“Community” fans, it’s time to start rooting for Whitney Cummings.
I know, my emotions are confused, too. But NBC has released its fall schedule (which we’ll discuss more later) for the 2012-2013 season, and “Community” has been moved from Thursday nights to Fridays at 8:30 p.m., where it will follow “Whitney.” As much as it pains me to say this: I don’t think it’s a bad idea, either. Now “Community” is away from “The Big Bang Theory” and the rest of the big boys on Thursday, and with its low budget, it could conceivably air quietly on Fridays for seasons to come. Plus, although “Whitney” didn’t get great ratings, it did OK. Maybe some Cummings fans (*shudder*) will stick around for “Community,” which will already likely get the same number of viewers it did on Thursdays — we’re quite loyal — if not higher because “Grimm,” one of the network’s few bright spots, follows at 9 p.m. Maybe, hopefully, possibly, etc.
So, yeah, I’m reaching for positives, but even I can’t find anything good in this:
NBC chief Bob Greenblatt has just confirmed what’s been an open secret in Hollywood: While “Community” has been renewed, lead producer Sony Pictures Television has not yet signed creator Dan Harmon to a new deal to exec produce the new batch of episodes. Harmon only signed a one-year deal when the show was renewed last spring, and insiders tell Vulture there haven’t been any intense talks just yet…So what happens if there is no deal? “Shows lose showrunners all the time and do well,” Greenblatt said. “We have to figure out at makes sense. I don’t have a specific answer for that yet.” (Via)
Dan Harmon’s a dick, but he’s OUR dick. “Community” wouldn’t be the same without him.
The rest of NBC’s fall schedule is after the jump. New shows are in italics.

I think the show could survive moving to Fridays. On the surface, without any insight into the writer’s room, it sounds like losing Harmon would be shitty. That said, fans stayed pretty loyal during this current season, which I think was weak compared to the first two, so maybe that’s enough to keep the show going.
i think Megan Ganz would be the most likely to take over for Harmon if he does indeed not come back
Isn’t Community among the leaders in internet viewing? Maybe they don’t feel like they need to waste a good time slot on it if everyone’s watching on Hulu anyway.
IMO, the best spot for this show would be Thursdays at 10, following “Parks and Rec”. Late enough that it can survive lower ratings, and following a comparable but more popular comedy. Of course, I have no idea what to do with the 10:30 slot, but this is why I’m an internet commenter and not a TV exec.
I feel like i’m over Community.
I guess this works for me – and God knows I am the most important internet commenter so I expect NBC to pander to my needs. As a person of discernible tastes, I find Whitney to not be as loathsome as it has been made out; it is mildly amusing and certainly not harmful like some of the other shite on TV (Two and a Half Men, I am looking squarely at you).
If I had my way, I would cancel the Office or move it to Friday night and put Community in the Thursday slot. Thus preserving a series of shows on a Thursday that I actually laugh at.
In a real ideal world, I would move the Applegate baby thing (too lazy to scroll up and see its name) and then bring back “Perfect Couples” which I fucking loved. Yup, that’s a fact. Boo yah internets.
This’ll be the fourth season, right? I’m pretty much OK with it ending after this season.
friday is death. so long community.
The move to Friday is fine. Pairing it with Whitney, which is polar opposite of Community in terms of quality and target audience, is a huge insult.
But 30 Rock only has 13 episodes this year. They could move Community back to Thursday at 8:00 once 30 Rock is done. And if not, well, at least I get to watch Community and Fringe back-to-back.
It’s just to hit age demographics. Since Chevy Chase and Whitney Cummings are both in their late 60s, they attract the same elderly viewers.
Problem isn’t that moving it to Friday will kill its audience; it’s that it’ll keep it from growing.
I’m okay with another show on Friday, I just wish it weren’t attached to Whitney, which is a hate crime. NBC, stop the hate!
All I know is that they promised that Jeff and Annie would sleep together in the season song intro and it hasn’t happened yet. I think. Man, this season has been a blur.
it could conceivably air quietly on Fridays for seasons to come
lol no
Worked for Fringe?
At this point why doesn’t NBC try making this an On Demand only show?
Why are Tuesdays and Wednesdays the worst nights for TV? Aren’t those the nights most people watch? I seriously don’t get it.
I made the exact same face that Britta did in the banner when I heard the news of it being paired with Whitney.
But did you look THAT adorable?
Okay internet, time to make a promo with an “Odd Couple” theme using “Community” and “Whitney.”
Dan Harmon is a guy who stirs up trouble and constantly battles network execs for the sake of protecting his vision. In other words, he’s what every showrunner should be.
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!
Obvious Community comments aside, all I see in this new schedule is:
THURSDAY
8:00: 30 Rock
8:30: find something to do for an hour
9:30 Parks and Rec.
Whitney belongs on Lifetime. Because, as Jim Gaffigan says, Lifetime is television for idiots.
friday nights are where shows go to die. i’m gonna miss you community….
