There is no character that best epitomizes the “The Office’s” fall from grace than Catherine Tate’s Nellie. The show has been bad for awhile, but the introduction of her character took it from really bad to plain goddamn awful. She’s an aimless character with no emotional center who has been terribly written from the very beginning, like a clueless Ricky Gervais character that’s taken a mallet to the cranium. It’s a shame, too, because Catherine Tate herself is a gifted British actress who won a lot of people over during her stint on “Doctor Who.”
So of course Nellie — who walked in and took over as branch manager of Dunder Mifflin only to be pushed out when David Wallace bought out the company in the season finale — will be returning next season as a series regular, according to The AV Club. This, I suppose, is how they’re replacing Mindy Kaling, which is kind of like replacing a bag of M&Ms with a bag of chocolate covered dead baby fingers. I actually feel like the head scramble Tate’s character received at the end of her “Doctor Who” arc has stuck well into her run on “The Office.” Indeed, the next season of “The Office” is going to be unbearable, but I’ll watch every episode. I can’t seem to let it go.

Well, I guess I’ll continue not watching The Office.
I didn’t give up on this show until Nellie. Once I realized she was staying, I deleted this off my season pass faster than Jersey Shore.
I’ve made a conscious decision to just quit watching The Office next season. I’ve been meaning to for a long time, but every time it popped up in my Hulu queue, i found myself watching it (but certainly not enjoying it).
It’s official: Once Parks & Rec is over, so will be Thursday Night Must See TV.
In all honesty, Dustin, what would it take to get you to actually stop watching? I ask this as someone who probably watched 15 episodes of the Simpsons per week for 8 years, but now gives the show the same attention a millionaire tycoon would to the people of Australia spelling out his name in candlelight across the entire continent.
Oh, Office. I hate so much about the things you choose to be.
I’m not sure that my epic love of Ed Helms can pull me through this one.
It’s not so much “according to The AV Club” as it’s according to TVLine.
Credit where credit’s due.
it’s poochie! I hope she gets rasta-ized
Steve Carrell’s last episode felt like an appropriate series finale, so I’ve just gone on pretending that it was. These little reminders that I apparently made the right choice are wonderful.
The Office sucked during Carrell’s final season, they’ve just taken “suck” to a new level.
No…
Definitely agree that the show should have ended when Steve Carrell left.
Also agree that it is like a train wreck and I just can’t look away. I will be with it til the end.
I’m honestly morbidly curious just what feedback beyond “this character is a very good way to torment POWs” they could be getting to justify this. Maybe the Pentagon offered to find part of the show for that reason.
I have to say the one moment where I actually did laugh out loud in the last couple seasons of the show was due to Nellie….
Whenever Robert said “I’m sorry Nellie, I didn’t know Jim and Pam were going to use this party as an opportunity to humiliate a magician” I chuckled.
Hopefully she remembers all of her adventures with The Doctor and her brain catches on fire.
I can’t believe these comments. Carrell was horrible. Everyone acted as if he was a genius at improv but he wasn’t. He just looked uncomfortable and never seemed like a real person. Nellie is a great character and a wonderful foil for the other characters. On top of that she’s actually funny. Just waiting for Rain Wilson to get his over-acting butt off the show and it might actually be good.
obvious troll is obvious.
I’m with MarkInArk. Nellie and Dwight were the only two who made the show watchable this past season. Their dynamic alone could carry this train wreck in their collective backpacks for a couple seasons. The Office’s charm is long gone, but Nellie is NOT to blame. She’s done great, and Catherine Tate is continually funny in the role. She’s much better than Steve Carell was in the last 2 seasons he was on the show.
Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face! Good day to you, madam.
Let’s remember Catherine Tate for her time on Doctor Who…Donna Noble forever!!! Maybe this will lead to an awesome series finale where the Doctor comes and takes Donna away thus bridging the Doctor Whoverse and The Officeverse. Didn’t people ask for that?
Not a troll at all. The Office has always been a terrible show. The UK version was brilliant but Carrell and the others never matched the wit and sensibility of the original. People who salivate over this show are slaves to popular opinion and can’t distinguish real quality. With Tate the show finally has the bite of the original UK series and finally shows potential.
