLE WHOA.

I’ll miss this show so damn much.

I love this show! I want to know what happened to the teaser scene of Rayland and Boyd walking down the alley shooting away…I thought I went through all the posts on this site. Did I miss the post or an episode?
1. I know this is producer stuff, but don’t change the opening theme song or montage. X-Files lasted for 190+ episodes with exactly the same opening. It’s the badge of consistency. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. (X-Files changed the music slightly and the montage at the end, when they were losing it, then went off the air.)
2. We’ve rented the Season 1 DVD set and the Season 2 Blu-ray and thoroughly enjoy the commentaries and “Making Of…” features.
On future Blu-rays, please include a technical commentary and/or featurette. I’d like to know how you get the picture — what kinds of cameras, lighting methods, audio (heck, include mic models, mixers and recorders, for that matter) and other technical methods you use to get such excellent quality. Looks like some kind of Sony digital camera. F23? Can’t tell. Pull back to show how the set is lit. How many lights are employed? What type?
All I’ve seen so far is one featurette on Set Design at Disney Ranch. It was good. More, please.
I’m way late to this party, but I’m wondering if, after it was revealed that Arlo shot the trooper, anyone recalled this line from Arlo to Raylan in season one.
Arlo: All the shit I pulled over the years, I never shot anyone. Not a one.
A little late to the discussion, but I’d like to know how much input, or research do you have with Kentucky, legal procedure, and law enforcement? I had family in law enforcement in Kentucky, and had a case against the Dixie Mafia.
How much truth is in the fiction?
A lot of the small town corruption stuff is pretty accurate. There are 120 counties in Kentucky, at least twice as many as necessary, and the primary purpose of having so many counties was graft. Each little fiefdom got its own county government complete with elected officials and crooked political machines. I had a Kentucky Politics class in undergrad taught by Dr. James C. Klotter, who is the foremost authority of the history of the Commonwealth, and it was completely fascinating. Four former governors spoke to the class and they would discuss how elections were rigged back in the day and things of that nature like you’d discuss what you had for breakfast. Dr. Klotter also had a whole damned section of his Kentucky History class devoted to feuds.
I read an interview that Graham Yost did with Alan Sepinwall this week and he stated that he hoped to do six seasons of Justified. This pleases me. I’d like to see them explore some of the other villains next year; Theo, Duffy, Johnny Crowder and Limehouse while Boyd lurks on the fringes and builds his criminal empire. Think it would be a great way to stretch his character all the way through the final season. Basically let next season serve to ‘eliminate the competition’ in Harlan so Boyd can take over then spend season five building a case against Boyd. I think it would be pretty bad ass if season six were about Boyd as a fugitive and Raylan pursuing him since that is the primary purpose of the Marshall services anyway, pursuing fugitives. That would give us two seasons of full on Boyd v. Raylan. I’d definitely like to see Ava come full circle and sacrifice her own life to save Boyd at some point (maybe even with Raylan pulling the trigger) after she was introduced as having killed Bowman Crowder to protect herself. Kinda neat little symmetry there. A final season where the primary story arc was Raylan pursing Boyd would be the perfect way to send the show off IMO.
Oh my god, I just watched it last night. There were so many bad guys this season that I had no idea how they were going to wrap it all up. Fantastic! I’m going to miss Duffy and Quarles – great acting. And the Arlo storyline was profound story telling. It’s rare that I can say this about any series, but the writing is so excellent that I have yet to see an episode that disappoints.Great job. And since I’m assuming almost all the bad guys went to jail, I guess we’ll be back to focusing on just the Crowder family next season? I guess the writers would have to kill me if they told me.
You mean you’ll miss Duffy until next season, right? They got nothing on him. Confession under coercion doesn’t work very well on court as far as I know.
If he can prove it, but of course he can because Raylan can’t lie with that mouth of his. You’re right.
I also have to say, I really wanted to see the Raylan/Quarles draw down. Perhaps they scuffle, make it to their feet and the rig jams but Raylan plugs Quarles anyway.
I get that it was too obvious. A small consolation was Raylan being completely unimpressed with the sleeve gun. “That’s cute.”
I finally got to see it last night. I hate being a day behind on this stuff.
That move with Raylan holding the arm away had me rolling. My dog was looking at me funny as I laughed my butt off. (He watches too, but only to spot dogs and horses so he can rush the TV).
That was great, I laughed hysterically at that.
By far my favorite scene in this episode (and that’s saying something) was Raylan and Wynn’s at the beginning. Seeing Duffy’s reaction to Raylan losing his shit was fantastic. The chemistry between those two is one of the many things that make this show so great. Jere Burns deserves more work. He’s consistently good whether he’s playing a bad guy, a bad guy, or very rarely, a guy who is bad because he killed his son by accident but is trying to be a better person anyway.
Great finale, I like the ongoing theme in the finales of Raylan not shooting the big bad of the season i guess the writers are saving that for when Raylan puts another bullet in Boyd. Also I really want a gif of Raylan calling the sleeve gun cute, those moments are what make this series so great.
I really loved seeing Wynn Duffy lose his cool in this episode. We saw him start to lose it in season one and get pissed off. But he is usually so cool and dismissive. And the fact that he takes such umbrage at “a cop” pulling the trigger to get him to talk.
VJ do you have a favorite moment or scene that you were really happy to see make it in?
Verified
That’s a tough one. Have to say Quarles’ final monologue in 310, when he’s naked.
I’m a bit late and the writers may not come back and see this, but I wanted to thank you for one of the best seasons of television I’ve seen in years. As great as the second season was, the third season was even better and I’m anxious to see how you top yourselves next time. I even got my 62 year old mother to start watching and she loves the show as much as I do. I don’t have a question, I just wanted to show my gratitude.
Verified
thanks man!
Just watched it again. Am I supposed to know who the guy with Boyd was on the bridge at the beginning? Last night, I immediately thought he was a classic TV “red shirt.” Then I forgot about him because the episode was awesome.
I think it was the same guy that was with the prostitues when Quarles escaped
Verified
yes same guy, I can’t remember his name of the top of my head.
For some reason I thought Boyd was testing the guy, and that’s the reason he left Quarles guarded with the 2 addict call-girls and such a long chain.
Yes, that was dumb (sorry to spoil the mutual blowjob-fest going on right now). Boyd goes back to the bar to brag about how he is bring in $100k for the gang, yet leaves his Golden Goose to be guarded by two whores and a stupid-as-shit MF we hadn’t even seen until this scene, his big assignment. FAIL, doesn’t ring true, big fuckup as I see it. Just trying to make the story plausible so you can have the big arm-chopping finale. LAME.
His name is Jimmy, and I’m pretty sure he had airtime before. He’s is with Boyd when he pays a visit to Sheriff Napier, after Quarles killed the drug-dealers.
CC, that really doesn’t address my question:
If Boyd was so happy & proud of his “catch”, why leave the big bag-o-money Quarles represented to a bunch of buffoons, unless they (writers) wanted him to escape, and, while I’m on a roll, does this Psycho Quarles realy leave all three (3) tied together in a sitcom-like situation instead of brainin g each of them?
NO, bad writing, inconsistent, I’m calling BULLSHIT!
Yeah, I know I didn’t address the whole post. I was watching something and was hoping VJ was still around or something.
Personally, I just chalk it up to the fact that Boyd is smart, but not exactly a genius. He done goofed, even after Duffy warned him. He also messed up when he decided to bury Devil.
About the Psycho Quarles thing, maybe he liked the girls. Thanks to them he got his fix, got free and got some free pills for a later fix too.
@Flatulencio
so basically your point is at the end of the day Justified is still a scripted tv show? that while being exceptional still has flaws and isnt completey realistic because you know it’s a tv show? congratulations?
Verified
Yeah that annoyed a lot of people. Boyd was behaving arrogantly and clearly didn’t have enough respect for Quarles. Have to admit I don’t recall what other options we tossed around, there, but I do see your point.
Neal McDonough said in an interview that he improvised the hallelujah scene from one of the episodes (Can’t remember which one right now). Is a lot of great scenes like that improvised? BTW: If Neil does not get nominated for an Emmy for this season, i will lose all faith in humanity. He has been excellent this whole season. It’s definitely his best acting job to date.
Verified
We don’t do table reads, so yes we rewrite or improvise a lot right there on set after we see how the scene goes as written.
Hallelujah?
you mean the “Give me an Amen. Give me a GODDAMN AMEN!” from the episode Devil is killed?
Yes, the amen scene. I blame my goldfish memory.
As great as Jere Burns was in the Harlan roulette scene, I gotta hand it to Tim Olyphant on that one. The moment when you could tell that he wasn’t fucking around anymore was what really made me go, “Holy shit”.
Whoa can we still ask questions? I thought this was closed…is Jacob Pitts’ character going to get some decent air time next season? I’ve always thought he was awesome, with a contemporary background from what we’ve seen. The scene where he shot that guy in the head during the attempted redneck abortion was incredible. “Think you can hit me from that far away?” “No but he can.” *BANG*
Verified
We love Tim Gutterson, too, it’s just tough because we have so many characters, and in the end it’s about Raylan. Hopefully we can serve your Guttersonlust next season.
I completely understand. All the characters are awesome and I really just wanted to get a question in because it’s an amazing opportunity and I always miss the Q&A’s here. Hats off to the writers.
I have major Guttersonlust. Esp at the beginning of this episode where he was all grimy, phwoar.
Has Limehouse’s entire butchering thing all been for the sole purpose of that “piggy bank” gag? ‘Cuz that was pretty goddamn brilliant.
Verified
No, that wasn’t planned, he was just butchering all the time because that’s what he does. Imagine how excessive all that butchering will seem to those watching the eps one after the other on DVD!
Great group of commenters, you guys. Nary an asshole claiming “I knew it was Arlo!!!” Because anyone that claims they did is a lying sack of shit. Seriously though, I did NOT see that coming.
Awards season should shine brightly on this cast and crew. As well written and acted as Limehouse was, I really feel like Quarles was above and beyond anything we could’ve expected. Especially after Mags. His character was mind-blowingly complex and nuanced. I’m looking forward to what new characters will be there to meet us next season.
I did think it was Arlo. He was the only player missing at that particular time. Sorry(not really).
I’m rewatching the episode now, and I have to respect the fact that cronies behind Limehouse actually hold their guns in a firing position instead of just cocking it (tee hee) near their hips/chest then most likely firing wildly into the night.
Awesome season, and unlike other shows I have no doubt that the next will be excellent as well. One of my thoughts regarding the show is that Ava has to die. Her character is very sympathetic, following the archetype of many gangster’s molls. So far she’s gotten away with making moral choices despite being a criminal. No way that can last. I also feel that Raylan’s character has a lot of room for development, despite the common line about him.
It does, however, seem that her morality is beginning to become a bit flexible.
Agreed on both points. The most obvious death for Ava at this point, would be at the hands of Johnny. It would also likely further unhinge Boyd.
So, now that the season is over, when are we gonna see The Dickie and Dewey Double Whammy sitcom?
The episode was amazingly good. The one thing I dont get though is letting the mom out. Why would Quarels do that? She would and did ruin his cover with his hostages.
Are you asking why Quarels would prefer the company on young boys?
No I know why he would prefer the young boys. My question is why he would cut a hostage loose in that situation. Seems like a huge loose end.
*OF, though that other preposition was kinda implied. *shivers*

This is pretty deep planning on Q’s part, but he WANTED her to call the police and tell them what she heard him saying on the phone – that he was going home. This gets law enforcement out of Harlan and on the road to Detroit, when in fact his plan was to go into Nobles Holler.
Ah, that explains it.
I was wondering why he didn’t plug the mom when she got out of the van. Makes sense.
Excellent season. I especially liked the recurring theme of father-son relationships and how they impact who you become (not just the overarching Raylan-Arlo story, but Boyd’s take on criminal enterprise compared to Bo’s, and of course Quarles’ drug addicted dad’s effect on Quarles), and it sets up nicely to further develop Raylan’s character with a baby on the way and the various difficulties lying ahead of him (not the least of which is Winona has already distanced herself and their future child from Raylan).
Two questions:
(1) Is it true Winona will only be limited to around 3 episodes next season? The Winona-Raylan chemistry is always great, and Natalie Zea is always a welcome sight.
(2) What’s the deal with Charlie and the evidence locker room cash? Did that storyline end in “When the Guns Come Out” with Charlie cruising around Mexico trying to protect his cash, or will this storyline reemerge at some point?
Verified
Graham has said she’ll only be in 3 next season, yes.
That storyline is over until we decide it isn’t.
Yayyyyyyy no more Winona forever!! Down with Winona!
Why the hell didn’t Quarles kill the religious mom/Shawn Ryan’s wife? She deserved some TV death for being absolutely awful as Vic Mackey’s wife.
So do you guys hate bodyguards or something? The ones this season seemed useless.
I don’t think anyone has yet saluted Limehouse’s line “Marshall, you are one strange piece of chicken.” That is going into my box of ready-made comments/insults.
I have to say, even with all the amazing scenes and lines and plot, my favorite scene of all last night was after Art told Raylen to go back to the office and do paperwork. When Raylen was standing in the parking lot with his head down and the cruisers rushing past him. I’m actually surprised that didn’t make the .gifs for this episode.
Although I enjoyed this scene, I also felt it was the most transparent. It needed to happen for Raylan to be able to do what Raylan does best; stir shit up by himself.
I liked the squeaky noise Quarles was making as he was dying. Congratulations on a magnificent show. Can we have more Tim next year and I was surprised we didn’t see more of Marshall Karen; I thought she was going to be a big feature this year.
I appreciate the Marshall badge, Uproxx. Most welcome.
Good ending but a few too many bad guys still alive for my taste. The whole “I’m gonna want that back, what about this one, nah you keep that one” part with raylans guns was absolutely genius, whoever wrote that gets two gold stars and a piece of candy.
I would like to say that everything about this season was excellent. Neal McDonough’s performance in this episode was superb. I loved that Quarles was completely on the edge, yet was still able to be extremely cunning and hilarious. My question is a simple one. After what transpired at the end of this season, what motivation does Rayland have to stay in Kentucky? He has been spurned by the people he has come to care for and the people that cared for him are dead. Why doesn’t he just take up the offer his former chief gave him in season 2 and return to Miami?
The baby.
To be honest, I really don’t see Raylan as being that kind of a father. I feel like he’s trying to be that way right now due to the fact that Arlo was a total shitbag to him and he doesn’t want that to happen to his child, but deep down he can’t be that way. Furthermore, he’s going to be the father of a baby who’s mother wants nothing to do with him.
Good point. But on the other hand, the whole crux of the show is how the core characters react to each other and evolve. As you point out below, Raylan as a father is a plot line ripe for development, and he may see the child as his last chance to have a family and develop that family in a righteous way in order to right the perceived wrongs of his upbringing.
As a parent, having a kid changes you in ways you can’t imagine and you react in ways that you never thought you would. And I am sure our bad-ass marshall will do unexpected things as parent we wouldn’t expect. Plus, jubbs or VJ (I can’t remember which) mentioned he had kids, so there is a lot of experience there to bring to the fold. Also, you know th kid has to be a boy, right?
1. Best open of the year. Wynn needs his own show.
2. Long way to go for a piggy bank joke, & what’s the shelf life of one of those banks?
3. I wonder if Arkin will feel deprived of the 500k that Raylan “intercepted”.
4. Congrats to Raylan on not being shot.
Great show.
–hugz–
hugz!
Great season. One questions, though. As heavily armed and secured Noble’s is, how did Quarles, Rayland, Mitch and Pete drive right in and sneak up on Limehouse in the slaughter house without any warning?
good question.
Verified
There was a series of scenes cut from the episode (perhaps not even shot, but they were in the script) in which Raylan demands entrance into Nobles based on his badge, while Q hides in the back seat. This is why Q kidnapped him – law enforcement was the only way he’d get to Limehouse. Also, Nobles wasn’t on AS high alert now that Q was in their minds taken care of and Boyd was under arrest as well.
the one thing i guess im kind of disappointed in, i was hoping once again for Raylan and Boyd to have to kind of work more together again like they ended up doing against the Miami mafia at the end of season 1 and against the Bennetts (im trying to remember specifics here, but Boyd did save Raylan from Dickee at the least).
i figured the same would happen this season. I guess i thought the painting of Raylan as a bad guy would be a larger story and Boyd being harrassed would drive them both into working with one another to get rid of Quarles and maybe even Limehouse.
I hope Boyd isnt the big villian next season, I like Boyd more as a guy who’s always there in the thick of things playing a part in Raylan’s quests, not as the central bad guy, someone that Raylan at times has to begrudgingly need help or information from, or the one who always gets away.
The Boyd-Raylan showdown if one happens i would hope would be saved for a planned last season. Otherwise I like it better when Boyd and Raylan have to work together against a common enemy.
Yeah. I know it was only filmed for marketing purposes, but the season 3 teaser of Raylan and Boyd popping off in an alley, shoulder to shoulder, was awesome. Wish it’d been in the season proper.
I wanted the Shotgun blasting Boyd/Raylan promo to be real!!!
i almost feel like they have to make that scene happen now, haha.
Here is my question I need answered. My bestie and I were having a discussion about Boyd (whom I love BTW). I am saying he is a man of honor although his career may be of a questionable nature. She says he is a weaseling murderer who faked his religion. I don’t believe this to be the case I feel like Boyd is a more complex character than that to just fake a walk in faith, I feel like he thought he could be that man but when society keeps telling you are the opposite of what you are trying to be you eventually just give up and say “I guess that is what I am meant to be” So who is right in this dispute?
i think boyd was faking in the name of furthering his own power grab agenda. however i dont think he is a weasel. Dickee is a weasel. Boyd is a calculating somewhat evil mastermind. As Erol put it he’s a man of a particular skill set.
I kind of preferred the Boyd hunting Raylan one myself.
Verified
As Graham said in his interview on The Treatment a couple of weeks ago, Boyd fully believes in whatever he’s doing at the time. Whether he’s a criminal or a preacher, he believes in that thing. At his core he is an inspirational leader of men. A community organizer, if you will. He is not content to live a quiet life in the shadows, though he tried it for a while at the start of season 2.
Was the part where Quarles tries to grab his arm from Raylan after Limehouse cuts it off in the script or just something Neal did on his own? Regardless it was awesome/hilarious to watch.
Verified
someone else asked that too. I don’t know but I will ask
That was a great scene. I laugh hysterically at it. Quarles’ expression is, “Would you be so kind as to give me back my arm.”
Raylan’s is, “Fuck you, you don’t get your arm back.”
Thanks for the excellent season. Any chance Adam Arkin will be back in Season 4. And more Jim Beaver please… I am digging him in the role of Shelby,
Verified
There’s a chance for both.
First off love the show. The writing and acting is absolutely fantastic. Couple of questions:
1. Why didn’t Johnny let Devil kill Boyd earlier in the season? In the finale it sounded like Johnny was in cahoots with Limehouse for a long time…possibly before that happened.
2. I think I remember one of you guys (writers, possibly Jon) saying that the ice pick guy wasn’t necessarily dead. Are there any plans on including him next season?
3. Are there any parts of the show that are especially fun to write, like Wynn Duffie dialog or conversations between Raylan and Boyd or Art?
i dont think Johnny wanted Boyd dead, he’s still his brother, but he did want Boyd in jail, something Limehouse was capable of scheming up and someone Johnny had hoped he could trust to do so discreetly.
Verified
Devil’s offer wasn’t a good one. Johnny was biding his time, feeding information to Limehouse in exchange for something, or in exchange for future favors. He wants Boyd’s empire and his girl, sure, but he may not want Boyd dead, or in prison, at least not yet.
We haven’t made any plans one way or the other for Fletcher the Ice Pick Nix.
Yes, Wynn is fun, and Boyd is fun. Honestly, all the main characters are fun. Writing the guest characters isn’t always fun because it’s tough to get a handle on a character who’s only going to appear in that one episode.
I just gotta say thank you for such an awesome show.
also- are there plans to bring Limehouse in as a recurring character for next season? It seems that Boyd, Ava and Limehouse are the only ones who avoided the pokey.
Verified
I have to drop out for a while, but hopefully Jon will show up, soon. He’s unpredictable because he’s a renaissance man, by which I mean he may have traveled back in time to the renaissance and is currently doing battle alongside a cyborg Michelangelo in an epic quest to return to our time in order to answer your questions.
So keep the questions coming. I’ll be back this evening even if Jon is still trapped in the past.
wait are these Season 4 spoilers?
C’mon people Boyd is giving us good stuff here. A little recognition please.
Has he only done that once before? Was his safety guaranteed?
What is the correct pronunciation of Jere Burns’s first name, just in case I ever run into him and want to congratulate him on that awesome Harlan Roulette scene?
Verified
Pronounced just like Jerry.
Other best part of this season? FLETCHER NIX IS STILL ALIVE YA’LL.
Is it true that you guys want Eric Stonestreet as a villain in the next season? Or is it just a crazy internet rumor? That could be interesting.
Verified
I saw that, I know Graham likes him but that’s above my pay grade.
Hah! That would be awesome.
This show nails finale lines of the season.
Season 1′s “No Raylan, I’m betting my life on the fact that you’re the only friend I have left in this world”
And now Season 3′s “He just saw a man in a hat pointing a gun at Boyd”
I can’t recall Season 2′s right now, but only because that song that plays over Mag’s death was so perfect.
Verified
“It was already in the glass”
Verified
“I get to see the mystery…”
I missed the song You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive. Why was it not at the end of this season?
Verified
Just trying to do something different, not be predictable. who knows when or if it will pop up again!
I had to find it on youtube and listen to it after the episode myself. I don’t usually listen to that type of music, but i really like that song now.
Season 1 worked because it was more like a set-up / damning of Raylan since the season was about his homecoming. In season 2 it fit because of the coal mining and how Mags as hard as she tried to get the money to leave she couldn’t do so alive. Season 3 it just would have felt out of place… and not just because it didn’t end in Harlan County, but because the last scene wasn’t about death, but that Arlo was willing to kill his own son to save Boyd and that bomb shell almost warrants a fade to black with no music just to make that point hit harder.
Well, the season ended in Louisville this year and not Harlan. Wouldn’t have made sense to play that song as Raylan’s walking out of a suburban home in Louisville, Kentucky.
Oh please please please use it again! Use it every season!
Any advice for aspiring screenwriters?
Could you dicuss how you got into the field a little bit?
Love Justified! Thank you!

Whole books are written on that subject, but to be brief:
- TV is different than movies, in that there’s kind of a career path. You can be an assistant, like I was, for a while, and then eventually sometimes someone shows mercy on you and promotes you.
- Advice would be make sure you’re writing far more than you’re reading books about writing and how to break in, etc. You need to write, be willing to take notes (even tough ones) from people who are better writers than you, and always be getting better. Have a ton of samples for when you get your shot.
Oh, and you need to move to LA. I don’t care what anyone says.
Hey guys, I need some help:
Due to a Comcast “error” or “general suckitude”, my cablebox went out for the entire scene between Ava and Ellen May. Basically I saw Ava walk in, then blackness, then Ellen May with bloody face and Ava walk out. Could somebody fill me in with what happened?
Thanks!
Also, holy shit! Great rest of the episode!
Can’t wait to see the Bartender next season!
She yelled at Ellen May about talking to Dickie. “Dickie shot me you stupid bitch” Then she slapped her. Yelled at her some more asked her what she told anyone about Devil. Then punched her in the face.
Immediately prior to the punch, Ellen May vaguely threatened Ava with what EM could tell people about her. Presumably, that Ava killed Delroy. I saw the punch being more a response to Ellen May’s ungrateful bitchiness re: that than it was about her talking to Dickie.
Thanks!
Any ideas on where the Boyd/Raylan relationship is headed? It seems they’ve transitioned from an uneasy alliance,(shown in this season’s teasers with them shooting together down an alleyway which never came to be, even metaphorically) to a point where Raylan at least tolerated Boyd, even as Boyd continually stepped on Raylan’s toes. How do Arlo’s actions affect the two going forward? Is this a declaration of all out rivalry or is it something that could connect them?
Verified
Any or all of these things could occur. Afraid i can’t be more detailed in our thoughts without giving things away.
Can’t wait to watch the episode again because I know there were some sneaky hilarious moments that haven’t yet been mentioned on here. I just forget what they were because it was so badass.
Why does Duffy live in a trailer ?

Because he’s eccentric
