I’m just glad we were able to have a reasonable discussion about thEVERYTHING WAS BETTER WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND NOW EVERYTHING IS STUPID ALL THE TIME.

I still enjoy the Simpsons when I watch it. I just don’t seek it out these days.
(Which means I enjoy the last minute that my DVR recorded when it was grabbing Bob’s Burgers)
I agree with the crotchety old man using all caps.
They should bring back a Simpsons all star writing cast for the last season. There are so many unbelievably great episodes from the early years, it would be nice to recapture some of the magic.
Is it okay to admit that I love Lady Gaga? Because I love Lady Gaga.
I MISS KING OF THE HILL.
The REAL, TRUE, UNTOLD STORY on why The Simpsons is no longer “funny” is quite simple. CELEBRITY GUESTS. Why were seasons 2-13 of the show so successful? Because it didn’t make it a point to include or even highlight celebrity guests. Think of all the famous people who have guest starred for the simpsons. Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson. These world famous people didn’t even play themselves! Early Simpsons focused on the development of the characters who were consistenly in the Simpsons universe. Now, writers/producers/world-controlling ad execs feel the need to promote the show by touting famous people. Watch a promo for the show now. Just watch that trailer above, and try not to think of the South Park scene where the announcer goes, “FUCK YOU YOU’LL GO SEE IT!” I get that the Simpsons has been around forever and it’s difficult to come up with fresh concepts after over 20 years, but this is just lazy. No wonder George Meyer wants nothing to do with it anymore.
Daryll Strawberry (and everyone else), Larry King, Ringo Starr, Tony Bennett. Just some celebrities off the top of my head that played themselves in the first few seasons. Celebrity appearances have been a mainstay of the Simpsons since the beginning. For someone with a Simpsons avatar, you sure have a selective memory about the show.
I’m totally aware that celbrities have been an important aspect of the show, but a lot of them were not driving the plot of the story. The softball episode was one of my favorites, but producers knew that people would watch regardless of who guest-starred. It didn’t have to be THE reason people watched, like it is now. AND ITS CHOWDER! YOU SAY CHOWDER OR ILL KILL YOU!
The very best thing on television last year was her Thanksgiving special. Surely someone who can smuggle a two hour Meat Loaf wet dream into prime time can revitalize The Simpsons.
It’s the classic catch-22 situation. Gaga teaches us tolerance yet I can’t fucking tolerate that idiot. Fortunately I gave up on the Simpsons a long time ago otherwise this would stone it dead. Between this and Justin Bieber wrecking what little respect I had for boxing, I hope I never get to travel back in time to meet 20 year old Spleener and tell him what’s to come in the future. He’d be so sad. (Fortunately, adult Spleener has shit like mortgages to deal with so fuck that little shit and his getting-high-and-watching-the-Simpsons-and-chatting-about-boxing-and-playing-NHL-on-the-Playstation attitude)
I think it’s safe to say that people who still regularly watch the Simpsons have developed a form of co-dependency with the show.
I used to worry about that with regards to myself, but I don’t watch it anymore. Guess I turned out okay.
I don’t really watch it anymore. I saw the first ep of the season and it was not very good. I miss when it was actually hand drawn.
The Simpsons’ golden era was the 1990′s, up until 1997-8. The writing clearly took a downgrade when Al Jean and Mike Reiss left the show. The very late-’90s/early ’00s were probably the dark period for the show, and since then it’s been fairly consistent in providing a couple of good episodes per season. The most recent couple of years have been better than most people give them credit for.
Celebrity appearances have been like everything else in the modern period – hit or miss.
I saw a Simpsons episode I hadn’t seen before the other day and it was quite funny. I don’t watch it religiously anymore, but that doesn’t mean it sucks. Also The Simpsons movie rocked.
I think the main problem with the show these past few seasons is they tell stories that don’t go anywhere, like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. “Give me five bees for a quarter,” you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..
I used to be with it. But then they changed what ‘it’ is.
This article is difficult to digest. I want soft-boiled article.
Anyway, I finally resumed watching The Simpsons semi-regularly this season, and I don’t know if it’s gotten better, or if the decade or so that I took off was just enough for me to finally lower my expectations, but I’ve been enjoying it more often than not.
This episode looks like it can’t possibly be good, though. And mind you that I actually like Lady Gaga.
Lady GaGa makes everything better. This episode will be awesome.
They should bring back Matlock. He’d know what to do.
The Simpsons was once one of my favorite shows. It had a heart then. It doesn’t now. I didn’t change, IT did.
Now what you’re with isn’t “it,” and what’s “it” seems weird and scary to you?
Hey, do you guys think the Simpsons has fallen off a bit? Here’s an original post – I think they were funnier when I was younger. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Long ago I stopped thinking of the Simpsons as those beloved characters I grew up with, and now I think of them as soulless ghosts that you can occasionally get a decent laugh out of. Because of that, I think, I don’t hate them as much as everyone else seems to.
Its quite simple, people get older and tired of the same thing, so they move on or in the case of Matt, they hire other people to do their work. Plus after Phil Hartman died Matt didn’t give a shit anymore so it focused on Futurama instead.
