In the Great Uproxx Sunday Night Television Compromise of 2012, we here at Warming Glow were able to claim the discussion/GIF posts for “Game of Thrones,” while our colleagues at the Uproxx mothership were awarded the same related to “Mad Men.” For the most part, we have been pleased with this outcome. For all the slow-burning intensity and deep character study on “Mad Men,” there’s just something about gratuitous nudity and GIFs of insufferable child monarchs getting slapped in the face that really does it for us. We are simple people with simple desires.
BUT, every now and then, “Mad Men” goes all holy crap on us, and it feels like the type of thing we would be irresponsible to not mention here. Last night was one of those nights, for two important reasons (screencapped and GIFed by the inimitable @bubbaprog): First of all, Don’s jacket (see above). It is so loud and disorienting that I imagine people assume a helicopter is hovering nearby whenever he enters a room. I must have it at once. Second, the GIF posted below, which is “Mad Men’s” own “Joffrey getting slapped” moment. It was a long time coming, and it was delicious. I recommend you watch it for 10-15 minutes straight, then head over to the main page for their discussion thread and talk about how great it is.

I don’t doubt Mad Men has developed into one of the best shows on TV, but I gave up after the first 7 or 8 episodes during the first season and that banner picture reminds me why I quit on it. The whole “LOL IT’S THE 1950′S YOU GUYS, GET IT?” schtick was a bit heavy-handed for me. I felt like the first season in particular relied waaaay too much on this angle and after the first few episodes it became annoying for me.
Like I said, I’m sure the show deserves all the praise it gets, but that banner image just gave me flashbacks as to why I couldn’t finish season 1 in the first place.

//It’s cool guys, I like Archer though!
It’s the 1960s and saying that you don’t watch a show set in the 1960s because it looks too 1960s for you is kind of weird. Like idk, should they pretend that the fashion, attitudes and styles didn’t exist so you don’t feel bothered by its presence?
That’s not the point I was making at all. I just think they were too up front about the fact that it’s a period piece. We get it bros, times were different then. You could smoke in your office and fondle your secretary. I just think they relied too heavily on this as a crutch when the show began.
I agree that they kind of did when it started. I rewatched the series over the winter, and there were long, lingering shots of cigarettes, and they were being very heavy-handed with a lot of stuff. They toned that down a lot for the sake of character and plot, which is why the show is amazing now. It was amazing then too, but it’s matured a lot.
This is comparable to me seeing my friends watching an episode of Lost, catching 15 seconds of it, saying “I watched the first two episodes! And it still doesn’t make sense to me!” and leaving the room.
If anything, I think the show has been great about underplaying the “periodness” of the period piece. Other shows would have been obnoxious about it – “see look at how black people were treated back then!” “hey, that girl is listening to the Beatles, who were popular at the time!”
Mad Men has been very subtle about it – which has generated some backlash because of how they’ve been oblivious to the civil rights movement, which is silly, because the civil rights movement was being fought by young people, not mainstream upper class Northern white men who were pretty oblivious to it.
I agree ^^
It got a bit better later on, but it’s such a slow-paced show, it’s hard to care about it on a regular basis.
No worries, guys. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Their own stupid, wrong opinion.
Seriously, no need to apologize. If you’re happy denying yourself one of the true pleasures in life, please, be my guest.
When we have a party, you can sit in the corner and talk with the guy who refuses to eat processed food.
Geez, spoilers much? Keep the Gif off the main page.
Thank you
You are welcome, but I don’t think you realize how close I am to going on an insane rant about people not watching a culturally noteworthy and widely discussed television show, then using their free will to open a television blog the next day and getting all pissy about spoilers as though it’s my goddamn fault you did all that.
Louis CK: Live at Beacon Theatre
“Most people don’t give a shit what happens, as long as they get to do their favorite thing. People don’t even wanna back off from their favorite thing. They won’t even do their second favorite thing. Like, have you ever seen somebody in traffic, they’re at an intersection and they want to make a left. But they’re in the all the way right lane, because they messed up. So now here’s the guy, he’s in the right lane and there’s a whole lotta cars, like Sixth Avenue. Like, a lot of cars and he wants to make that left. So what does he do? He just does it anyway. He just goes ahead and he just shoves his car through everybody’s life. And everybody’s honking and outraged and you always see the guy…‘I have to. There’s no other possible thing I could do. What else could I do?’ …Except go up one more block and then go left and take four seconds!! ‘That’s not my favorite way, though! That only meets 99% of my criteria.’ ”
TLDR People are assholes.
I usually watch the show the day of or the day after. Forgive me for being a day behind. I don’t think that falls into the “spoiler appropriate” window.
Danger Guerrero is my hero.
The show is slow-paced, but that makes it great. Also, the first 4 seasons are on Netflix so you can kill a day off/workday when the boss isn’t looking and get caught up on a season. Things actually pick up after the first 2 seasons.
I can’t even imagine how someone could watch season 2 in one sitting without adderall or cocaine
They look like they’re headed to Keeneland in 2012, although Ken’s jacket looks a bit more fall meet than spring.
Damn it- I didn’t see last night’s show but my curiosity got the better of me. I don’t know who that is punching Pete Campbell but I like his style. Better get out of here before I spoil anything else……. I HAVE ONLY MYSELF TO BLAME FOR THIS.
the moral of last night’s episode is: make sure you fix a sink in front of Jessica Pare.
I’m not going to lie. Even I got a boner after seeing Don fix the sink.
I’m not a violent person at all, but I have to admit while I was watching “Mad Men” last night, there was a small part of me that thought: “Oh I wish you could still resolve office conflicts like that.”
If you’ve ever worked with someone that was just a constant, unapologetic ass for no reason – I’m sure there were times when you thought: “Wow I’d just love to clock this guy right now.”
I got to live vicariously through Lane, and I loved it.
I would love that shit. I’d be pulling my hair back and Vaselining my face on a near daily basis. Added bonus humiliation for anyone I punch, since I’m 5 feet tall and a girl.
(In fairness, the punchees aren’t physically in my office so there’d be some traveling involved.)
“Ugh jees spoilers much.” FUCK YOU. The world keeps fucking spinning even if you missed Mad Men last night.
Are you not going to watch the show now that it’s been spoiled? No, you’ll watch it any way because you’re fan…
