I’m not one of the “Game of Thrones” book readers, so obviously I’m not affected by the fact that HBO has written out some characters and invented a couple of others. I do, however, listen to the fabulous Cast of Kings podcast, which often deconstructs some of the changes from book to series, so I am privy to some of the series’ modifications. From what I can gather, some of the changes in the series have actually been for the best, particularly some of the scenes invented to streamline narrative. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are obviously aware of the challenges, and though it took a few episodes to wrap our brains around the introduction of lots of new characters in the beginning of this season, most of those new characters feel familiar enough to us now that it hasn’t been an issue. It clearly didn’t deter from the spectacular “Blackwater” episode.
It thus seems unlikely that the introduction of several more characters in season three — which will cover the first half of A Storm of Swords (which has been divided into two seasons) — will affect our enjoyment. I don’t know what they’re holding back from the novels, but each new character they have introduced has been fantastic. EW has gotten their hands on a list of new characters intro’d in season three, and in a rare instance, this is actually more of a spoiler for book readers because I have no idea who these characters are, while book readers may better understand the shape and direction of season three based upon who is included. (Note that, according to Benioff, this list is not exhaustive, and several others may also be included).
– Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.
– Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.
– Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.
– Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.
– Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.
– Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.
– Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.
– Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.
– Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.
– Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.
– Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.
I should also mention a programming note: The season finale of “Game of Thrones” this Sunday will be extended 10 minutes, presumably to account for applause breaks. Set your DVRs accordingly.
Also, while we’re on the subject, check out this fantastic image — based on Obama’s HOPE posters — that was superimposed on a side of a wall. It was so convincing that George Takei thought it was real and posted it on Facebook.

NOW EVERYONE CAN STOP BITCHING ABOUT THE REEDS.
WHERE THE HELL ARE LITTLE WALDER AND BIG WALDER?! THEY’RE VITAL TO THE STORY!
I like the Reeds, but they were doing okay without them so far. Also, I had predicted that they’d wait until season 3 to introduce them.
*pats self on back*
I’m surprised they’re going to introduce them this late in the game, actually. Don’t see why they’re needed.
Also, I’m assuming Whitebeard and Strong Belwas will be introduced Sunday night.
I think they’re needed to split Bran and Rickon up- through book 5 it seems like it wouldn’t matter but I’m guessing it will be important by book six for……..
SPOILER
CANNIBAL ISLAND
Skagos is the dumbest plot point in the book. ‘Oh yeah let me just bring this child to a goddamn island filled with cannibals. I’m sure they won’t find his smooth baby skin remarkably tasty.’
Well book three is split in 2 seasons right? So there will still be time to cast other characters from the third book in the 4th season. Still need Red Viper, Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, the Kettlebacks, Ramsey Bolton, and Arys Oakheart and Balon Swann would be nice. Also they showed an actor playing Beric Dondarian in the first season for like a second in a scene where Ned dispatches him to hunt down the Mountain. He was even a credited cast member. Sucks for this David Michael Scott if he doesn’t get to play him again.
Hopefully there wont be a crappy re-casting like The Mountain…
NEE!
What was that?
Oh that was Gregor Clegane.
Wtf? What is he saying?
NEE!
I think he wants us to fetch him a shrubbery.
But what happened to Conan?
He’s beating up hobbitses in New Zealand.
Fuuuuuuu…
idk about that. its kinda hard to capture and eat a kid when he has a direwolf.
Olenna Redwyne is the woman Tyrion. She will be so F-ing awesome on the show.
Agreed, she is the female Tyrion.
If they can borrow Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey, I think she’d be perfect.
Maggie Smith would make an amazing Queen of Thorns. But I’m sure she’ll be awesome no matter what.
Maggie Smith was who I was picturing as well. Just wanted to toss my hat in on that.
Also, Ian McShane would make a good Mance Rayder, and for some stupid reason I’ve always pictured the Blackfish as Billy Connolly.
If there’s ever a role that could get Sean Connery out of retirement, let’s hope it could be Mance Rayder. That’d be so cool you guys.
I support Geraldine Chaplin for Olenna Redwyne
@Leapin_Lizards
Sean Connery is 82 years old. Mance Rayder is no spring chicken since he was a Ranger and now KBTW for over a decade, but he’s probably no older than early 50s.
For some reason, I pictured Mance Rayder as Justin Thoreaux.
Robbin Williams dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire is the obvious choice for the Queen of Thorns.
Hopefully these are spoiler-free observations:
1. Looks like the Martells are getting bumped to Season 4. I want me some Red Viper NOW.
2. Stannis’ family gets a huge MEH from me.
3. If you non-book readers love Bronn, you’re going to felate yourselves over Daario Naharis.
Oh and that list needs more Grey Worm, Arstan Whitebeard and Strong Belwas.
I agree about Stannis’ family. I don’t see how they would add much to the show. However, Shireen’s cousin Edric Storm….
@UU: I would hope that the introduction of Shireen is merely a prelude to Edric. That is, in my opinion, a pretty important arc for Stannis and Davos. The exploration of their dynamic and the role of Davos is a great story.
we need some Patchface, this I know I know oh oh oh
Artisan Whitebread ftw
Still waiting for the introductions of Belwas, Whitebeard, and Ramsay Bolton.
I’m thinking they may pop up in the season 2 finale, hence not being “introduced” in season 3?
They wouldn’t necessarily have to announce the inclusion of “Whitebeard” for obvious since they aren’t exactly hiring a new actor. And Ramsay…might he make an appearance this Sunday since we already know he was sent to Winterfell?
You beat me to it UU, my post is half useless no, THANKS!
Ramsay is, as they say, boss.
@whine – pretty sure Ramsay wasn’t casted for Season 2, so next week should be interesting/disappointing.
Belwas and Whitebeard would make sense at the end of this season.
Ramsay, though, is someone that I’m NOT looking forward to. He’s the worst.
I think we’ll see Ramsay/Reek like we saw that chick in the Walking Dead. All menacing and shit.
I don’t know that they can introduce Belwas and Whitebeard yet. She still hasn’t even been to the House of the Fucking Undying.
I’m not sure what’s been drawn out longer – Dany’s story arc this season or the last season of The Walking Dead.
I love Bronn, I hate Daario. It’s called the Dany effect (not true, I love Jorah too).
I know this is just the first round, but I really hope for : Vargo Hoat, Strong Belwas (and Arstan Whitebeard of course, but you know), and fucking Ramsay Bolton!! He’s been mentionned on the show so I’m not worried.
I think we’re going to get the Martells too, at least Oberyn, Mace Tyrell and Olenna Redwyne aren’t really needed before Oberyn is needed too, sooooo fingers crossed!
And really nice to see the Blackfish finally make it!
Daario puts the Boss in Bossinova.
Also, in S3, they need Mace and the Queen of Thorns early to continue the story established in Blackwater (i.e. Loras is now in Kings Landing w/ the might of Highgarden). I guess I can understand excluding the Martells until Season 4, but I’m still going to pout about it.
Blackfish is the best.
Blackfish>>>>>>>>>>>>>Edmure
Winter is Coming.net found video of a guy trying out to be Vargo Hoat so he’s in for Season 3, though the actor didn’t have a lisp. Also, they found a casting notice for what seems like Ramsay Snow.
Keep in mind that the show has barely cast any “name” actors other than Dinklage, Sean Bean and maybe Mark Addy. Speculation as to who actually gets cast for these roles is kind of pointless because it’s probably going to be someone you’ve never heard of.
That said, if you want a clue as to who MIGHT be cast, Jorah, Luwin, Craster and Balon Greyjoy all had roles in the Winston Churchill biopic Into the Storm. So check that IMDB page for hints as to who’s on the producers’ shortlist.
@ Bobby Big Wheel – that’s some good insight. Thanks man.
@Bobby…Renly & Greatjon Umber were in that, too. Holy heck, that’s a lot of GoT actors in one show.
The thing that got me really excited was seeing Brendan Gleeson in the cast, but he’s probably too big a name for the show to land. Shame, he’s pretty much exactly how I picture Tormund.
@Ike Whoa! Definitely not a coincidence. Frank Doelger was a producer for both, maybe he’s the one driving it.
It’ll be nice to see the Bloody Mummers get some TV time. They could be a lot of fun on the screen.
I wonder if they’ll keep the same guy for Beric Dondarrion that we saw for two seconds in season 1.
Yeah, I was wondering that too.
When I read that I was going to adjust my glasses and point out that Dondarrion was technically already in season 1, having been sent out after the Mountain by Ned. Between drags on my inhaler, clearly.
I had pictured him as older in the books, so I only caught that it was even Dondarrion in that scene the second time I watched it.
Leigh. In the books they say he’s comely so i figured he’d be young. The bitches love some of that Lightning Lord.
Fair enough. I also pictured Davos as being black, so clearly my brain likes to just arbitrarily pick attributes and assign them to people while I’m reading.
From what I understand there were contractual reasons the guy playing Beric in season 1 wasn’t even credited with an appearance. It gave the producers the freedom to either recast or keep the same actor depending on availability etc.
I can’t wait to see who they get for Mance and Tormund.
And I’m surprised that they waited so long to introduce the Tullys, but as long as they’re splitting book 3, I guess they’ve got plenty of time.
Excited for Tormund. Just for all the dick jokes we’ll hear next season
I’ll start: I dub thee Turgid Giantwang
I know some people were disappointed that the Blackfish did not make an appearance in Season 1. This should cheer them up, and yes he is a very good character.
I’d love to see Dominic West as Mance but I’d also love to see him as The Red Viper.
Wonder if they’ll work in Patchface at some stage?
I can’t wait until they cast Thoros of Myr, because as I’m reading the book I keep picturing McConaughey from Reign of Fire. Gah.
Hahaha
I always pictured Mance as the guy who played Robert the Bruce in Braveheart.
I know this will never happen, but I always envision Thoros as Kenan Thompson.
All I know is that I want Eric Bana to play Victarion down the road, if he ever makes an appearance. But again, probably way too big of a name.
Ving Rames as Thoros would be, as the kids say, baller.
Drunken Ving Rames using magic? Tell me you wouldn’t love to see that
Yeah, that would be pretty great. Plus, he’s probably more appropriately portly rather than all out fat.
Is there some reason Edmure is just a “brash young member of the Tully family”? Will he not be Cat’s brother? They specify the Blackfish is her uncle, so that stuck out as being odd.
Probably because show Cat can seem a bit matronly at times. This is to emphasize the age difference
Cillian Murphy as Ramsay Bolton or GTFO. They also need somebody badass to play the Red Viper.
Howzabout Tom Selleck as Lady Selyse or GTFO
Also on the wishlist: Artisan Whitebread, Strong Belwas, and lets not forget Grey Worm and The Unsullied
(also the name of my band)
Greyworm and the Unsullied is also the name of my bait and tackle.
As you can tell, I’ve never been laid
Ser Garlan please oh mighty producers. Seeing The Blackfish on that list is most welcome.
It’s a ways off but I’m looking forward to Victarion and Euron. Mainly Victarion cus he’s a killing machine and a pirate.
I’ve always pictured the Red Viper as Inigo Montoya (a young Mandy Patinkin) from the Princess Bride.
We need the Reeds (Jojen and Mara) because they lead to Howland Reed. That is if we ever get to see fucking Howland Reed.
I’m pretty sure we have already seen Beric Dondarrion in Season 1, right before Ned and Jaime fight. Ned sends him out to stop the Mountain from raping/pillaging villagers (the birth of the brotherhood w/out banners). I could be wrong tho
